WOW! That looks like the best of both worlds, painting and quilting combined. You have really perked up my interest as I was into painting fr quite a few years and then it just faded away when I stated to quilt.

I've just got my first packet of inktense colours and intend to use them on a picture of a flower that I took and transformed into a kaleidoscope, I will use a few quilting techniques with it and stick some beads on. Your example gives me inspiriation. Many thanks for the tip about the aloe vera vs the water, as i
I really don't want to find out about the bleeding the hard way. Cheers. |
Ditto to what all have said, and your quilting adds so much to the design, very nice!

[quote=janeknapp]Do any of you use watercolor pencils or Inktense pencils to color fabric for use in your quilting?
I'm in a small quilt group at our local quilt store and the project for the month is a small quilt using fabric paints. We are first to quilt the quilt and then color in. (Quilt and Paint) I decided to use watercolor pencils and ordered them and I hope they come in today! I ordered Derwent Intense Watercolor Ink Pencils. I'm new to watercolor pencils and I never heard of using Aloe Vera gel. Great Idea. One of my biggest concerns was the bleeding since I already quilted the block. I'll have to try it. Your block is really beautiful. |
Thank you. I am very interested in trying this. Also, exploring this to see what my grandchildren, who love to color, could do. Seems like a great way to capture their creativity also. :-D
|
Jane, I enjoyed seeing your block yesterday, it's beautiful. I didn't get all the details so was glad to see your post this morning. I plan to try this but have to get my supplies first. Shirley
|
I'm so glad you posted this. I love your mother's block and, of course, yours is so beautiful. I would love to try this. The colors are so much more intense than I have seen with crayons. Please post any other things you do. You are inspiring me.
|
 must do a tutorial asap PLEASE!!!!!!!!!
|
How inspiring! And handy -- I used a batik I got from a friend and didn't pre-wash it because I assumed she'd already done that. Bad mistake. (You know what they say about "assume"!) I'm afraid it will bleed -- so now I hope I can draw on a flower here and there to hide it!
|
Very nice

Your lily is beautiful. I've not heard of this but it will be perfect for my granddaughter to try. I might try it myself. Thanks for sharing.

I'm still new at using this technique and new at making art quilts. I can learn from others who are more experienced.
I bought the pencils from Michaels, but the selection was limited. I was only able to get 12 of the Inktense pencils and would like a larger box. Dick Blick would be the place for more choice. I really like the Derwent Inktense pencils for vibrant color. The ink is also permanent after using the gel. I am combining both watercolor and Inktense on the same project. I haven't used fabric medium for setting the watercolor. I have a bottle, so I will try it. I have heard that any colored pencil will work, but the ordinary ones I tried weren't as good as the Derwent. There are probably other brands that work, too. I just haven't tried any. You can get the aloe vera gel (clear, no perfume) from Walmart. I did prewash the muslin to remove the sizing and chemicals, so there is no hindrance to the color going into the fibers. |
I saw this at a quilt show last ear and loved it. She used water I have never heard of using aloe vera gel. That is on my list of things to try.
|
I love this. What is the technique called? I would love to learn how to do this. Thanks for sharing.

I haven't heard a standard name used for this technique. It is another way of applying color to a quilt.
How about...the easiest way to applique or colored pencil applique? |
Beautiful!
