Updating! I have 60 of my biscuit blocks done. My goal was 50! I'm going to keep on to see if I can finish the last 40 before it is time to go get the dogs' pictures taken! I had to stop for a bit as had to shear the sheep (meaning had to use the furminator on our 2 large furry dogs) and had to bathe our Pom. Everybody is looking good and ready to get their picture taken about 6 pm tonite!

nellybelle 07-15-2012 11:44 AM

Well, I have the 3rd braid done. Came downstairs to get refill of CL. Got sidetracked on puter, hadn't done the jigsaw puzzle yet, so I did that. Headed upstairs to start on #4 braid.

IrishNY 07-15-2012 12:01 PM

Making progress slowly. I have too many other things that I need to get done today and I keep wandering away from my sewing. But I do have all of the HSTs squared up so they can be sewn into blocks. Thought I would never get that done - there are 280 of them. I have 21 blocks sewn together and 4 rows sewn (of 7) so I am more than halfway. I won't be happy unless I finish the top and I am not sure that's going to happen today. lol

I am impressed at how much some of you are getting done.

Back to the sewing machine...

*UPDATE* Making some progress now! Things always look different in the pictures....hummm....well we might have to add and take away and move a few things around before sewing these rows together. Now to get the applique ready....yep APPLIQUE! I'm a new applique lover!

cwessel47 07-15-2012 12:18 PM

I am here. I had company from out of state last night/ this morning so it's taken me awhile to decide if I had the energy today. And I do..
I saw a post on the board last week about how swoon blocks were all the rage. Did my research, drew out the pattern, picked the fabrics and cut them out. I am now sewing them together and you WILL see the block completed tonight. When I participated in May I wanted to machine piece the curves of my Wedding Ring mini. Trust me - it didn't work. So I have been hand piecing and should be able to get the third row on this evening - after the swoon block.
Then I will post pictures.
I hope you all are making the best of a wonderful quilting day!

Too cute! Love the fabric. Can't wait to see the applique. I love applique.

UPDATE: Got my 7" blocks cut and my fabric wrapped. Now I have company, so had to stop for a while.

auntpiggylpn 07-15-2012 12:50 PM

Update: Okay, I got 90 of my Biscuit blocks done. But, alas, I must go for now :( Gotta get the dogs to the park for their pictures and then I have to study for my Sociology midterm which is tomorrow! I will sneak a peek later and see how everyone is doing! Thanks, it's been lots of fun today!!!!

Not sure if I like this--connecting 4P didn't define crumb blocks like I thought they would. Think I will rip-it, rip-it and just put a solid block instead of the 4P's. Spent too much time making the crumb blocks to have something I don't like. Started corner triangles on the other string blocks as you can see in the urhcorner.

It just reminds me of school and when we actually learned how to read with names we could pronounce and sight words we had to learn. I guess my door hanging is ready to quilt.

Also, finished big sister's college t-shirt, so it is ready for move in day in August. Still need to work on Grandma's, Mom's and Dad's. We plan on wearing them on move in day.

I am also working today on cutting out 7" batik squares for my rainbow quilt. I love batiks but they can be a little wompy and out of shape at times. Going to sash these block with white, white so they look like they are floating. Can't wait to see the results.

Then I need to roll more fabric on comic book boards. I swear the fabric multiplies when I shut off the lights.

I LOVE the Sally Dick and jane quilt!~!Where did you find that fabric?!

I am almost done putting the top together for my DD quilt..would love to have it at least sandwiched before I quit for the day. I like to sit in the evenings and hand quilt.

Julie R 07-15-2012 01:24 PM

Finished the binding on my redwork wallhanging. Now I'm sewing borders onto my flannel puppy dog quilt.

Well, I posted very early this morning and then went to church and to Knoxville to run some errands and lunch while we were out. Came home and went downstairs to sew. Hubby finally wanted to eat, so just quit and came up to post these pictures to show what "Little" work I did today. I hope to go back downstairs after he eats (I won't be eating - one big meal per day is all I can handle) and finish at least with the borders on the Asian Scrappy quilt. Here's some progress postings. The smaller pieces are needing handwork - one just binding and the other some hand quilting to finish up.

nellybelle 07-15-2012 02:16 PM

Well it is 5pm in my corner of the world and I calling done for today. Need to do a couple loads of laundry. This hot weather sure makes a lot of laundry. I am working on #4 braid and am almost half done with that. I will need to cut before I can do the separator part of the quilt. Thanks for letting me join your quilting bee.

Lovely quilting on a lovely quilt.

Pat625 07-15-2012 02:21 PM

Time to piece the fabric for my backing. Maybe if I am real nice, my 2 teen daughters will crawl around on the floor and pin it for me, so I can begin hand quilting! Might cost me ice cream LOL

Here is a picture of my scrappy WIP. (It was taken at an angle to keep my shadow off it- it is not QUITE as wonky as it looks here!)

As I posted on the other thread, I did everything wrong with this one- notably messing up the measurements when I changed the size of it, but also getting my seam allowances wrong, plus not being able to keep the strips straight, no matter now much I starched (Wish I had foundation pieced, especially the piano keys). So I have cut back and cut back to square it up a bit and the thing will disappear altogether if I don't finish it soon!

For our virtual quilting retreat today I worked to get all the strips the same length and straight, and to sew them together. (I may cut it back a bit when I add the outer border- you can see that I ended up with some unfortunate piecing there but THAT IS OK because it is no longer in strips all over my sewing room, with bits of the many fabrics lying around "just in case"!)

But I have decided that it needs another strip in the space I have left- having two sets of points coming together all wonkily is more than even I can bear. What do you think would work in that space- something easy to make and forgiving for a bad measurer?!

When that is done I think it will be about 27 inches square and I MAY use it as a medallion and make a small quilt/throw out of it. If I can bear to work on it any more lol. It has 278 pieces in it already.

Edited to say- as I look at this photo I can see that I was right in thinking I have no sense of value- it is nearly all the same value and then there are a few dark brown/pink combos that just jump out. If there had been more of them it might have made a pattern lol. Maybe I need a border in those browns/pinks to wake it up a bit? Views?

Learning by doing.... that's me- please help!!

Vanogay! I love your handwork and have a Sashiko sampler drawn and ready to try. I've hand quilted forever and think I just may be able to do it. One question.. Do you use a Sashiko thimble? There are always new products to try but I try to avoid gimmicks. I suppose I should just start doing it and see if it works with my normal thimble. Your Oriental fabrics are just gorgeous and you have showcased them so nicely!

.........And stop......I've gotten 3 rows sewn together and no applique....boohoo...Now I've gotta get onto my customer quilt and putting on the binding. 80 x80 machine to the front and hand to the back. That will take a few hours...sooooo...you all will see later in the month what I've done with my Christmas quilt.

noveltyjunkie 07-15-2012 02:49 PM

That Christmas quilt is looking so festive. I just know it will be a stunner when it is done. What are you going to applique on it?

And, for those who, like me, did not know, the pre-virtual quilt thread has also been going today and there are more lovely projects to view over there (including another cute Christmas quilt!) http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...t194366-5.html

Seems a lot of people missed the link telling them to come over here... Next time (there will be a next time, right?!! Pleeeeeeeeeeeeease?!!!) maybe we can start the real thread a little earlier? I think that would work well, not just for people in different time zones like me. (In fact, I will be in a different time zone for the next one- moving again!)

mary705 07-15-2012 03:07 PM

got the 4 patches sewn, going to start pressing, but still need another 120 4 patches, so I guess I will be pairing up more 2" squares. I may do some hand sewing on my cousins cat quilt also or instead.

Maybe we could just stay with the initial post instead of starting a new one on the actual VQD? That way we could read everything everyone has said from the beginning instead of switching between the two threads. You can subscribe to the original thread, have emails sent to you when a post is added, click on that link, and you will be taken to your next unread post...no scrolling through posts you've already read.

Managed to get my blocks made & laid out for my Warm Wishes Baby quilt, but had to give my poor neglected flower garden a clean up as I've been away for 6 weeks and today was nice & cool. Then just when I was going to start stitching DD & her little pug arrived..... But here is what I have accomplished today. and a close up of the fabric, it's a Robert Kaufman called "Over the Rainbow"

I put a quick tutorial in my album so any one can go there to see how incredible easy this is to do. The album is in 2 parts cause I couldn't get it to load all of them in one album!? Also the pics loaded in reverse order so work backwards! Like I usually do anyway.:D

This is much more impressive than I thought it would be so to use up more of my tons of scraps I am going to start making some more in tone on tones, I think this pattern would look cool in all scraps of all one color. All reds, all blues, all yellows, all greens, etc.

enjoy! Please show off your VQD accomplishments.

We should have a special place for this thread.
peace to all

The pattern was free from McCalls Quilting in 2008. It came as a free gift after getting the magazine.

Well the day is over for me. Time to ready myself for work on Monday. Piecing the border went well. Two sides are finished. It has been fun seeing everyones work and progress. Here's a pic of my progress.
Thanks everyone for sharing,

MY wonderful daughters pinned the quilt for me, so I am on to the hand quilting!! I am going to outline the parts of the flowers and echo the sashings etc..It's amazing to me that a 9 year old told me how she wanted this made as well as picked out all the fabrics when I took her shopping the other day. i am attaching a picture, but unfortunately I took it on the phone and it doesn' show how colorful it actually is.

Hi everyone! Great job on all of your projects. I got my dh's gifts all bound and he decided we should clean carpets today. Why? I have no idea. He even insisted on doing my studio. So these are all I got done today plus a clean house. LOL!

Sheila_H 07-15-2012 04:22 PM

I'm sorry I missed today too - I posted on another thread about not having any motivation to get started sewing again, and someone mentioned that today was virtual day! I hope there will be more virtual days (in my case I'd need at least once a month of them). Great work by all of those that posted pictures of their work!

Well, I was one of those who posted to the other thread. But have been quilting all day and it was so fun. Thank you!!! I finished the "Santa's Galore" - a UFO that has been in the works for 2 years. First time I did a braided border. Love the look. Now it's ready to go to my SIL when we travel to MI in a few weeks.

Also worked on another UFO - had to do some "design changes" since this is old also. But I decided since I was going to be donating it, I should just GET IT DONE. Just the binding left to put on.

All these pictures are wonderful. Lots of new ideas for quilts to come.

I guess I've gotten far enough along now to post. Had a late start today. The swoon block is pieced. I recently traded FQ's for scraps here ion the board and got this awesome piece of black with gold flowers. Had to use it quick! And the DWR is making progress. All of the arcs are pieced, but the fussy hand stitching is taking a while. The third row should be on by bedtime and then only one more row to go. It will be 19" square when complete.

It is almost 9:00 p.m.; but I have finally met my goal for today. I did all of the appliqué and embroidery on my snowman block of the month for July. I didn't realize it would take me so long; but the block looks great. It was fun working with all of you. Thanks!

Pat625 07-15-2012 04:53 PM

Such beautiful work from everyone..I am SO looking forward to next month's meeting!! Of course I am open to participate more often since I am out of work on disability..I am working on making each of my grandbabies a quilt, and want to make some Christmas gifts too. I have made quite a few Bow Tucks purses, and am open for more ideas for gifts (HINT)..I will be spending the rest of the evening hand quilting.

I'm doing QAYG so I brought it with me and tried it on the bed. I realize I need one more row on each side- 12 more blocks. So I started earlier this wk- I have 5 done so far. My goal is to get the other 7 done today. Then I'll just be sandwiching each row & attaching. But at least all blocks will be done! Yay me!! Happy sewing day everyone! I'll post pics later.

Well, I didn't get to make all 7 of my log cabin blocks but I did get 5 made. They are 1 1/2" logs. I only have 2 more to finish them. I'll do them tomorrow then I can start sandwiching. This was a good day for me even tho I had to work in sewing around "life".

AshleyR 07-15-2012 05:08 PM

I got a lot of quilting done!! I finished the throw (posted above) and all the blocks on the dragon fly quilt. I couldn't believe it was 9:00 when I finally stopped!! I wish I could do this every week!

that is such a pretty black and gold block. I've made a DWR quilt, it is a lot of work. I can check that off my list of quilts to do cause I don't think I'll do it again! Yours is so cheerful. Great job. Loved seeing everyone's pics. Hopefully I'll be more motivated at the next one :)

Great work ya'll!! I was hoping to join you but had my 2nd round of this new chemo this week. Been feeling crappy since. I did sit here and cut the rest of the backing squares for my parents 60th Anniversary Quilt and cutting strips for my next Relay for Life quilt. Next year it's going to be in different pinks. The last 2 have been multi colors for different cancers.
