NO, not all machines need to be oiled, the newer Vikings do not. I would look up Brother machines on the website and contact them with you specific model number. They will know----Better to be safe than sorry. Now my 33 year old Kenmore does need to be oiled, but I am not sure about the newer ones.

Everytime you take a machine in to be serviced they oil it in places you can't even get to. I did machine repair & service for 5 years and worked on every brand out there.

Don't know what website you went to for Brother, but I went in and typed in her model number and the question popped up as a FAQ---they say that if you are a moderate user (2-3 hours per day) it should be cleaned and oiled by an authorized Brother dealer every 500 hours. I you are a heavy user, with constant high speeds or more than 3 hours per day, then it should be cleaned and oiled every 300 hours. I would think if it is running ok, then once a year would be suffecient. Just google Brother Sewing Machines and you will see under Contact us

Not my new Janome. For that matter not my old Janome either.

My Viking is 3 yrs old & was told it doesn't need oil. I don't use it all the time, but it's overdue a checkup soon as I get this last batch of hemming done.

I was told my Janome should have a drop of oil in the bobbin "wick". I asked the wife of the repair man for Janome at the LQS about oiling and she said when he opens it up he cleans everything then oils every joint in sight! The manual says nothing about oiling. I oil any moving part on my Juki 98 and my Tin Lizzie 18 midarm quilt machine. The vintage machine yahoo groups say to oil where parts move against each other. I can handle an oil bottle, so I oil (and clean) my Janome, Lizzie, and Pfaff machines.

yes, one should know how to use the oil.

My Singer doesn't show any place in the manual, but under trouble shooting it says if it runs noisy to use a good quality sewing machine oil. My bobbin winder is getting noisy but I can't figure out where to put the oil. I tried the Singer web sight. There is nowhere on there to ask anything. ( no contact us)
