Me too! ~:D

rush88888 09-28-2012 05:36 PM

of course i buy fabric just because...it's pretty! i figure that one day when i am ready to use it, i could find some coordinating fabric to go with it. or, i could make a market bag by using two coordinating fat quarters.

Grandma of 6 09-28-2012 06:22 PM

I am very much into collections of lines so I tend to buy a yard of each. I'm not good at picking out coordinating fabric so I let the designers do it for me. Sometimes I get so overwhelmed at all I have that it's just easier to buy kits so I have everything (including pattern) I need.

Twisted Quilter 09-28-2012 06:28 PM

If the price is right, I buy!

Dolphyngyrl 09-28-2012 07:09 PM

Once in a blue moon, I only have about 3-4 just because fabrics, the rest are for specific projects

Monroe 09-28-2012 08:01 PM

Guilty! I started liking I Spy quilts and collecting interesting FQ's. Then I joined some swaps, and needed a yard of each, and why not get an extra 1/2 to allow for shrinkage and cutting errors. Then $ was pretty tight, so I'd buy a few yards to stock up whenever there was a Really good clearance sale. Good thing I like scrappy quilts! i was never able to find something when I needed to, which led to the stocking up. Now fabrics are available online if my LQS doesn't have them so while I may occasionally buy some focus fabric I don't feel I need to get coordinates. Besides- I can just shop the stash!

teacherbailey 09-29-2012 02:49 AM

I'm mostly a scrappy quilter so I usually buy one yard pieces....and then scraps of it show up in most every quilt for YEARS!

Or until I get so tired of seeing it that I pass it on to someone else:D

hikingquilter 09-29-2012 03:51 AM

Guilty! and proud of it!

Steady Stiching 09-29-2012 04:43 AM

When I first started quilting I did just that and now have oodells of focal fabric and precious little blenders.
I'm now on a strickt blenders or solids only diet.

SueDor 09-29-2012 05:50 AM

Yes when it is on sale or I have a coupon. Lately though if I find fabric thjat I like I also get another piece that matches.

EmiliasNana 09-29-2012 06:20 AM

Absolutely! All the time.

QandE2010 09-29-2012 06:31 AM

I'd like to say, "absolutely not." But I would be lying. I will say that 80% of my stash was purchased for a specific project in mind.
Justamom410, I love the middle diagonal stripe fabrics. Also the butterflies. Can I come shop in your stash?

Amythyst02 09-29-2012 07:05 AM

Yup, if I find fabric that I love and just can't live without, its going in my cart. I figure something out for it later.

Sewnoma 09-29-2012 07:49 AM

Hah, ALL the time.

The girls at Joann's often ask me what I'm working on...most of the time my answer is, "Not sure yet! The fabric will tell me what it wants to be later, after it's met all its new siblings."

I like having a big enough stash that, when I get an idea, I have at least half of what I need on hand. Then I love shopping for the other half! LOL

meanmom 09-29-2012 08:01 AM

Most of the fabric I have is just because it spoke to me. That is why I have pretty much banned myself from all fabric stores. My stash has gotten out of control. I have made my last 4 quilts almost completely from my stash. This includes the backs. I have been piecing my backs. I try to use the scraps of fabric from the quilt then add stuff from my stash. I did get a ton of fabric from yard sales, but still there is too much.

Had to add this: I have a Room FULL of Fabrics Bought Just this Way! and It working The way out the Door at this very Minute! LoL

Sallyflymi 09-29-2012 08:28 AM

Just bought 14 yards of the stuff. 4 yards for a project and the other 10 will find a use for. My bad.

psailer 09-29-2012 08:29 AM

i think all quilters are guilty of it.. hence the stash.... which never seems to get used except just a bit in a few pieces but we have lots to pick from...lol... and then another sale and here we go again...lol....

MimiBug123 09-29-2012 08:46 AM

I can't find fabric if I'm looking for a specific one, but if I'm not, I find tons. I guess that's how I happened to have 6 shelving units crammed full from top to bottom. Oh, I love to look at it. I have it arranged by color and it's my piece of "art" in my sewing room!

Dix 09-29-2012 09:21 AM

I limit my fabric to buying only when I am in a quilt shoppe!!!!!!

brendapm 09-29-2012 10:03 AM

I'm pretty good about buying only what I need for a specific project. I learned that things I buy on impulse didn't get used. If I have no idea for a project for the fabric I don't buy it no matter how much I like it. I like to use collections that designers have put together. Designers come up with new collections every season. I know I will always find something I like. I never put myself on a schedule for a quilt, so I can wait till I find exactly what I want. I used 2 LQSs and 2 or 3 online quilt shops, Like Keepsake Quilting and Norton.

SouthPStitches 09-29-2012 10:20 AM

I have three huge totes of "just because" or "screaming sale" fabrics.

huntannette 09-29-2012 10:31 AM

yep...all the time.....and eventually it speaks to me and let`s me know what to do with it...lol isn`t it just fun!!!

mrs. fitz 09-29-2012 11:52 AM

Thanks CoyoteMagic for my laugh for the day (on page one of this thread). At first I thought you were serious and I thought "how sad". Absolutely I buy something if I love it and someday it might actually get used. One of my problems, I like it so much I don't want to use it because then I won't have it any more. Anyone else do that?

mhollifiel 09-29-2012 12:10 PM

There must be other "Major League" fabric buyers lurking here besides me. You sandlot folks have to step up. We travel, often hundreds and even thousands of miles to add to my stash. We have been making 3-4 major trips a year and a then some less than a week trips in between. Any expenses on these trips always include various fab fabric shopping destinations. I have even had to mail large packages of fabrics home on extended trips. My favorite so far? Marden's in Maine!
If we're not traveling, I am piecing tops and making room for more stash additions! Love my life!

lillybeck 09-29-2012 12:43 PM

When I can afford it I sure do.

krisgray 09-29-2012 01:03 PM

My LQS had her annual "clearing out" sale. It's a really small shop and when she cleans out there are great deals to be had I've not had a chance to total up all the yardage yet.

huntersgrammie 09-29-2012 01:03 PM

90% of the fabric i have is bought with no project planned but with good intentions lol then i pick out a pattern and buy more to go with it.

Carol34446 09-29-2012 01:22 PM

Oh yes, I have plastic storage containers with fabric, if I made 30 big qults I might start to run out.

gramquilter2 09-29-2012 03:13 PM

YES, I thought all quilters bought fabric just because!

Funny...the middle diagonal stripe is one I saw on the clearance pile. Then I remembered seeing the other 2 stripe colors on the floor and thought, wow, those would look awesome with black sashing! So I went back for the other 2 colors...even though they weren't clearance (but they were on sale!). The butterflies I bought intending them for a project, but then replaced them with something else!

My husband is unemployed right now...so I have to limit my spending on fabric. I got to enjoy this "spree" because I sold some of my daughter's too small clothes at a local consignment sale. I could be very dangerous in a LQS...which is why I stick to Joanns.

QM 09-29-2012 03:27 PM

In July my LQS closed (both wonderful owners have degenerative dieases!) With the final prices 40% off, YES I bought a lot of fabric "just because". In fact, most of the fabric I buy is for that reason. If you like it, it won't be there next time. I have a large stash. I can start a quilt at a moment's notice from what's on hand, which is very good because my closest fabric store is a 150 mile round trip.

cathyvv 09-29-2012 03:40 PM

Not me, nope. Wouldn't do that. I buy them 'just in case'. You never know, right?

bobquilt3 09-29-2012 03:44 PM

I sometimes buy apiece that is " just too pretty" to leave in the store. I have no idea what I'll make with it but I just have to take a yard of it home with me.

katesnanna 09-29-2012 05:11 PM

Welcome to the fabriholics club. You have an addiction there is no cure but it's heaps of fun. Welcome to QB too.

Quilter 65 09-29-2012 05:45 PM

It has been my experience that if you really, really like something, get it because you will always like it. Then inspiration will strike when you least expect it and you have the stuff to go after it.
