I do cut the selvage off and save it to make ties for bags! I make bags for my quilts and put two long pieces of the selvages together and use my serger to sew them together and they make great ties for my bags.

I do trim mine off as it shows thru edges....but I save them for future projects. I'm trying to collect enough to make something with them eventually.

I have been saving selvages for a few years now, planning to make a log cabin quilt with them, the selvage scrap basket is quite full so my next project is going to use them up. I try to keep a little of the color with the fabric and I just tear it off. This past summer I also used some of the less attractive selvage pieces to tie up my tomato plants and they worked beautifully. Waste not, want not!

Back in the days of garment sewing, I discovered selvages were great for stabilizing shoulder seams and neck edges.
Tying up tomato plants sounds like a very good use.

My stash is older fabric, no longer in production, no need to save the selvage for ID. Besides, when I run out, I like the challenge to find a new solution that increases the design of the project.

Only in the last 4-5 years have I been saving them again. They've added up quick. Maybe they'd make a great tote cover for my machine. Then just get a folding hand cart. Solves 2 challenges.

What projects have you seen made from them?

It is a quilt made to look like a bookcase. Some folks use the selvages on the end of the books. Here is a picture of the bookcase quilt I made--this is an in progress photo, it is still a UFO after 2 years!! I didn't use selvages, but bought fabric with writing on it and used it on some of the books. I need to get this out and finish it up I guess.

I don't take it off until I cut my pieces.
