curious

I was wondering on making a double wedding ring quilt. What is thebest and easiest pattern to use? I havent worked verymuch with curves. My mom has been wanting one for years, so asim trying to gather enough scraps for a postage stamp I would try my handat it. Thanks for any advice!

Carla79 05-30-2012 07:08 PM

Sorry for all the jumbled words gotta love getting used to new phones lol...

Understand the typing learning curve. But now I'm so used to iPad it feels weird typing on keyboard. Sorry never did the wedding ring pattern.

MaryMo 05-30-2012 07:59 PM

There are some cheater (easier) ways to make double wedding ring ... check out some of those on the internet. I started one but did not get very far with it. Good luck to you.

burchquilts 05-30-2012 09:54 PM

Do you want to make the kind with a solid arc piece (I don't know the "real" name of it --- sorry!) or the pieced kind?

bakermom 05-30-2012 10:41 PM

Eleanor Burns does a video showing how to make one in her "Egg Money Quilts". she uses Quiltsmart interfacing and a wedge template

JustAbitCrazy 05-31-2012 04:01 AM

In some patterns the circles are not round, but more like squares with rounded corners, while other patterns make circles which are round (in case it matters to you). There are also templates for the shapes you can rotary cut around. I have always thought I would buy them when I got around to making one of these--just haven't done it yet.

faykilgore 05-31-2012 04:44 AM

share what you find as this is definitely on my "to do" list!

SandScraps 05-31-2012 05:36 AM

I would go for the Eleanor Burns one in Egg Money Quilt. It is super easy and very quick.

gramarraine 05-31-2012 05:42 AM

I made one this spring and it is definately the hardest quilt I have made. Eleanor Burns makes everything easy so I would try her pattern. I did not have good instructions and I am sure that made it harder to do than if I had had good instructions. Good luck.

Carla79: I googled and found these:

http://www.simplicity.com/t-Simpli-E...ilt-Block.aspx
http://www.french-knots.com/wp-conte...dding_ring.pdf
http://www.quilterscache.com/D/Doubl...RingBlock.html
http://www.mccallsquilting.com/patte....html?idx=6913

Hopefully out of these you can find what you are looking for. Good luck. I can't wait to see photos of your first Wedding Ring quilt! My mother also loves this quilt so if yours turns out I may just have to give it a try!

Someone posted a photo of a lovely DWR that looked to be possably a QAYG. Looked like that would be doable. Don't remember the poster, but perhaps she/he will see this and join in.. Good luck. DWRs are an altime favorite!

PGFlowers 05-31-2012 07:12 AM

You might want to check out Linda Frantz's Inklingo. She has the double wedding pattern where you print the pieces on your fabric using freezer paper.

Ccorazone 05-31-2012 07:39 AM

I am using die cut pieces with the large one pieces arc. I am finding the pattern easier than I thought it would be, but again, I am using die cut fabric. Sending you a PM.

yngldy 05-31-2012 08:54 AM

I have instructions and ruler for the DWR from Cheryl Phillips that I bought years ago at a show. She sewed strips together and then cut with the ruler. The book is called Rings that bind. Looked really easy. Have it on the to do list. Her link is http://www.phillipsfiberart.com/faq/

If I were going to make a DWR quilt, I would use Judy Niemeyer's method. Here is the link to that:

Here is some discussion on this board awhile back that I have bookmarked. There are several ideas there, as well:

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

this was the first DWR I've ever made.
I used the templates of Shar Jorgenson and I was surprised how easy it was to make this quilt.
I know already I'm going to make at least one more in the future

Fien777, this looks like my first Wedding Ring Quilt....I made it in the late 90's using blues and mauve. As a beginner I too was surprised at how non-difficult it was. The arcs are better than making so many little pieces.

CarrieC 05-31-2012 11:37 AM

QUILT SMART!!!!!!

I've started this quilt 10 times over the past years. I finally broke down and bought a quilt smart packet (WITH THE TEMPLATE) and it is a BREEZE!!! I love it.

Pat625 05-31-2012 12:38 PM

Good Luck..I started one and it ended up in the trash years ago..would like to try again someday but it's not on the top of my list right now

Carla79 05-31-2012 04:48 PM

Thanks everyone! I actually seen her on you tube and she made it look so easy. I looked for her book and templates but the site I found them on was sold out. I will have to look again thanks

jeanneb52 06-01-2012 02:58 AM

I've done several...it is not something that goes quickly unless you use the cheaters. Check out Marti Mithcel(sp?) or other patterns. I tend to do mine by hand to do the arcs and then machine piece the "footballs" formed by the arc pieces to the centers. Then you put the puzzle together, all weird peices. LL You can do it! But it will not be fast or easy. Good luck with it.

quiltmom04 06-01-2012 03:00 AM

I have worked some with curves and don't mind them. I've done several drunkards path quilts. I got the DWRing quilt templates from John Flynn because I'd heard that he had a quick way to do it. Basically it involves sewing a strip instead of cutting wedge shaped pieces, and then making an additional increase in the seams to make the piece curve. A different process to be sure, but still labor intensive. But the hardest part of the process is NOT piecing the curves, it is making the pieced curves have the ACCURATE shape. If you're off even a little, it lays funny. I took a class to make a tablerunner, but never finished it because I just didnt like the process. Obviously lots of people do, and I'm impressed with their work, but its not for me. (As you can see from my avatar, I don't avoid tedious work!) I agree with whoever said use one of those cheater fabrics , or just make the curves a solid piece. Good luck!

Cindy60545 06-01-2012 03:25 AM

I have one in my UFO pile that needs to be finished. It's being done as an applique. It's on my list to be finished & then on to another one as my DD just asked for one for her! I have the Rings that Bind book & tool & intend on using that method for the next one.

jitkaau 06-01-2012 03:33 AM

This one is a good cheater way. I have it and recommend you watch the video to understand the method.

coopah 06-01-2012 04:03 AM

Right now, my mother (84 years young) and I are working on a double wedding ring that is pieced. We bought the fabrics and had them laser cut, thinking that would help the accuracy. The only problem is the directions for piecing are not wonderful. Then I saw a book (around $20) by the company that cut the pieces which was much more detailed. I hate to spend the $$ when it should have been okay with directions already sent. So, my advice on the wedding ring is...don't do it this way. No suggestions about a better way...I don't like the looks of the turned applique or other cheater methods...really thought I had this whipped with the laser cuts. They DO help, but need better instructions.

patinpoconos 06-01-2012 04:18 AM

Check out John Flynn's method.....strip piecing with darts......I got the book and found it great.

3incollege 06-01-2012 04:24 AM

It is a very nice pattern. I am making one for my daughter, it is taking awhile for me to finish it. I am using paper piecing method. each square is a different fabric. I am using batiks.

Dodie 06-01-2012 04:36 AM

in a group where I sew one lady has finished one and is on her second by paper piecing looks very easy but I don't know who makes the pattern could ask her

SandyQuilter 06-01-2012 05:15 AM

You can't go wrong with Marti Michelle templates/patterns. The corners are cut so that every patch meets perfectly. It takes a few more seconds to cut, but worth every bit of time. And it's not that hard to do a Double Wedding Ring, the curves are gentle.

kellen46 06-01-2012 06:16 AM

Don't worry about if it is hard or easy. Just get started with one block, take it step by step until that block is done, repeat until you have enough blocks. It does not matter how long it takes, just keep going. It is like the old question of how do you eat an elephant.....one bite at a time.

nativetexan 06-01-2012 06:32 AM

there was a recent photo of a double wedding ring in here but it wasn't really curves. looked great. i can't remember the designer though. (wasn't Pam Bono) anyone remember??

Robinlee 06-01-2012 08:44 AM

Judy Neimeyer as a beautiful Wedding ring that is pretty easy to do.

ctilburg 06-01-2012 09:02 AM

I recommend a Quiltsmart interfacing and just sew it. Easiest I know.

urgodschild2 06-01-2012 09:09 AM

I made one for my Daughter 10 years ago and it was easy but darn if I can remember what pattern I used. I remember that the templates were wedges that you pieced together to make the circle. I loved how easy it was to put together.

jaciqltznok 06-01-2012 10:36 AM

Shar Jorgenson template set!

carolynjo 06-01-2012 10:36 AM

I have made two cheater DWR quilts and when they are quilted, you would be hard-pressed to tell that they were not pieced. Maybe you could look for some of that fabric.

I am going to start a DWR soon for my son and fiance. I actually borrowed Egg Money Quilts to check out the measurement. The book is about making a sampler, and the yardage amounts are only for making two blocks.

After spending an inordinate time on the web looking for yardage amounts, I decided to buy Quiltsmart. In Eleanor's book she tells you to buy Quilt Smart to make the blocks.

On the QS web site, they have a "kit" with foundation interface and wedge tool fr smaller quilts. They do have a "kit" for larger sized quilts. I had to call QS direct and they helped me order the set for larger quilts. (I'm making a king size).

I looked at almost all the methods mentioned above, just read what they were like. I ended up with QS because it sounded right. I think it is a personal decision after looking around.

Latrinka 06-01-2012 02:16 PM

I love that one, but haven't got the courage to try one yet!
