I am going to sew along with all of you this evening. I am piecing a plus quilt top. The fabrics all have a sewing theme. The quilt will be for my grandmother's birthday this Winter. I am a new quilter so I tried to go with an easy pattern. ~Jen

Huh - can't believe it took me an hour and a half to unsew and change around some squares. Guess I'm kinda rusty! OK - now onto selecting setting triangles.

Neesie 09-23-2012 01:08 PM

Just finished up a UFO, I started over 3 years ago (before we moved). That particular quilt has been like a thorn stuck in my foot, as it seems everything that could go wrong, did. I'm not exactly happy with it but am happy it's finished. :p It's now in the washer and I'm taking a break. In a short while, I'll go back and cut out pieces for something new!

That is a fabulous combination of reds! Nice job. :)

happyquiltmom 09-23-2012 01:35 PM

Well, I haven't accomplished a thing. Just got home and need a nap!

himnherr 09-23-2012 01:41 PM

I'm at a friends house for the wkend. I brought my 2 machines, a foldup table, iron, sm ironing board and a boatload of upholstery samples. The daughter has made 2 bags out of them today (she's so proud, as this is the first stitch she's ever sewn!) The mom made a beautiful turning 20 and I have made about 3/4 of my baby pinwheel quilt. It's been a great day! Thanks for setting this up!

athenagwis 09-23-2012 01:50 PM

Wow how time flies!! I was able to get 3 blocks finished and took a few pictures. Now I am off to write a few more patterns. I had a flurry of ideas yesterday and I want to get them made before I forget the idea. :)

Update on VQD

I'm happy to report that I got both of the 2 mini quilts done. I went with the "french" (?) method for binding, also know as pillowcase method I think. So I just have to stitch the little hole closed and put the pop tabs on the back for hangers. It took me long as it appears that I didn't have the backs picked out. The one on the with black in it have two different types of stripes to add match the front. Also leftovers just like the front. I'm not sure what I'm working on just yet but I'm going to take a food break & get back to it. Maybe to do the layout of my boy's quilt. But Chances are I'll go do the handquilting on the baby quilt instead. LOL. I know -- sooooo decisive I am.

I am taking a little break since my grandson just woke up from his nap. I pinned all 13 rows. Soon I will start on the sewing. I don't usually pin much, but I wanted to be sure that everything ended up in it's correct place. I am only using nine fabrics but I don't want to take any chances.

My cat finally decided to take a long nap and I managed to get my strip sets sewn for the Halloween quilt. Now I am off to make homemade pizza with my DD for dinner. I am hoping to subcut the strip sets after dinner...maybe even get some of those blocks made :)

I have my little block ready for handwork now. It's wool appliqué on a cotton backing.
Now I'm going to square up my Aurifil BOM blocks & put their borders on, whew..... good thing I have to get up & come out to the computer for a little break, this is fun!

GingerK 09-23-2012 02:54 PM

Well, I didn't quilt but I did get into my sewing room. I altered a flat sheet to make a fitted sheet for our bed. We have one of those super deep matresses and it is almost impossible to find fitted sheets that don't ride up. Plus I saved myself about $40!

Thimblebug, those blocks are so cute. Love them. I got my log cabin quilted and squared up and started the binding. But, I am too tired to finish. Hopefully, I can finish after work tomorrow. Everyone have a restful evening.

Got my mystery quilt finished. It is made with childrens fabrics and when quilted will go to Project Linus. It doesn't show up very well in the pic but I though it turned out wonderful. I may just make another one of these. Now I am done for the day.

Need another break. Fitting these bias strips together to fit the size I need for each quadrant is time consuming and frustrating. Here is what the design looks like; the quadrants are 42" X 50" so they aren't square. Some of the lapas weren't qui-i-i-te long enough to cut the strips on the bias and fit into this space. I've had to struggle with each one to be sure I'll have enough on all edges to layer them for a double-sided look. For an easy appearing quilt, this is one of the more difficult ones I've done. Lots of new techniques and forethought on this one for me. Also a pic of some of the fabrics spread out together.

Love the embroideries! All the work looks so nice, isn't this fun!

I probably would have just gone down for a long nap and wasted today if not for this VQD; thank you, thank you for staging it and for all who are participating!!

I did it! Got to #5 on the list and finished 1/4th of the top!! I am so excited. I did a loop de loop pattern which seems to be easier for me than a plain meander. Some of my loops are beautiful and some have definite corners. Some of the stitches are PERFECT and some are very small or 1/4th inch long, but I am on my way to a completed quilt. I really think when it's washed and shrinks up, that it will look OK.

The projects done today are beautiful. Thanks, Rachel, for getting us all together!

After several pleasant interruptions, I got as far as selecting the fabrics for the setting triangles and borders. Not 100% satisfied with the outer border and haven't decided on widths for any of them. I didn't set up any expectations as to how much I wanted to accomplish today and pretty much putzed my way through the afternoon. I'm delighted to have this project moving forward. The colors are off in the photo. The inner border on the top looks the best in real life.

Thank you, Rachel, for setting up this VQD. I enjoyed seeing and hearing about what everyone was working on. Beautiful work everyone! Thanks for sharing!

athenagwis 09-23-2012 05:18 PM

So much progress by everyone today!! I have loved seeing all the pics!! :) Please keep sharing as you finish your projects. I am off to bed soon as I have to be up at 5:00 AM to work! :)

I have set the date for next month for October 14 if you want to set your calendars. Someone remind me to post a reminder thread as we get closer!! :) :) :) I am thinking we might take Nov and Dec off since those are notoriously busy months, but we'll play it by ear!!

I feel like I got quite a bit done today. I didn't sit down and really quilt as much as I would have liked, but at least I got something done!! That's a start.

Cheers!
Rachel

I made some good progress today. Got my top all put together, and one month of my PP blocks is done. Not as much done as I hoped today, but I did take time out to mow the lawn (for the last time this year, I hope). This was great fun, as usual, and I love seeing what everyone accomplished.

Now I'm going to take a break from sewing, and see if I can finish knitting my socks before bedtime tonight.

I have six rows done, seven to go. Once the rest are done sewing the rows together will be easy. I hope to get the top finished tonight. It is a little chilly here in S. Jersey so I think I will shut a few windows and keep on sewing. I enjoyed looking at everyone's progress today. I hope to join in again next month. Thanks ~Jen

Pat625 09-23-2012 05:42 PM

Guess I'm done for tonight as well. Took a break for dinner and got involved in a couple of classic movies; now I'm out of the mood. But thank you for helping me get more done than I'd have otherwise!! Looking forward to this again.

Well, I didn't get anything done on my list except for shopping. I've been fighting off a flu bug and shopping wiped me out. Got home, ate lunch, and crashed on the couch. Stupid flu bug!!

I did manage to gripe at my husband enough about my design wall woes that he's going to let me poke holes in the wall, though. (He was sad to see it had all come down too, he's been unusually interested in this particular quilt design.) And I did find the fabric I need to border my one-block-wonder quilt. So not a COMPLETELY wasted day. :)

LTeachergeorge 09-23-2012 06:52 PM

I was not very focused today. Which means I didn't accomplish much. Then took a break this afternoon for DGD birthday party. Did nothing after I returned home. But I really enjoyed seeing everyone's projects!! Thank you, Rachel, for organizing today. See you in October!

Linda
