You guys thought I was just joking about haunting y'all today, riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight? Nope! I'm here! And I've already been doing some sewing stuff! I finished getting my package ready for the 10.5" batik square swap (yes, I'm running late on that). Then I got my hand sewing ready to go. I planned to sew binding on (the first change from making my DH's Jelly Roll Race quilt... later for that, I guess). I had some little (8" maybe) scrappy Dresden Plates (the very last thing my Mother & I worked on so I've "been saving them") that I'm appliquing to some funky background fabric (that will either be good or just straight up weird -- I'm not sure why I didn't just sew them to muslin like I usually do). Then after I got my sewing all lined up (I have to have my special thread catcher cup, my special frog pin cushion, my nippers, my can of Dr. Pepper... I'm super anal about my hand sewing), I scurried in to watch the puck drop on my hockey game & wouldn't you know it?!? We're bracing for bad weather up here & the channel is off. And on. And off. Thank you, Direct TV! No, I think the actual station is having trouble. So anyhoo... pretty soon I'm going to have my DH go get my yummy Chinese meal (spring rolls? Fried rice? Egg Foo Yung? All of the above?). THIS IS FUN! Now just to steer clear of the tornadoes (I'm originaly from KS & have nearly met my maker via tornadoes a couple of times so when they say run, I high tail it for the basement!!!). Is everybody else having fun, fun, fun?

I want it to be QS bedspread size, with the star being on the main part of the bed, of course. Happy sewing today! I am so thrilled to be a part of this. My husband is gone for the whole day and my parents (live on the street behind me) are gone for the weekend, so no interruptions! I won't count the time I get on here as an interruption. Lol!

My idea for your Log Cabin Star? Send it to me when you're done... whatever size it is! LOL! It's fabulous!

Hi everyone, thought I'd join the virtual fun. Mild but gloomy day in central NYS. I sandwiched a table runner and am now hand quilting. Have another two to go. Two of the three runners are a belated 25th anniversary gift for a cousin and her hubby. Need to finish before next Sunday. Shouldn't be an issue if carpal tunnel doesn't kick in big time again.

well I'm making great progress. Another couple of hours and I'll have this one done. The sewing helpers however aren't having as much fun....

cannyquilter 04-15-2012 08:56 AM

Hi, back again, it is 5.50pm here and I have just finished an early dinner as my husband is wanting to watch an "important" football match (soccer) which starts at 6. I have completed another 3 blocks fully and have 6 more that need sashing. I am feeling tired but hope to have a break and then get back to. If I can sash the 6 blocks then I just need to join them up (already have the others joined) and the top will be finished. Not sure if the post saying what I am doing actually got throught but I am making 2 identical quilts each with 3x6 14.5" blocks. I am so pleased with how much I have achieved. I am going to take a photograph of progress so far and see if I can post it. FORGOT TO SAY I am loving everything you are all doing, such a great variety. Happy sewing Eileen

Oh no, they look bored!! But your quilt looks great, do you think you'll get the whole top done today? I forget what you said your goal was for today. That's a lot of small pieces!

Just a quick update on my progress .... I have gotten the binding sewn down to my first quilt. Originally I was going to machine sew it to the back, but since this is for a charity, I think I will go ahead and take the time to hand tack it to the back, so I may be doing just that for the rest of the day!! I probably will take a break in the afternoon though and sew a little bit of something else to break up the monotony.

I will have pics of this quilt hopefully by the end of the day!

How is everyone else doing?

Cheers!
Rachel

Sandra in Minnesota 04-15-2012 09:32 AM

I am with you gals. So far all I have done is get my backing cut, and laid on the ironing board and am going to iron it. Next is piecing the batting and putting it together. This is a charity quilt. Happy sewing gals and guys!

echoemb 04-15-2012 09:46 AM

No I won't get the whole top done as I'm short about 3500 squares. BUT the next 2.5" swap closes and I'll have 2000 squares coming in the mail in the next couple of weeks. One more swap and I'll have enough squares for the QS that I'm shooting for. On to the coins, that won't take too long, lunch, alittle nap and then back at it this afternoon. It is 11:45 MTN time.

A late joiner!! I have been "playing" for a couple hours now, but finally settled on a single project for today. I've been working on Bonnie Hunter's Bricks and Stepping Stones (with the black/white 4-patches). It's supposed to be a wedding gift for my next-door neighbor's daughter. Laying it out, trying to figure out how many more blocks I need. They are not square so it's hard to judge. For a break I have binding on another scrappy to hand sew down. It is 1 pm here in Missouri and we missed the tornadoes (at least so far...) Linda

Hi Rachel, I would love to join this group. Taxes have been mailed, attended Church, baked biscuits for breakfast... so Nothing holding me back. I will begin a baby quilt for a boy due in June... still in the designing part.. but will start with a large boat block and seet where it takes me. The new mom has a A B C theme going for his room. Will check in later...and thank I needed an excuse to get this project started.

Pat625 04-15-2012 10:41 AM

Still plugging away at the hand quilting..on my 7th of 72 blocks..Keeping it simple tho, and outlining. The nap idea someone had sounds good, but for me it would mean being up all night..Even tho I don't go to work any more because of disability, I like to keep as normal a schedule as I can...Will probably try to get another 5-6 blocks quilted, and then work on organizing my scraps for a break.

carolaug 04-15-2012 10:44 AM

This is sooo cool!!! I just saw this...I bought my machine in to get a good cleaning. hmmm...not to late to cut some fabric.

nycquilter 04-15-2012 10:45 AM

boy, was today a goof or what? I thought I'd sew all day and garden some. But I'm totally pooped though did a bunch of yard work. Yesterday, I finished the top of the quilt I wanted to work on today. I wish I had a camera handy but I don't...Now, I need to dye more fabric cause I'm about 200 inches short of binding. I usually don't under=dye but I didn't figure on scalloping the edges so now I need more. And, the other planned to work on project just isn't calling me today. So, I'll do handwork later in the evening.

I'm late joining because I just got home. I had not planned to do any quilting today; but all of you have inspired me. I realized that I had fat quarters to make a "Yellow Brick Road" quilt in beautiful pinks and greens. I am cutting it out and, hopefully, can start joining pieces before the day is over. Thanks so much for the inspiration!

irishrose 04-15-2012 11:28 AM

I started a while ago so I'm on my first break. My goal for today - to get the mitered piano keys borders on a Jewel Box quilt. The try sandwiching it using the Sharon Schamber method with boards. - two firsts so wish me luck.

skowron5 04-15-2012 11:32 AM

We went to a local pancake breakfast and I haven't felt good since then. I did one block and I think I ripped every seam on it. Not sure today is my day to quilt. Going to rest and try a little later.

athenagwis 04-15-2012 11:42 AM

I am still plugging along with my binding, I do not think I can handle doing the whole thing right now, so I think I'll finish this one last thread and go work on something else for a bit. We'll see. I have to have it done by next weekend, which i should be able to do pretty easily.

Can't wait to see pics from everyone on what they got done today!!

Cheers!

WOW that block is beautiful...!!

LTeachergeorge 04-15-2012 12:11 PM

Just took a break (to press seams!), and check on everyone's progress. I need six more blocks and I think it will be large enough. I mis-sewed a bunch of blocks, but figured out a way to use them by adding singles on each side of the two -- proud of myself on that one. Thought I was being careful after that, but mis-sewed 3 more. It's starting to look good (on my living room floor).

LTeachergeorge 04-15-2012 12:19 PM

Did my last post get "lost"??? If so, I messed up on a bunch of blocks, but figured out how to use them as is. I've got the blocks lying on my living room floor and they are starting to look pretty good, if I do say so myself. I need to make 6 more blocks, then start sewing them together.

Here's my progress for the day. I'm really happy with how it is going together. Before I sew them together I will adjust them so there aren't matching strips too close together. But, for now the layout is to let me see the pattern. I hope you day went well.....

Well, I started without you. I have finished two block for the Boomerang 7 block swap, a bow tuck bag (for me, I always give them away, but this one is mine.) Taken a nap and now back up there for more blocks.

Can't wait to see some pics, especially on how you'll use those mess up blocks. I really hate when that happens to me, makes me so frustrated!! At least you are making lemonade. :)

My sewing helper has his nose completely out-of-joint! He was mad when I ironed my batiks this AM -- kept bringing me his favorite nearly-dead tug toy to try to tempt me away... LOL! Then he stomped (yes, Leo stomps) out onto the screened in porch, thinking that perhaps absence might may my heart grow fonder. No such luck, puppy dog. Now that I'm resting my owwie knee & doing my hand sewing, he's out in the living room with his dad, alternately watching squirrels out the front window, napping & playing toys with him. Oh, our fur babies are so neglected, aren't they... LOL!

LTeachergeorge 04-15-2012 01:31 PM

It's finished, doesn't stand up to too close an inspection but this is for our holiday van and I am so pleased the top is done. Still got another one to go but at least some of the blocks have been started. Thanks so much Rachel for organising this, I know I would have given up ages ago without my "virtual" quilting bee it has been such fun and oh my goodness some truly beautiful quilts have been worked on I can only dream. I have taken pictures but it has taken me ages just to load them onto the computer so I guess my chances of getting them to post are slim (yes I am technically challenged)lol. It is 10pm here so I have been quilting for 12 hours but with lots of breaks and rests. Have tried to upload picture but it is too many mb and I have no idea how to reduce size so sorry. Will say good night now, thanks for being such wonderful company and enjoy the rest of your day. Eileen

Oh, Sandra! How is your weather? Even tho the sun is shining like nobody's business here in the wild of western WI, our NOAA radio just went off a while ago (nearly scared the curl right outta my hair!) & said that we're in a tornado watch until 11 tonight. I've been seeing all the damage in KS (where I'm from originally) & OK (where we lived for 3 years) & now they say it's headed our way. STAY SAFE! If the sirens go off, take your sewing into the root cellar with you! LOL!
