Now I'm wondering what this quilt looks like? There are a lot of good suggestions and we will be looking forward to seeing what you end up doing!

I like the dust ruffles idea also. If you can't find any brown one, here is how I have made my dust ruffles.

1) I get decorator fabric (light weight) and use my serger (or sewing machine) to make a ruffle in the width I like (2 to 1 or 3 to 1 ratio).

2) And I do this way the most- I buy 2 king flat sheets and cut strips in the height that I need and ruffle that fabric. I buy cheap sheets because they seem to have just the amount of body that hangs nicely.

I have done the double ruffle by making one out of a printed sheet fabric and attaching that to the quilt, and then bought sheet or fabric in a solid color for the dust ruffle that goes on the bottom mattress.

if you can't find dark brown, why not make them?

i too made one of my first quilts..for myself and it too was not big enough...but i made a sleeve for it ,bought a real nice pole and had my boys hang it up behind the bed...its either that or perhaps lay it across your sofa...enjoy it..its from your mom

I had that same problem with a quilt I wanted to put on my new king bed. I put a queen size sheet on top of the bed and found it was exactly the same size as the mattress. I bought some fabric that went with the quilt from Joann's and sewed a skirt around three sizes of the sheet. This make a dust ruffle that fit from the top of the mattress to the floor. It works great!

If it is not big enough but needs to be displayed or used because your mum made it, I suggest to get a coordinating cover that will fit your bed and then, when the bed is made up, place your mum's quilt over the bed so that it sits like a diamond in the middle. It will look OK if the underneath one either matches or contrasts nicely. Other than that, get a Hanger and hang it on your wall at the head of your bed.

Use it as a bed runner.

I would put on the bed first a plain neutral spread or even a blanket (something that would be colorwise a nice blend or contrast to the quilt). Then put the quilt on top of this. Depending on the size you may even put the quilt on point. You can enjoy the quilt and you won't even notice what is under the quilt. Once you have it in place you may want to tack the quilt in place.
