Oh that is too cool. I want to pick that up tomorrow and try it. Where can I get those pens and the aloe vera gel? My residents would love to do this. Should we use embroidery hoops to stretch the fabric or do we tape it to the table? pm me with more detailes please

That is amazing! I love it!

I am in love with your "lily quilt". I love the look of the watercolor pencils. I would love to try this myself. I want to make sure I understand exactly how you did it. Using high end muslin you trace your design onto it, then you apply aloe vera gel to the area you plan to color with the pencils. Do you use any particular brand of aloe vera gel? I would appreciate your assistance. Thank you.

Hobby Lobby has the pencils. But it only a 12 pack.

Love your flowers! I took a class with Velda Newman and learned to use the inktense pencils (and bleach and resist and acrylic paints). Never thought I would paint on a quilt, but I loved the effects! She has a few books out on how to do this. Got to see her Zinnias quilt - 8 feet high and 18 feet long! Gorgeous!

It helps to press freezer paper to the back of the muslin when coloring and applying the gel to stabilize the fabric.

Check previous pages to find out more about the pencils and gel.

I color with the pencils and then apply the gel afterwards. Check page 9 to learn about the gel.

These may not be about the use of pencils on fabric, but some of the ideas still apply.

janeknapp 06-22-2011 02:28 AM

Thanks for all of your interest in this technique and the comments you've made about my little quilt. I'm still learning and appreciate all of the information you have given me. There are so many wonderful, interesting, and enjoyable techniques to try in the quilting world. One can never be bored!

Jane, THANK YOU! You have been so kind and patient with explaining and reexplaining what you have learned. You have really peeked everyone's interest here. Bless you. Linda :-D

janeknapp 06-22-2011 12:47 PM

Thanks, Linda.

I've come to the conclusion that cotton sateen is NOT so good for coloring with pencils.

I think the harder finish of top quality muslin may be the best.

kewlquilts 06-22-2011 01:48 PM

what a great idea!!! I love your project!! I'm in my late 40s and still love to find a reason to color. Its so relaxing and cathartic (right word?) Thanks for the tip!

Irena Bluhm said that too- she said she went to Shiva paint sticks on the cotton sateen fabric.

Marciachadsey 06-22-2011 06:46 PM

joann11 06-23-2011 11:21 AM

Sorry This was to go to show my Star Block.Don't know to fix it..

L8quilter 06-23-2011 01:20 PM

Is this candlequilter's pattern? I thought it turned out great. I have the pattern and want to get started but haven't had the time. I was trying to figure out what you painted/colored with the pencils. Glad it was the star and not the colored pencils you were showing.

gonzales_pat 06-23-2011 01:53 PM

Nice

joann11 06-23-2011 04:58 PM

Just-Lee 06-24-2011 09:38 AM

This is the stuff I like!! I think art quilts are so unique and creative...everything I am not! lol I would love to learn/ know more, if you don't mind sharing? I have no clue about anything to do with fabric dying, painting, etc.
