I make a large number of Linus quilts. I like to back them with flannel. JoAnns usually has their bolts of flannel on sale the day after Thanksgiving. I always stock up. I probably have at least three or four of them in my stash right now. I also use their coupons to buy the rolls of batting that I use for the Linus quilts.

Yes, the occasional bolt. Almost always a version of muslin (for curtains, muslins [clothes patterns], backings, etc.) Forgive me, but I buy the quality I am looking for where I can get the best price. My dad used to make a bolt of muslin my Christmas present. (My husband gets the occasional kick out of going into JoAnn's and investing in that occasion's collection of (usually esoteric) sewing machine needles for me. (I think he gets a kick out of being seen looking terribly knowledgable looking through the machine needle wall. Oops, off subject. Sorry.))
It's finally getting warm here, thank heaven. Haven't seen my fat, dimply knees in Bermudas for too long. Phooey on good taste! Yeah, summer! May we all enjoy it to the hilt! (Just re-read this. Scatty today. See what happens with a good night's sleep? Oh dear. Fingers off keys - NOW! Apologies.) Pat |
Watch out for yardage differences. A standard bolt measures 15 yards, but many of the bolts at JoAnn's and other places are only 10 yards. Be sure you are comparing 'per yard' cost in your search. I buy Kona solids by the bolt (15 yd) from Hancock's of Paducah.

Fabric Depot allows 40% off of bolts.

A careful note about JoAnn's when buying the bolt. Make certain to tell the person measuring that you want to use a Coupon so she/he doesn't discount it for you buying the entire bolt. I had this happen when buying the end of a bolt on a batik. I ended up leaving it there. I wanted to use my 50% off and she had discounted like 10% because I bought the rest of it. No way was I purchasing it at 10%.

I use to buy bolts directly from P&B and Hoffman when I was doing professional quilting, but you need a resale number from your state and have a business in order to purchase at wholesale rates.

How do you indicate that you want to purchase a bolt?

Found a wonderful turkey red on line and bought a bolt. Also buy muslin by the bolt with 50% off coupon at Jo-anns.
