Do you buy fabric "just because"

I went to Joann's last night to get the fabric to make my daughter's quilt (my 3rd project). They were having a sale on the Keepsake Calico fabrics and I had a 20% off total purchase coupon. So I purchased some fabrics that "spoke" to me. I have no projects in mind for them at this point.

I'm wondering...does anyone else buy fabrics just because you like them?

I wish I could post pictures...but it keeps telling me my photo size is too large.

Dingle 09-28-2012 09:05 AM

Yep. Most of my fabric I have is just because I liked it. Just bought 8 yards from Hancock's at 50% off. Have no idea what I'm going to do with it! :O)

Mariposa 09-28-2012 09:06 AM

Yep! I do! I used to buy more, but have had to scale back! Scrappy quilts here I come!

Deborahlees 09-28-2012 09:09 AM

Of course, that is how a stash is born......

BellaBoo 09-28-2012 09:11 AM

Certainly! It's no fun not to buy fabric when you want it.

RonieM 09-28-2012 09:22 AM

You bet! I love picking up something just because I like it. Eventually it will find it's way into the right project.

COYOTEMAGIC 09-28-2012 09:24 AM

No. Why would I do such a thing?! All my fabric is for a specific purpose. Each quilt is planned out to the last stitch.

If you believe that, I've got some waterfront property for you in Arizona!! :D

dottie dodge 09-28-2012 09:33 AM

Yes, I do too. I used to buy in half yard lengths, then I went to one yard cuts, now I do five yard cuts when I find a really good sale. I use these for backings as I have way too may half yard cuts. LOL Now most fabric stores won't cut less than one yard of sale fabric. I have run out of closet space and under the bed so I have put myself on a no buy until I have room.:( I have some empty spots that are just begging to be filled! LOL

Raggiemom 09-28-2012 09:33 AM

I bought 3 yards each of 3 different fabrics just last week just because!

Pat625 09-28-2012 09:37 AM

Most of my fabric is Just Because!! I buy what I like...I just ordered all 3 daily deal fabrics from Beverlys this morning...what for I don't know---Just because..

barny 09-28-2012 09:41 AM

Ha Coyote, you're a hoot! I like to buy fabric, and sewing machines.

Neesie 09-28-2012 09:45 AM

Yes! :o Of course, I always intend to make "something" of it!

quiltstringz 09-28-2012 09:50 AM

I doubt very much if you will find many people on here although there are probably a few (how I envy them) that are able to only buy fabric when they are starting a new project or to complete a project

Krisb 09-28-2012 09:50 AM

This is a rhetorical question, right? Of course.

GailG 09-28-2012 09:52 AM

Yea! Of course! I buy it "just because" I like it, or just because my stash "needs" more of that color, or because I like butterflies, or "while I'm here and they may be out the next time I'm in here." And the good reasons just keep going and going.

Lori S 09-28-2012 10:05 AM

I did not know there was any other way!

Me too. Can't resist.

LadyElisabeth 09-28-2012 10:24 AM

When they call our names, we can't just leave the fabric in the store.

pinkcastle 09-28-2012 10:25 AM

Of course! I'll buy something I like and then start looking out for coordinating fabrics. And therefore another project is born! Just add it to the ever growing list. :)

PaperPrincess 09-28-2012 10:46 AM

I feel that it is my civic duty to purchase fabric whenever I pass a LQS. I want to keep them all in business. It's purely an altruistic action on my part. Nothing to do with a fabric purchasing compulsion. I can stop any time I want.

0tis 09-28-2012 10:48 AM

Are you kidding - absolutely - I have lots of fabric that i just love - sometimes its hard to cut into it or find just the right pattern.

SewExtremeSeams 09-28-2012 11:04 AM

Of course!

Quiltaddict 09-28-2012 11:26 AM

I have a whole room full of "just because"

joyce888 09-28-2012 11:30 AM

Yep, every time I walk into a fabric store. If you have Microsoft, use the "paint" tab and resize your pics to 30 and save as a jpeg file.

nygal 09-28-2012 11:46 AM

Yes, a lot of my fabric stash is "just because".

auntpiggylpn 09-28-2012 11:47 AM

Guilty as charged!!!!;)

lynnie 09-28-2012 11:50 AM

Yes all the time, 99% of my fabric is purchased that way

Justamom410 09-28-2012 11:52 AM

I bought 2 half yard cuts of princess fabric (intended for a project)
one yard cuts of 6 different fabrics
one 2 yard cut of a flannel (intended for same project as above)
and a 3 1/2 yard cut of plain black fabric.

My husband was like "what are you going to do with all that?" I had no answer.

Thanks for the tip on resizing pics! I forgot to mention that I also bought 8 fat quarters!
These are all intended for a quilt for my daughter.

Like Lynnie, about 99% of my fabric is "just because"...I rarely buy specific fabric for a specific thing...

PenniF 09-28-2012 12:16 PM

Never !!! .....ok sometimes.......then again, occassionally .... well, maybe frequently......... OK OK OK !!!! .....EVERY SINGLE TIME I GO INTO JoAnn's !!!!!!!!!!!!! :o

quiltsRfun 09-28-2012 12:24 PM

Yes, I do. There have been a few time's I've been sorry I didn't buy the fabric that spoke to me.

topstitch 09-28-2012 12:41 PM

Sometimes I buy fabric that only whispers to me.

I thought that was the only reason why you bought fabric:D

When I have a project in mind I go through my stash picking out pieces, audition them, put them back and then go buy the necessary pieces that I am missing - which sometimes can be most of them. LOL

That is another excuse to buy fabric.

Not often, but I do have "just because" fabrics in my stash. One piece may NEVER become anything but my "pet"!

Yep, the cupcake material at JoAnn's a couple years ago!

Love them all (except Barbie!)

Jingle 09-28-2012 01:28 PM

WOW, those are very pretty colors.

I buy fabrics hoping I have some to go with it and I usually can find something too. with all the fabrics I have I only need to live to 200-300 yo and be able to quilt.

IAmCatOwned 09-28-2012 01:42 PM

Yes, unfortunately, most of my fabric is purchased because I like it, not because I have a plan for it.

It was very sad. Due to remodeling, I had to bring ALL but one box of fabric to my storage unit. I have too much fabric. My sewing space is moved temporarily to my bedroom now, so space is really tight. I really, really need to use up/sell/give away at least half my collection of fabric in the next year. In the meantime, for the winter, at least, I will just be doing the 'kits' that I have already assembled. In the Spring, I'll take out all my fabric and really take a hard look at what I will use and what I won't use. I've had several requests for lap sized quilts (design my choice), but then they always want flannel backing (which I have to buy).

YEP and I'm proud of it.
