I have been thinking about making a d9p quilt top. I have noticed some are 3 + colors. I am trying to decide which way I want to go. Can you all please chime in and let me know which you like more (less patterns/colors or more) and why. If you have a photo of your d9p can you post it and tell me how many different fabrics used and the placement of the fabrics to make your specific quilt? I am leaning towards 4 to 5 fabrics. Thanks in advance.

I have only made 2 d9p, and you will get many better answers, but I was pleased with mine. Both were small quilts for a cat (yes, really), and I used 3 fabrics. Let me see if I can find pictures. I am a fairly new quilter and I was surprised how easy the d9p was!

Thanks for the quick reply. Your cat quilts are very cute. Thank you!

I use lots of prints in mine, but try to keep to a few colors. I like to use the same color for all of the centers, then my preference is to keep the 4 outer corners of the 9 patch either all light or all dark, and the opposite for the rest. I did a B&W with Turquoise and am working on a blue/green/yellow one. I like the B&W one best. The other one is busier than I envisioned. I only have a pic of the B&W one and the safari one, not for the blue/green/yellow. The Safari one I made using a panel for the squares and border print for the border.

What size do you make cat quilts? This would be a perfect solution for gift giving to the cat people friends.

I love your B&W with the teal center. I have been wanting to do a B&W and this would take care of both! Thanks for the indepth description of where you placed your colors also!

Very pretty! I like how you used the three colors but with 9 different fabrics.

Mine was just 3 fabrics, red, ivory and pink. I'm currently making one from charm packs of blue/yellow/ivory/green floral patterns, I hope it turns out as nice as the first.

I love using this block. I am making one with Halloween fabrics that will be a tablecloth when finished.

This one uses nine fabrics. We wanted a scrappy look.

I can never just do things the simple way so I did a twisted sampler style version. I believe I used 3 fabrics. I purposely made each block different and forced myself to use at least one normal D9P in each block.

IMHO, the fewer colors you use, the better you can see the pattern of the quilt. Love what has been posted!

GwynR 10-10-2011 08:11 PM

wesing, I love yours!!!

interesting, wonder why they call it heirloom!

Peckish 10-10-2011 10:27 PM

I think she called it Heirloom because that's the name of the fabric line she used.

Thanks! I was inspired by a different quilt in similar colors that was hanging at the LQS. I thought I had a picture since I completed the center of the top but can't find it...must be in my laptop. I still have to put borders on it, but life has gotten in the way of that. Things will settle down in a week or two and I can get back to finishing it.

QultingaddictUK 10-11-2011 01:32 AM

http://inlinethumb59.webshots.com/42...425x425Q85.jpg This was a complete scrappy one, just used the same fabric in the centre block to coordinate.

http://inlinethumb51.webshots.com/44...425x425Q85.jpg This one I called Raspberry fields cos of the colours and was made from umm I think 5 different fabrics.

I made this for my extra bedroom. I didn't want to change curtains or the bedskirt. I used three fabrics.

stitchengramie 10-11-2011 02:29 AM

I never did a D9P before. I have learned a lot from your posting. There are so many wonderful looking quilt pattern and color ideas to choose from.

I think that I will add a D9P quilt to my list of quilts to make. Maybe for myself!

nclauri 10-11-2011 02:50 AM

Thanks! These are all beautiful. I thought it would help me make a decison, but it has made it harder. I guess I will have to make one with 3 colors and a second with around 9!!

This is one with 9 different fabrics, the corners are larger prints, the inner blocks pale/small prints and the center the all the same. I then put it together in patterened fashion as opposed to a scrappy way.

My first quilt is a d9p. Chose this for sake of ease and so far, so good. I am using 4 colors and 9 fabrics. The aussiequilts one is gorgeous. Now I want to do one. I wonder how many she used?

I am currently working on a D9P for a Christmas gift. I used two colors, but did half the blocks with the light fabric in the corners and half with the dark. I have the blocks done and ready for the next step.

mummadee 10-11-2011 03:33 AM

I have made the D9P using charm packs. I was thrilled with the way it turned out since it was my first completed quilt. Might be a bit busy for some, but not for me.

Drew 10-11-2011 03:50 AM

Thanks for asking. I really enjoy looking at the different patterns and colors!

I just sort of made mine up, and so far, all have been different sizes, based on the size of my block. The one I just finished is 16 inches by 22 inches. The two in the pictures I have already given away, but each is larger than that. Think larger than a place mat .... Chances are, the cat won't really lay on it anyway. :) Cats are just like that.

I made my last one, the 16" x 22" just gib enough so I could tuck it in a basket that one of my cat lies on. I just finished it yesterday, and so far he has ignored it.

catmcclure 10-11-2011 04:42 AM

I had a friend who did a D9Patch with only three fabrics - all the same placement. When she assembled the quilt, she put all the blocks on point, all facing exactly the same way. It was amazing.

munchkinmama 10-11-2011 04:52 AM

It is hard to go wrong with D9P. Whatever you decide will be pretty.
