do you guys ever purchase bolts of fabric?

I am looking to start a new project that will need a lot fabric.. but pretty much all the same fabric. Does anyone here know the best place to buy bolts of fabric? Free shipping would be awesome Thank you!

I buy bolts from Marshall's Dry Goods Wholesale. You can buy a bolt at wholesale prices.
http://www.marshalldrygoods.com/ On the top right click on Wholesale site.

luvstoquilt 05-03-2014 10:40 AM

I buy Moda white or black when Joann's has a 50% off coupon.

mpspeedy2 05-03-2014 10:48 AM

I make a large number of Linus quilts. I like to back them with flannel. JoAnns usually has their bolts of flannel on sale the day after Thanksgiving. I always stock up. I probably have at least three or four of them in my stash right now. I also use their coupons to buy the rolls of batting that I use for the Linus quilts.

i am doing a red and white dear jane, so i bought a bolt of red and a bolt of cream muslin.

Sisty88 05-03-2014 11:24 AM

I would love to buy material by the bolt, but can't find anywhere good to do so in the UK! I did buy a bolt of wadding and am so glad it did, made it a lot cheaper than my local shop!

meyert 05-03-2014 11:50 AM

Thank you! I will check these places out

I also purchased a bolt of cream muslin for my Dear Jane from my LQS ...as it is taking a while to complete and I wanted it to match front and back. :)

My MIL does. She loves white on white :-)

Both Hancocks of Paducah ( www.hancocks-paducah.com ) and The Fat Quarter Shop give discounts when you buy fabric by the bolt. I have 4 bolts of Kona on hand at all times (black, white, snow & natural.)

Dina 05-03-2014 01:02 PM

My sister has discovered this site, and it might work for you. You have to give them your email address before you can see the prices of the fabric, but we have both done that and there hasn't even been one email or ad from them. (I was expecting lots of stuff. Glad I was wrong. Quite often I regret "joining.")

I believe they sell only by the bolt. I haven't bought anything yet, but my sister and I are going to split a bolt or two when we decide what we want. A lot of the fabric is $3. or $4. a yard...

I make a lot of baby quilts and I always buy bolts of the yellow, blue, pink and bolts of muslin.

Terri D. 05-03-2014 01:36 PM

I did a long time ago. I found a Moda solid white that I liked and asked the shop owner to order another bolt--just for me! It's great not to have to run out for a much-used neutral like that.

nanacc 05-03-2014 02:57 PM

My friend and I bought fabric at JoAnn's yesterday at 50% off. We found that some of the ones that had older manufacture dates(usually on end of bolt info) were of better quality. She bought the good ones that she liked by the bolt.......I am more conservative and still could not pass up some yardage(I needed it sooo bad;))!! Also got some rulers with 50% coupon.

PenniF 05-03-2014 04:32 PM

I usually buy 108" backing cotton by the bolt when i have a 40 or 50% off coupon.

luvTooQuilt 05-03-2014 06:35 PM

Yes... I mainly buy the bolt or whats left on the bolt, especially if its a neutral.. ... I use to buy pieces but i never know what im going to use the fabric for so I wouldn't know how much I would need so it was convenient to just buy the whole bolt....

craftyheart2 05-04-2014 02:06 AM

My LQS closed down so I purchased a bolt of plain red I use for charity quilts, and a bolt each of extra wide muslin in cream and black. I have never used plain backs before but for my last two quilts one I used the extra wide black and this current one I am using the cream. I am on my 2nd or 3rd bolt of the plain red.

I went to the wholesale section but no prices came up. How do you find that out? The retail side shows the prices. They are wonderful. What is the fabric like? Is it nice quality?

Retiredandquilting 05-04-2014 03:12 AM

I recently purchased a bolt of bleached, unbleached and tea stained muslin at Joann's when it is 50% off and free shipping.

Teacup 05-04-2014 03:52 AM

Here's a recent QB discussion about Marshalls...has a lot of information.

What type of batting do you use for Linus quilts? I make a lot of quilts for charity for kids.

w1613s 05-04-2014 05:37 AM

Yes, the occasional bolt. Almost always a version of muslin (for curtains, muslins [clothes patterns], backings, etc.) Forgive me, but I buy the quality I am looking for where I can get the best price. My dad used to make a bolt of muslin my Christmas present. (My husband gets the occasional kick out of going into JoAnn's and investing in that occasion's collection of (usually esoteric) sewing machine needles for me. (I think he gets a kick out of being seen looking terribly knowledgable looking through the machine needle wall. Oops, off subject. Sorry.))

It's finally getting warm here, thank heaven. Haven't seen my fat, dimply knees in Bermudas for too long. Phooey on good taste! Yeah, summer! May we all enjoy it to the hilt! (Just re-read this. Scatty today. See what happens with a good night's sleep? Oh dear. Fingers off keys - NOW! Apologies.)

Watch out for yardage differences. A standard bolt measures 15 yards, but many of the bolts at JoAnn's and other places are only 10 yards. Be sure you are comparing 'per yard' cost in your search. I buy Kona solids by the bolt (15 yd) from Hancock's of Paducah.

sweet 05-04-2014 05:49 AM

Fabric Depot allows 40% off of bolts.

toverly 05-04-2014 05:52 AM

A careful note about JoAnn's when buying the bolt. Make certain to tell the person measuring that you want to use a Coupon so she/he doesn't discount it for you buying the entire bolt. I had this happen when buying the end of a bolt on a batik. I ended up leaving it there. I wanted to use my 50% off and she had discounted like 10% because I bought the rest of it. No way was I purchasing it at 10%.

ManiacQuilter2 05-04-2014 07:46 AM

I use to buy bolts directly from P&B and Hoffman when I was doing professional quilting, but you need a resale number from your state and have a business in order to purchase at wholesale rates.

sparkys_mom 05-04-2014 08:03 AM

How do you indicate that you want to purchase a bolt?

trolleystation 05-04-2014 08:21 AM

Found a wonderful turkey red on line and bought a bolt. Also buy muslin by the bolt with 50% off coupon at Jo-anns.

Onebyone 05-04-2014 08:42 AM

I never had a problem ordering wholesale without a tax number. I just call and ask.

Kitsie 05-04-2014 08:47 AM

Not yet! Beyond my budget, but would like to buy the really good muslin that I like and use so much! For other fabrics, finding new ones is really fun, so I don't want bolts. That's just me; others buy by the bolt a lot. ;)

justflyingin 05-04-2014 08:54 AM

Actually only twice that I can remember. one time I bought a white on white at Joann's. I think it was about 13 yards. I had a coupon for 50% off I think. I've used it up. :( Sad. It was a nice color and I often wish I had more.

Then, the second time was more recently. I asked the local fabric shop to get me a whole bolt of their nice black cotton. The bolt was 30 meters!

WMUTeach 05-04-2014 12:23 PM

I do buy bolts but only of Muslin for backing. ------JoAnn's

quilterpurpledog 05-04-2014 06:35 PM

I have done it several times when I find a great 'almost white' and I have gotten two or three Fossil Fern neutrals that make great blenders. Sometimes these things wind up in several quilts. Then, sometimes I have purchased a bolt to use as backing on a quilt or two. I like to do that with things I know I will use fairly quickly. I also have one on the shelf to make a new dust ruffle for the bed-some of these days.

efa 05-04-2014 06:43 PM

QuitnNan, When you back your quilts with flannel is it hard to do? Does flannel stretch? Do you put batting in the quilt? I am doing a whirly gig baby quilt and was thinking of putting flannel on the back. Can I stitch in the ditch? I have never sew flannel before.

Call one of the reps listed on the page. Ask for the brand name fabric you want. A lot of the fabric is listed on the left side of the site page. What I do is find the fabric info I like then call Marshall's and order the bolt.

jaly3162 05-05-2014 12:43 AM

I will buy white, black and muslin by the bolt and lots of yardage from Connecting Threads when they have it really marked down low to use as backing.

Maureen 05-05-2014 03:40 AM

I bought three full bolts in Lancaster last year. White on white, red print and brown print. I have used quite a bit of all of them. Well worth the price.

lizzy 05-05-2014 03:52 AM

I used Hobby Lobby's 40 % off coupon to buy a bolt of Moda Black. The catch is that you buy it when it is not on sale. I really have enjoyed having that amount of black fabric that is a consistent black color.
