I think this is perfect for 9 Patch Pizzazz? Before I bought the book I Googled and looked at amazing pictures of what people have created with this pattern....it's easy peasie ~ fast and every quilt is so unique!
http://www.amazon.com/9-Patch-Pizzaz...7574355&sr=8-1 I'm making one right now for SIL as he is a firefighter and the fabric I'm using just needed a big block here and there to show the firefighter fabric and not be lost in smaller pieces... |
I agree with putting the cats as
a center panel with multiple borders. Love the colors and cats. J J |
I agree, that Attic Window pattern would be awesome. You could use your solid fabrics for the frames with a cat cut in the middle.
|
i'm a cat lover, where in the world did you get that???
how about a jacket for yourself, (like a fall one with a hood). you can make the pockets out of it. or a really cute tote |
Maybe fussy cut around the cats and applique them on whatever quilt design you choose.

You already have a '"way" with log cabins, as evident in your avatar! |
How about a churn dash block with fussy cutting the cats and using them in the center or any other block such as a star, any block that you would need a center block would work great.

I wish I could help you out with a pattern, but I really love that fabric, nice colors. I love cats and have several pieces of cat fabric, but haven't been able to come up with a pattern. Some day I will get inspired and you may see the results on QB, until then I'll keep searching. I wish you luck in your quest.

I immediately thought TOTE BAG!!

warm wishes. Incorporate the fabric you have on the side to make the 3 strip block.
|
I have a friend who is a design master and she uses fabric like you have in a "cotton crazy quilt" block. She cuts out the cat with five sides, then proceeds to fill in around the block with the other colors in strips or pieces until she has the size block she wants. Georgeous colors and design!!!
|
Wow I love the cats....I would definitly use black as your boarder...black would surly set it off for sure.....not sure about the orange and light blue...think maybe to stay with darker shades that would balance everything...just my opinion though...Iam sure whatever you do its going to look beautiful....Trish

Any creative thoughts on how to use them together, and which pattern to try? I'm trying to figure out whether to use the electric blue as a filler or if I should use black against the brights...I know I'll need some more of some color. Thanks in advance for any thoughts! Instead take the fabric to your printer and make a copy of the part of the fabric that has your favorite cat in the middle. Take the printed paper copy and cut out your favorite cat. Now blow that up 250% or 300%. Magically you have a pattern to make a big cat to applique onto the front of the FQ.Just the shape is enough. Practice making a face with a permanent marker - or embroider it. Then use the strips to make borders until you get the size of quilt you want. |
4 patch posie!!

Since your balis are already in strips, it seems to be calling out to be log cabin around the cat fabric as a focal square. I did it with bird fabric and it worked great! You can use anything between a 3" and 5" focal square and build your cabin around it. It also works for courthouse steps.
I would go a little scrappy and make each block different by using different strips in the log cabin. log cabin around a focal square |
Could you use the cat fabric for the center of the 10 minute block?

You can make the center extra large. Instead of piece 1,2 and 3 make it just one piece then add the rest of the strips.
Just saw your post Wildyard! Great minds......

Love the cats. They cry for fussy cut or full as a panel.
Like the example from Wildyard and her log cabin block. |
This fabric is too cute to cut, so just quilt it as is, maybe quilt around the cats to make them "POP".

|
I wouldn't be able to cut this cute fabric and would use it for a panel in the center.

I don't think you have to use the foundation to do these, I just wanted to try it since I hadn't before. |
Linda thank you for the information....I love working on blocks and I try to do different ones...I started quilting about 5 years ago and I first learned and loved doing crazy quilting......which I continue to do...but my new interest is using all my leftover fabric that continues to grow lol...so when I saw your block kinda reminded me in a way its almost like crazy quilting..thx again...Trish

you are very welcome trish and anyone else who might find the info helpful.. Hugs and smiles, all

The cats need to be the focus fabric. Maybe something where the cats will be in the center. Love that fabric!
|
If you cut on the diagonal you get nine cats in a diamond., three on each side. Could start there? Love the cats.

What is foundation piecing? Is it like sewing lincoln log around a block you like?
In that particular case, I used random width strips from my scraps. It was my first try at foundation piecing so I just stopped when I got to the edge of my pre-cut foundation square. My center square was 5". I sewed the strip and stopped before I got to the end, folded it back on itself and trimmed it at the edge of the block. I repeated that with each strip using my small ruler to make sure I was staying square. I don't think it matters what size you cut your strips unless you want them all the same. I don't think you have to use the foundation to do these, I just wanted to try it since I hadn't before.
|
foundation piecing is when you are sewing your pieces to another layer which serves as the foundation. In my photo you can see the white poly that I am stitching mine to. You can also use paper, muslin or whatever you want. If you use paper, you tear it off afterwards. If you use any type of fabric, it remains a permanent part of your block. A foundation provides stability when you are using lots of small or narrow pieces. I didn't need one in this block but just wanted to try the technique.
