I've had this happen from JoAnns' as well as some of the most expensive pieces of fabric from well-known manufacturers... so I will not put one down over the other.. I have bought buckoos of fabric, and just love making quilts and throws with them; and I'll bet with my next comment I'll get a lot of boo's but I even use polyesters for quilt tops. When you want a quilt to be able to withstand many washings as for babies, or in nursing homes where much washing is needed, these stand up to a lot of hard wear... yes, they are not the good cotton, but very substantial in use.

No boos, just praise, good to use up very serviceable fabric. You are correct in using them for nursing homes, homesless shelters or any place that will give the fabric a "run for the money". There was a great pattern for making sleeping bags for the homeless shelters. Cot size, use old matress covers and batting, sandwitch between knit fabrics and quilt at 10" intervals. Use sturdy tie materials to tie the sandwich into a foldover and roll, secure with a baggage type wrap or bungy. These are often called "ugly quilts" but are beautifu for someone in need of a warm bed. I still like making utility quilts for durable purposes!

I really like Connecting Threads. I love their thread and fabric. Is it Moda...no. But, doesn't cost as much either.
You can get some really nice fabric on clearance for $3.95.

crankygran 11-01-2010 12:13 PM

I agree and love their threads, too.

Sorry, but if you read their website carefully it states that some of their fabric is printed in Indonesia, which is not America (either North America nor the U.S.). I really don't care where the fabric comes from (I buy a lot of fabric overseas). I made my earlier statement because people make comments that they like Connecting Threads because their fabric is made in the USA or made in America - when it isn't necessarily. The idea is based on Connecting Threads making their made with USA cotton statement, but that has nothing to do with where the fabric is made or printed.

I also suspect they are using the fiber-reactive same dyes and probably the same finishes that are used in other fabrics. Where does it say on their website they do something different?

I LOVE CT fabrics AND threads1

Just ordered $50+ fabrics last week to get free shipping and it should arrive any day.

I always check out the clearance fabrics first. Last week they had a great selection of $2.48 and $2.96 yd fabrics. Can't beat that. I love that they've now added the Mirage colors with great prices.

All the fabrics that I've received from CT has been great quality, better than Joanns, feels great similar to Northcott, which is so much more expensive.

The only 'complaint' that I have is that sometimes the colors aren't what I see on my computer screen. I don't think that they use an actual photo of the fabric, not sure how to explain it. But even tho the fabric color is different than I expected, it just finds itself comfortably in my stash.

warm quilt hugs, sue in CA

IMO the Connecting Threads' fabric ads are rather misleading ... (I've bought their fabrics & threads, good quality, nice kits) BUT - only the COTTON is grown here. Their fabrics are actually manuf & printed OUTSIDE the US in Mexico & Indonesia
Just a sad truth of our times ... One day (soon) we're going to wake up and find the REST of the world with ALL the goods !!

Sorry, but "AMERICAN MADE" does NOT mean Made in Mexico or Indonesia (& No offense to Mexico/ Indonesia)

I think it is of much better quality than Hancock or JoAnn's.
I order it quite often and so does my fussy friend,LOL

poultney 11-01-2010 02:19 PM

I have always been pleased with the thread from Connecting Threads. In fact, I am expecting an order any day now from them.

crt 11-01-2010 02:40 PM

What I've gotten from them is much better than Joann's.

I like their fabrics. Do you quilt for Quilts for Kids? We have a local chapter and make lots. I sell fabric and I sell to them at my cost + shipping. It's about 3 yards for $10.00. I've attached a sample. Tell me more about your charity quilting.

I love batiks so took a chance on Connecting Threads batiks at $5.96/yard. It is wonderful. The colors are vibrant. The fabric has a nice hand to it. I, for one, will be going back for more! At that price, you can't beat it!

Yes, and I noticed that CT has reduced many of the prices on their prints. I'm really interested in CTs solids, mirages and batiks - think I will order a charm pack of each and see. Also, so that I can see the color variations, e.g. from one green to the next, when planning a project.

Speaking of prices - check the difference in CT pre-cut prices vs. big name mfr'r prices - WOW. I think CT is a step above most of Joann's fabrics but I was disappointed in the tone - everything I ordered seemed a bit dull. Hence, my idea to buy charms as samples.

I also like their thread - cheaper than Superior, though not as thin for log cabins, etc. - and great to use in the bobbin when I'm quilting, in addition to piecing.

I try to be green, even when it is inconvenient, and I know that this is only one of millions of manufactured items, but how anti earth friendly to ship all the raw materialsacross the world only to ship back the finished goods.....

tweety2 11-01-2010 03:14 PM

hsquiltingmom,

I received a kit from one of our quilters and it came from
CT and I love the material. I think it beats JoAnn's by far.

They have such nice stuff. Shirley

I was in Joann's 2 days ago and saw some quilt fabric for 14.99 a yard!! I was shocked! My LQS has much nicer fabrics for 9.99.. I did however find some real Robert Kaufman fabrics on that same day. Granted they are older patterns - but still - it surprised me to see it at Joann's. I say if you like the fabrics at CT - buy them and use them. If you are a diehard for LQS - do that - either way I will keep quilting!!
One other thought - CT fabrics can't be any worse than making a quilt w/fabrics found at thrift stores - tough to truly determine quality and content with those.

Jingle 11-01-2010 03:31 PM

I have bought Connecting Threads fabrics and have loved them. Some may not think the quality is as good as LQS, but, the cost isn't as high either. Very good quality and very good prices.

Think you can google them and request a catalog.

Lucy90 11-01-2010 04:45 PM

I have ordered many times from Connecting Threads and have been very satisfied. Quilt shop fabric may be a little better, but it is definitely much better then Joann's. They are very easy to deal with if there is a problem. I would recommend it highly.

Quilter4HireAndFun 11-01-2010 04:46 PM

Well, I just received my first order from CT...I have passed it around in our quilting class of 30 people. Many have sewn for many, many years and some of them professionally. The final opinion was that it was very good material. Now, I am on to washing it and quilting it both with a longarm machine, domestic and by hand. And that will tell the rest of the story for us.
But I would be happy to use it. I used to be a fabric snob...but I have found flaws in fabric I have paid $14 per yard for...and that was 100% cotton for quilting fabric from a shop. So I guess, buyer beware as always...but I will continue to shop CT for now!

ditto - i have probably spent over 1,000.00 with them and have never been disappointed yet. I just ordered some batting from them for the first time, so I'm waiting to see if I like their batting as much as I like their fabric. Service is great and so is the delivery time (and I'm in Nova Scotia)

Otterhound 11-01-2010 05:06 PM

Just purchased a package with a lot of fat quarters, batik. Great quality and the price was right. I think it was $117 with free shipping for 77 or so fat quarters. Have purchased before, always please with them. Miss their shop in Vancouver, Wa, it was not to far from home.

katiebear1 11-01-2010 05:14 PM

Love their stuff. Much better than Joanns or Hacocks

The words you need to look for in any product to determine where it was actually made is "Product of _______ (name of country". No other wording means that it was produced in that country. So only something labeled Product of the United States of America was actually produced here.

Here's a quote from their web site: "Connecting Threads has very high standards for the International manufacturers we choose to work with."
I think their catalog used to say they used USA cotton, woven in North America, which I always thought meant Mexico. But how many Quilt Shop Fabrics are made in USA??? I'll bet none.

raynhamquilter 11-01-2010 06:19 PM

I have ordered a couple of times and I have been very happy. Saving up for some batiks. Great service.

PKITTY1 11-01-2010 06:24 PM

I've had great service from Connecting Threads. I just bought some quilt books during their recent 40% off sale and got free shipping as the order was over $50. Even before that, I, who do not usually buy kits, bought some of their samplers. The fabric in the kits was good quality and sewed well. I don't have any complaints about the company as I believe they give good service, have good prices, and good products.

Check out their new color thread sets. Now I have to save to get all the new one. Have all 7 sets of last ones. Can't wait to get them!

I just ordered the sampler of the 2.5" strips of Batiks (78 fabrics). I already had about 16 of the Mirage blenders. I think they are both very nice. Send me you snail mail address and I will send you a sample package.

quiltergirl80 11-01-2010 07:05 PM

I think it's better than Joann's but not as good as quilt shop quality. I won't buy it for personal projects.

cimarron 11-01-2010 07:05 PM

I like Connecting Threads OK, better than JoAnns, etc. anyway. Still like Moda, etc. over CT though. Watch for sales at LQS myself...

I agree with you justme2. I love the learning process, and am always looking for something new to try.

Roseysue 11-01-2010 07:57 PM

I just received my first "batch" of connecting threads fabric. I would say that by the way it feels and how it washed, it is better quality than Joannes and for the price, (half of what a quilt shop charges), a value that is worth considering.

bjdemir 11-01-2010 08:41 PM

I am still learning all the time. I have found that it doesn't seem to matter where or how much you pay, there are fabrics that ravel no matter what. I am making a quilt with all fabrics from my LQS. 2 of them ravel - one does not. I am also making a baby quilt from fabric from Mexico (100% US cotton), a piece from LQS and another piece give to me by a friend and none of them ravel. Really nice to work with no ravels!! I have not ordered from CT but there are a couple of kits that are of interest in their new catalog.
