disappearing marker pen

I need to draw on fabric and was wondering if anyone has used these pens. When you iron over the marking it is suppose to disappear. Any info would be greatly appreciated.........Thank you , Michele

marytoddliz 02-29-2012 12:50 PM

I used one and it disappeared after a few weeks. Or right away if you get it wet.

My husband used it to write a check, not the signature just the amount! We sure were surprised when we got a call asking if we really intended to send a signed blank check!

I have used a couple different brands and they work nicely. I do, however, always test a piece of fabric first. I have used some white one and just recently started using some jell type. Sorry, I'm not at home right now so I am unable to tell you the brand.

It depends on what kind of pen it is. Some if you iron it will set the ink, some you get out with water and some gradually disappear in the air. OR if you are talking about the Frixion pens that disappear when ironed over there are several discussions on QB on Frixion pens(type in Frixion Pens in search box). One word of caution for the frixion pens is that on dark fabrics they can sometimes leave a faded or bleached line? The marks do reappear if the fabric gets cold enough. I do use them for my small sewing projects.

ckcowl 02-29-2012 01:24 PM

there are a number of different (disappearing) ink pens- the newest ones i know of are the frixon pens that when you press them they disappear- a lady at a lqs told me the colored ones leave a white line- the black one disappears.- any marking (tool) you use should be tested before using on your project---no matter what - or who recommended it- you should always test! i have ruined beautiful quilt tops because someone said---just use this it always comes out---well---guess what----not always... always test

RedGarnet222 02-29-2012 02:02 PM

I use the frixson pen all the time. (spelled wrong.. but it is the iron off one.) The only thing I have to say is test it out on your fabrics first. I had one medium toned fabric lighten up at the place where I used the black one after ironing. It didn't matter on that quilt, but like I say test on the fabric you are using.

There are a few more colors available now too I noticed. I haven't tried any but the black.

Our guild uses the Frixeon (sp?) pens. Like one of the above posters said, test first. Our experience is that they "fade" really well on light-coloured fabrics, but on very dark fabrics they seem to leave a white-ish or silvery line behind (that's with ironing - I don't know what happens if you just leave it to fade with time, or wash it).

I have used a Pilot FriXion pen in blue, with 'Cowboy Spring' by Prim-Point Designs, which was a color with crayons and embroidery, all the marks disapeared when I set the coloring with my iron after doing embroidery. I am now working on Merry Little Christmas by Crab-apple Hill with this same pen and so far have been very satisfied with the pen.

hearthhush 02-29-2012 04:32 PM

I love the FriXion pens, i have used the black and yellow. Wonderful. had no trouble with them.

rachelg 02-29-2012 04:39 PM

I just did a quilt using a Mark B Gone pen from walmart. It is bright blue ink and washed out in cold water. Stayed on til I washed too. So I could mark and not worry about it disappearing when I have to leave it for extended periods. But I am new to all this.....and don't have a quilting store near me so Walmart was it.

Rose L 02-29-2012 04:40 PM

I use the Frixion pens and because of all the controversy I ran my own tests on them. I found that the lines mostly disappear with ironing and return when placed in the freezer. I then washed and dried the fabrics and put them back in the freezer. The ink was completely gone after washing. Not an issue for me because I wash everything after it's finished.

nonnie60 02-29-2012 05:00 PM

I love the Frixion pens. I haven't had any problems, but use caution as stated. You can find them at the office supply stores very reasonable. I just picked up 2 pkts of three at Staples for $7. Not a bad deal to keep them around. I also like the Clover marking chalk wheel. It comes in several colors and you just brush off.

Lois-nounoe 02-29-2012 05:07 PM

I have used the Frixion pen in black to mark my embrodery lines for my quilt labels and quilting lines on one of them. The fabric was all white and the iron took out all the lines. I love the fine line they make. I am told that they might return at 14 degrees but not many of us will be putting our quilts in the freezer nor will they be going to places where they will be exposed to that temp. Since I wash all my quilts before they leave then I shouldn't have to worry about that anyway, right RoseL?

Rubesgirl 02-29-2012 05:55 PM

I love the FriXion pens & haven't had a problem with markings returning after I iron them. :-)

gotta-sew 02-29-2012 08:45 PM

I use the frixion pens as well and love them with no problems. Even a blow dryer will errase it. Or throw the item in the dryer, marks are gone.

lalaland 02-29-2012 09:35 PM

I've used the Pilot FriXion ball pen in red and blue and never had any problem with either of them. A gal in a local quilt shop told me to buy them at the stationery store, they are a lot cheaper there than in the quilt shops.

katigirl 03-01-2012 12:51 AM

I have used them and have them disappear even before I am ready for the to do so. Not sure if they should do this or whether I just take too long to stitch them. lol.

Marni 03-01-2012 05:33 AM

Frixion pens are my choice-I love them! Just press and the markings disappear!

Rose Marie 03-01-2012 05:46 AM

I use the blue disapearing ink pens but only do a small section at a time since the lines fad out fast.
Never have had a problem using them.

homebody323 03-01-2012 05:55 AM

The mark be gone pens are my choice for light colored fabrics - sometimes when they dry they will come back. To avoid this problem mix a tsp of baking soda in a pint of distilled water. Learned this trick from a chemist, something to do with the mineral content of the water. She was also a quilter.
As for dark fabrics, I go for my tailors wax piece. Always test on a edge or something when marking a customer quilt. If there is any poly content in the fabric there will be a faint evidence of the mark. Remove this with your iron. If you don't have it, get a few friends to go in with you on a box of the stuff. I get it from Atlanta Thread and just a piece or two lasts me for years. Its the giant one. Don't buy the colors - don't come out. The company seems to have merged with another and the wax is on sale. I teach my new customers about using the wax and give them a sample piece when they first start coming to me for quilting.

There are situations in which the Pilot FriXion pen ink will not wash out. See:

http://quiltingclimber.blogspot.com/...evaluated.html

Please note that she only did a few tests. You should always experiment with your starch, etc on your fabric and your water, etc.

annies-best 03-01-2012 12:02 PM

you were lucky it didn't fall into the wrong hands

Another vote for the Pilot FriXion pens! Magic!

Never have had a problem using them.

These are what I also use as I have to use polyester batting and you can't iron it. I have never had a problem but I only do a small area at a time.

purplemem 03-01-2012 08:01 PM

I use the blue mark b gone that comes out in water, but not on pink fabrics. It will leave a mark on pink.
I also use the purple air erase markers and have not ever had a problem with them. I don't always quilt fast enough and have to remark sometimes.

I have used the washable markers by crayola, they made a nice bright line but one of the colors did not come out, it left a shadow where I quilted - I don't remember which color.

I have had a problem with the blue chaco markers not coming out of fabrics so I don't use them now.

Pilot FriXion Pens are my new BF!!!! I Love them and they dont leave a mark!

grann of 6 03-02-2012 04:53 AM

Yes, I love them. Just make sure if you don't get to your project immediately, that it isn't under a fluorescent light, because it will disappear within a couple hours.

Elaine433 03-02-2012 05:52 AM

I have used the Mark B Gone pens when making garments where I might be marking something that will be hidden in the seam anyway. I have been tempted to mark on the quilt top but have been afraid that the marks would not be gone.

faykilgore 03-02-2012 06:03 AM

I tried the washable Crayola markers, also. The color I used left a yellow line. I probably left it on too long.

mrs. fitz 03-02-2012 06:07 AM

I've had good luck swith Frixion pens. Someone mentioned yellow. Haven't seen that yet but I've been hoping they come out with a light color. I'm going to a quilt show today and will be on the lookout.

hoppa 03-02-2012 06:32 AM

I have used the black Frixion pen that you iron out and had no problems with it

Gabrielle's Mimi 03-02-2012 06:54 AM

I love the Frixion pens. As everyone has said, test first! I recently used a dark blue, almost navy pen on pure white cotton to mark my quilting designs. The marks ironed out perfectly!

GrannieLOU 03-02-2012 07:03 AM

I have been using a blue Mark Be Gone pen and discovered that if you just put a light dot-dot-dot line instead of a continuous line it is much faster to remove. Sometimes you may need a solid line but make it with a very soft touch - in other words don't soak the fabric. Recently used it on a white-on-white fabric & had no problem removing although the heavier lines took a couple of tries - seemed to reappear in spots after the fabric dried.

janeknapp 03-02-2012 08:02 AM

With some of the pens it might make a difference if the fabric was prewashed before using the pens. The interaction of the ink in the pens with the sizing/spray starch in the fabric might make removal more difficult.

BarbaraSue 03-02-2012 08:04 AM

I am using the Pilot Frxion marking pen now. I am using the blue and so far have not had any trouble with it working as told. My DD uses the black. The only problem she had was when she had the marking on over a few days and then ironed it off. It bleached an area on her quilt. But it only happened in one spot. Whether that was a fluke, or because the length of time marked or the fabric we don't know. That has not happened on my quilt. But mine has only been marked in number of minutes. I mark then sew that iron it off, then mark another area and do likewise.
These pens work the best of anything I have worked with so far.

IdahoSandy 03-02-2012 09:01 AM

I have had problems with the disappearing ink when I hand quilt, as it disappears too quick. So I use the water or iron disappearing pens. I have a mister spray bottle I use and when I get through quilting, then mist the places that have blue pen marks. I get mine at JoAnns and Wal-mart and it should tell you on the side of the pen which is which.
Always test first.

weasier22 03-02-2012 10:30 AM

I have used a fabulous pen that I bought at my LQS. It's made by PILOT and is call FriXion Ball and it comes in different colors. All depends on the color of your fabric, so that the ink will show. After you sew...you just iron and it's gone! I love this pen! I have used it to draw around cookie cutters for motifs on quilts. I have not had any problem using this pen.
Hope this helps you.

janjer 03-02-2012 11:17 AM

I just found the FriXion by Pilot. I purchased mine at Office Max. They come in the erasable gel pen with a 0.7mm or a 0.5mm point. They also come in an erasable ball point (our Office Max didn't have ball point style). The gel pen came in red, blue and black. I haven't had it long enough to do an informative review, but my friend uses hers on quilts that her church hand quilts. She said they have had no trouble with the pen leaving marks on the quilt tops. Checking your own fabric is good advice.

grandmaquilter 03-02-2012 01:47 PM

I use the Pilot FriXion erasable gel pen, a warm iron will take the markings off, have had no problems with them not disappearing when ironed. Walgreen's carries them in our area, that is where I got mine.

Olivia's Grammy 03-02-2012 02:19 PM

I've used the FriXion pens. In my experience you really have to be careful with the red. It kept coming back after several pressings. I use the black quite a bit.
