The watercolor can be made permanent with fabric medium. Dick Blick and Michaels carry the Derwent watercolor and Inktense pencils (see prior posts). |
I really love this. I can see my next purchase will be some of these pencils. Thanks so very much for explaining what you used and how you did it.
|
Breath taking
|
Thank you so much for describing your process. I use Inktense pencils, too, and didn't know you had to add aloe vera to activate them. Your work is lovely.

I totally echo this! Everyone could bring their own supplies, and some fabric to practice on, and just experiment together. You don't have to wait hours for the fabric medium to dry- I've put a light fabric over it and dried it with an iron if I was in a hurry, but if you don't soak it heavy, the fabric medium will be dry on it's own in 10 minutes. The only thing I will say that is different from what was mentioned before is that I have washed my project immediately after finishing it, and heat setting the fabric medium so the project was fully dry, and the none of the color washed away. With other set methods, it may need 24 hours. |
WOW that is breathtaking. You did a great job. Do you have to heat set it after you are done.
|
Haven't tried this yet. But, your picture is gorgeous! Great job!!
|
Beautiful job. Shading is perfect. Check out water color books for patterns. They also have color guides. Tole Painting books another source.

Here is the photo I used for the lily. I resized it and cropped it. Then I printed it in black and white. I drew black lines on the paper around the major shapes with a pen. I laid high quality muslin fabric (or have used polished sateen purchased at Dharma Trading Co.) over that design and traced lightly with a mechanical pencil. I used the Ultimate Marking Pencil for Quilters. I started coloring with the lightest shades first and added medium and dark for shading and intensity. I drew strokes of color to mimic the lines in the photo. Finally I used the small, short stiff brush to dip into the aloe vera gel and brush onto the colored fabric. I make sure all of the color has been activated by the gel. I know this has happened, because the colors become more intense.

I made a sleeve for the back of the Lily quilt, so it would fit onto a plastic 8 x 10 vertical photo stand which I purchased from Michaels. Michaels also has a horizontal 8 x 10 photo stand.

I have worked with kids alot. One summer my niece who was 4 yrs. and my nephew 11 were staying with me. It was cold and rainey so we were limited on activities. I got out the quilt book and some fabric and we started sewing. my niece worked on 5 in squares and we made a design out of color. My nephew picked a pattern with triangles. I manipulated the pattern into 12 in squares. I made them each a sewing box with thread, needles, pins and fabric. They both did a good job. Another time we used white t-shirts, crayons, brown paper bags and an iron. They used the crayons to make a design then I covered the design with the bag and ironed over the design. I moved the bag until all of the color was either on the shirt or the bag. The shirts can be treated normally.
