I am making my first quilt for a family member. Luckily, she doesn't sew. I want to set it on point and have come up one block short. Setting it square is not an option - did I tell you I'm a little stubborn? It's made with charm packs and I'm 6 squares short to be able to make another block.
I do have an idea, but every time I lay it out, all I get is confused. Maybe I'd better quit until morning.
At this point, I don't need advice, just someone to commiserate with me. If I grumble at my dogs, they'll think they are ones who did something wrong, not me. Thank you for listening.

Grammy o'5 01-01-2011 10:13 PM

Awwww! Yeah, take a break til tomorrow! ;) ;) You may come up with a new idea after you get some sleep! :P

gingerella 01-01-2011 10:22 PM

Something similar has happened to most of us. Take a break and take it up again tomorrow.

jayelee 01-01-2011 10:41 PM

Go ahead SCREAM it always makes me feel better sometimes i even throw it across the room

gzuslivz 01-01-2011 10:48 PM

Screaming is good. Also taking a break. Tomorrow you might just decide that a block with their name embroidered on it might look good (or something like that). Anyway, I can sympathize with you. I have screamed a time or two myself:-)

Anne P 01-01-2011 10:50 PM

I'm sorry you're so frustrated. I do agree that taking a short break will probably help you "see your way out." I'll think good thoughts for you!

Flying_V_Goddess 01-01-2011 10:53 PM

Scream now, take two chocolates, and continue in the morning.

jemma 01-01-2011 11:16 PM

chocolate fixes everything------put somthing in the middle

I've got a bit of home make irish cream in the fridge. Would that help any?

I'll drink a small cup for you, how about?

AnnieH 01-02-2011 01:57 AM

Allow yourself a break and good luck for tomorrow.

the "something like that" could be the label, surrounded by small borders pieced from any scraps you have left over.

either dead center, or in a corner. (if it's big enough for a bed, perhaps the top center where it will be covered by a pillow.)

makakehau 01-02-2011 02:44 AM

Yes mam. I have been trying to put together one riduculous six inch paper piece block for days now. Betcha I have literally invested 36 hours in that %5$$$#$%^^ block!
Now it's laying in the floor where I tossed it in utter frustration a few hours ago.
My victory in this is that I resisted the urge to cut it up into cloth confetti! Yep. been there alright.

:-D

seazteddy 01-02-2011 03:09 AM

make it smaller or put plain squares on the corners, than you have some left over??

Moonglow 01-02-2011 03:15 AM

Sleep on it and the answer should come to you in the morning.

janedee 01-02-2011 03:17 AM

chances are tomorrow you will lay it out and every thing will fall into place - have a good sleep

carolaug 01-02-2011 04:37 AM

Can you make a block that is completely different...to use as your signature. Maybe a tie dye block...or a block with cats or dogs or something that would remind her of you...and you then can sign and date that block.

Becky Crafts 01-02-2011 04:46 AM

Sounds like the quilt I made my DD for Christmas! I ran out of the main color one block before the top was done. I put in another dark color (similar)& didn't say a thing! :-) That quilt fought me the whole time I was making it. One horror show after another! Never been so glad to ship one off!! LOL! Best of luck with yours!

sweet 01-02-2011 05:31 AM

How about making that last square a label?

alimaui 01-02-2011 05:44 AM

Are you using precut charms? Which line is it? Perhaps someone might have an extra pack.

clem55 01-02-2011 06:09 AM

Use a solid color for the extra block, set it in the middle and embroider or applique her initial on that one.

That was my thought. Post a picture and maybe someone can help out with some fabric. Good luck!

hlponyfarm 01-02-2011 06:22 AM

oh thank goodness Im not the only one. I often put my project away sometime for a couple days only to resolve it after rest and being away from it. I can totally understand why quilters have many projects going at the same time. LOL

Honey 01-02-2011 06:27 AM

I did one on point and thought I would tare out my hair. Put it away for a day then get a fresh look. Save your hair!!!

KarenR 01-02-2011 06:30 AM

What charm pack did you use? Maybe someone has 6 laying around.

mtnmama 01-02-2011 06:32 AM

I agree with the others about taking a break and looking at it later. I am sure most of us have had to come up with plan B and plan C. I had to do that for a quilt I made for my Grandson for Christmas. Plan B was diving into my stash and coming up with a perfect solution, only I did not have quite enough. On to Plan C...It turned out great. Be creative. Good luck.

suebee 01-02-2011 06:51 AM

Hang in there gal. Sometimes it is best to stop and go back to your project with a fresh mind.

amma 01-02-2011 09:16 AM

(((HUGS))) been there and done that

Twisted Quilter 01-02-2011 09:30 AM

Show us what you need, someone might have some extra pieces. You never know unless you ask.

isnthatodd 01-02-2011 09:34 AM

I'm with the chocolate and rest group :D I don't think we ever get enough of either one of these.

sueisallaboutquilts 01-02-2011 11:21 AM

I agree about letting us know which charm pack it is. If I had some I'd be glad to help.
Sorry for your frustration and totally understand about the dogs! My grand-dog always thinks he did something wrong when my son is yelling at the Yankees on TV !!! :D:D:D

jlong 01-02-2011 11:28 AM

Do you know the name of the charm pack? Maybe someone here has what you need.

JEM65 01-02-2011 11:53 AM

Irish maybe someone here on the board has the six charms your are missing to make another block. What pattern charm pack are they from? Let us know and maybe someone has a few to share.

Last night before I went to bed, I cut out a Friendship Star from the coral and aqua blenders I had purchased for the sashing on this quilt. My concern is that the quilt fabrics are rather curvy and the star is angular. If I need to, I can replace a square in the quilt that has a Moorish tile with one that I have leftover with a large floral. I hate taking out anything sewn on this machine, but I will if I have to. Then I will applique the curvy tile onto the center of the angular star. Could work. I wasn't home today to play with it. The star pattern was for a 12" block, I need 13 1/2", but I think I got it.

C's birthday is the 13th, so I can't put it away for a while. I can buy another Moda Fandango charm pack from any number of online retailers, but that would add to my stash. I agreed not to do that in another thread. Talk about tough resolutions! At this point I don't need anyone to raid their charm packs, though I do appreciate the offer. I will need a little more of the coral blender, but it was purchased locally.

Chocolate? I am addicted, but am fasting my chocolate until I hear that my son has arrived safely on his trip from central Michigan to SLC, Utah. He should call tonight and say he's there. Screaming? that would frighten my gentle Liliana. It might even upset impish Moira. Irish cream? Not until I am healed from my accident last week.

Thank you all for your moral suport.

Sometimes my best ideas come to me when I am asleep

jacqueck 01-03-2011 03:15 AM

Put your label in that spot. Nothing wrong with a label on the front with her name, date, "made by" you.

thseabreze 01-03-2011 04:05 AM

take a break until you get the pieces exactly the way you want them. It will come to you, just be patient..

grann of 6 01-03-2011 04:37 AM

I had a similar thing happen. I was embroidering blocks for a baby quilt with a circus theme. I got ready to assemble the squares and realized I was one block short including my signature block in the corner. I had done one design of each and didn't want to duplicate. Finally found a similar design in another collection of the right proportions and added that. In the end you couldn't tell which design was the odd one, even me. So just add one in a corner with your signature or some cute phrase that would fit the person you're gifting. No one will be the wiser.

uniquelynancy 01-03-2011 04:43 AM

This is one thing that I think happens to all of us. The opposite happened to me too. I was making a quilt without a pattern and miscalculated and ended up with several blocks extra. But not enough for another quilt.

Take a break and rethink the whole design. Maybe add different blocks every other block?
