Okay I'm finally up and at it after sleeping in way to late. I'll be working on a diamonds quilt. 8 inch diamonds finished. I've never sewn together diamonds, always used the strip method and the diamonds were much smaller. This time they will be cut from fat quarters so no strip sets. I'll post the progress. First thing is to drag out the design board that I keep hidden in the rec. room. Maybe one more cup of coffee.....see you in an hour or so with my progress.

Virtual Quilting Day 7-15-12

Here is what I'm doing instead of what I am supposed to be doing! The border of the quilt is my goal today. The purpose of the quilt is to use up scraps and it is working. Only one fabric repeated so far.

I put a quick tutorial in my album so any one can go there to see how incredible easy this is to do. The album is in 2 parts cause I couldn't get it to load all of them in one album!? Also the pics loaded in reverse order so work backwards! Like I usually do anyway.:D

This is much more impressive than I thought it would be so to use up more of my tons of scraps I am going to start making some more in tone on tones, I think this pattern would look cool in all scraps of all one color. All reds, all blues, all yellows, all greens, etc.

enjoy! Please show off your VQD accomplishments.

We should have a special place for this thread.
peace to all

The pattern was free from McCalls Quilting in 2008. It came as a free gift after getting the magazine.

I will be going to chuch in a few minutes, I am the organist for today. Then home for a lite lunch and then back up to
the sewing room to do some more work on the segments for #3 French Braid. I hope to get that one finished and a
start on the #4 one. I worked yesterday on this so I am really hoping to get a lot done with two days of working in sewing room. Hope everyone has a wonderful day. it is hot, hot, here, so I will be running a fan along with air as my sewing room is on the second floor of my house, and it is never as cool as downstairs.

StephTn 07-15-2012 05:59 AM

I also love the look of your quilt.Especially how you used the pear in the block.Going to try and cut out my borders for my jellyroll quilt. Hoping my hubby will sleep alittle longer before I have to get him his lunch and then get him off to work. Then maybe I can finish the top before anymore interuptions...lol

taimi 07-15-2012 06:00 AM

Getting my coffee on right now then hoping to finish piecing a lap quilt for my grandmother, shouldn't be too difficult, it is just a fence rail but the flu is trying to knock me back down so I may end up back in bed instead of in the sewing room

marne 07-15-2012 06:00 AM

I hope to join everyone this afternoon. We have to make a trip to Menards in a town about 45 minutes away...so we'll probably do lunch, too. Oh, and I might make my hubby stop at Joann's for

Our theme for the upcoming school year is "Patriotic." The grade level teachers are supposed to come up with matching t-shirts and tend to coordinate classroom items as well. Since I teach music, I'm with the art, PE, and library teachers. We all get a long great and I am in charge of the t-shirts (applique of a paw print with red and white striped fabric for the pad of the paw and blue star fabric for the top parts) and I also told them I would do wall hangings for our doors. So far I have one shirt and one wall hanging completely finished.

Today I want to finish hand sewing the binding to the back of the second wall hanging and I need to sew the border around the 3rd wall hanging, sandwich, and get started hand quilting it.

Sorry for the huge picture!

Patti25314 07-15-2012 06:08 AM

You gals/guys are so amazing! I'm getting started on tumblers again.

Love your helpers! What breed is cooper?, he kinda looks like mine (my avatar), but a bit smaller I think. He is 5 months old in the pic, was taken on the 4th day we had him, 7/12/09, had knee surgery, so remember the date!

Julie R 07-15-2012 06:29 AM

Just joining in the fun now (hubby and I went out for pancakes). I'm working on binding my redwork wallhanging today.

carolaug 07-15-2012 07:03 AM

Well after drying and ironing the white muslim that I have I think its too thin...you can see through it. I have used it for backing which worked well but I do not think it would be a good idea for this top. I just may need to finish another project. I need to find a pattern that I have somewhere....to finish my last block that I started a year ago.

Cooper is a Shepherd, we think he is a Malinois Shepherd which is a Belgium shepherd. He is almost 5 yo, we believe. We rescued him last year after loosing our other German Shepherd, Zeuss, unexpectedly to an aggressive cancer. Cooper was heartworm positive but we choose to go ahead and adopt him and proceeded with the treatment. He has been HW negative since December of 2011!

oldcatlady 07-15-2012 07:29 AM

Hello all, finished reading the sunday papers on the patio with coffee enjoying the cloudy day and a nice breeze. It is muggy inside but am going to bit the bullet and work on putting some swap blocks together into tops. I've let them pile up. I want to make several lap quilts and cat quilts out of them. My cats love to lay on my blocks so figured I'll just make them little quilts to lay on :)

Pat625 07-15-2012 08:11 AM

Love the patriotic wall hanging!! Beeen moving slow and spending way too much time checking on everyone elses progress!! LOL..Just finished cutting for my Grandaughters quilt..Now to begin piecing it..Hope to have it sandwiched tonight so I can start the hand quilting....Shouldn't take long to piece, since the blocks are very large due to big patterned fabric she chose. Now the quilting is another story!!

DebraK, I love your colors and fabrics on both of these quilts! Hope you get them done today, or one at least...

I started taking online classes 9 weeks ago, and sewing went right out the window... I had hoped to be able to join you all today, but am behind in housework and other chores and schoolwork starts again tomorrow! Drat. I may be able to get a baby quilt top sandwiched for hand quilting today... that's something. Will be checking in with all of your progress periodically through the day.

AshleyR 07-15-2012 08:20 AM

Thank you! I started the throw years and years ago, before I even had a rotary cutter. It's made out of shirts. I wanted to back it with denim, but that never happened!
It will be nice to have a quilt that *I* made on the bed instead of the $3 thrift store one we have on there now. I had to buy it because the quilt I made for the bed was too small!

I'm here today! I'm trying to empty my UFO bin, so I'll be basting more than sewing today. I should have all of my UFOs quilted by the end of the month. I might sew a bag or two today when the basting gets to be too much.

Oh my, everyone is busy and accomplishing so much! I have made a small dent with my fabrics, realized I needed to do laundry (I do not have a washer/dryer so I have to use my MIL...luckily she is only a couple apartments away) then hang on the line. Now spending some time on the board...then back to the fabric. Thought I would share a photo of my Dodger, who is lingering close by waiting for me to play ball and Chicca who is sleeping on a chair watching my progress (thankfully, she is not on top of the ironing board or the cutting board trying to help like usual.)

I had a knee replacement 7 weeks ago. Do your physical therapy and enjoy being waited on and taken care of. It will end too soon I'm afraid.

I love the sashings that you put on your butterflies carolaug. They just make those butterflies sing!!!if butterflies sing.

nellybelle 07-15-2012 09:15 AM

Home from church, had a veggie salad, and crystal lite peach tea. And of course, I had to read all the responses that have been added since I last looked.
I am ready to head upstairs to the sewing room. I am hopefully to get as much done as I did yesterday. See you later.

Well, I couldn't sleep last night so in the wee hours of this morning, I put the border on my "Back to School" door hanging. I thought every teacher should have one on her front door. When I saw the Sally, Dick and Jane fabric, I knew exactly what I would use it for. It just reminds me of school and when we actually learned how to read with names we could pronounce and sight words we had to learn. I guess my door hanging is ready to quilt.

Also, finished big sister's college t-shirt, so it is ready for move in day in August. Still need to work on Grandma's, Mom's and Dad's. We plan on wearing them on move in day.

I am also working today on cutting out 7" batik squares for my rainbow quilt. I love batiks but they can be a little wompy and out of shape at times. Going to sash these block with white, white so they look like they are floating. Can't wait to see the results.

Then I need to roll more fabric on comic book boards. I swear the fabric multiplies when I shut off the lights.

oksewglad 07-15-2012 09:24 AM

Love the way you updated the DJ&S motifs with borders and graphic fabric. I have some too and wasn't sure how to make it look more nontraditional. Thanks.

carolaug 07-15-2012 09:27 AM

Well...was interupted...hubby was on a cleaning kick...must admit glad we throughly cleaned...so much cat hair...its weird we did not notice it until we started to clean. I have one more closet to check for that pattern. Really hope I can find it. I also made some home made pie crust. Now in the frig for 4 hours. I bought some pie crust yesterday..wow...I do not remember them costing so much. The Blueberry peach pie is just about gone...the hubby eat most of it. It was so yummy!

carolaug 07-15-2012 09:30 AM

I just started cleaning out one of my closets..and found my glasses that I have been missing for 6 months....Yippee!!! I can see again...

Sorry, I can't stop giggling!

jaspersu 07-15-2012 09:39 AM

I have been working on a 5 point star block. I am trying to explode/expand the points away from the central shape. Started at about 6 am. It is past noon now,
and I have this: http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...h_IMG_2243.jpg

I have to go see my mom, so I'll return to the star another day.

AshleyR 07-15-2012 10:20 AM

Ok, it's finally time to sit and quilt!!

Chicca 07-15-2012 10:24 AM

Just taking a quick break. Hubby cleared some more of the bookshelfs, now I have enough room for all the extra fabric. Still looks sort of bare right now, but by the time I finish with this tote and the one other tote, it will be full. Although I really have accomplished quite a bit, you can not tell by the tote. Just a smidgeon appears to be gone from it.

Love what everyone is posting and such wonderful projects! Off I go to do some more.

SewExtremeSeams 07-15-2012 10:35 AM

OK, my hopeful goals to reach for today are pp blocks for a swap and at least one little quilt for AAQI project. Time to shower and hit the machines!

Man what a day, between the phone and my A.D.D. I can't seem to get much done. But finally I've got some progress. I always like to make paper templates before I start cutting on something new and a good thing I did because my first plan was all wrong. I had to make a second set of paper templates that are working out great! the fabric so far is hard on they eyes. I think once I get the solids mixed in things will be ok. Now maybe I can go get that design wall and put my ironing board away.

oldcatlady 07-15-2012 10:52 AM

Taking a little break....who am I kidding, I've been putzing (sp) around not getting much done. I worked like a dog last wed/thur/fri/sat/sun making 31 blocks to finish the Boom 7 blocks and I don't have much enthusiasum to do much this weekend.

I sewed together 9 blocks from the flower garden swap last year to make a nice throw for the car. Some of the blocks were smaller than others so instead of trying to add borders to build up, I whacked off to make 12" blocks. I'll sandwhich and quilt another day. I want to get another throw put together today.

Some of you are putting me to shame :), getting so much done! I feel like a slug today. It rained alittle but still need a lot more. muggy! muggy!
