Do you keep the box?

I bought a new machine last fall and I kept the box. I would love to pitch it....it takes up too much room to save. My dealer is local. Anyone keep your boxes??

If i moved, it would get transported in my car Not shipped.

When I bought my Janome 6600, my dealer said they would give me a full value trade in within 6 months but only if I had the box. I kept the box, even though I loved my machine. Once it was past the time I pitched the box. I have a tendency to keep boxes only until I am sure I want to keep it. We used to keep them forever - but decided they were just a fire hazard and have gotten rid of them since.

quilter2090 05-25-2014 02:51 PM

If you want to pitch it, pitch it. As far as me, I do keep my box that the machine came in. I have the room to save it, so if I ever decide to sell it, I can ship it in the box it came in with the styrofoam inserts that fit it.

tennesseesews 05-25-2014 02:52 PM

I have learned to keep the boxes! I have a Babylock Ellisimo which is a large machine. When my dealer was servicing it; the automatic needle threader was broken and had to be sent to Babylock to be repaired. If the dealer had not saved the boxes; there would have been a $75.00 charge for new boxes to send my machine back for the needed repairs.

serenitybygrace 05-25-2014 02:52 PM

I have kept the box one of my machines came in because it has styrofoam fitted to the machine. I always pack it in the box to transport it. I have another machine that I purchased from someone through Craigslist, I don't have a box for it. I am sure you will get better answers from others on this board.

We tend to keep boxes. I rather wish we didn't, but my husband's theory is "Ya never know."

We had 5 years of boxes in the garage until last weekend! Now we have -0-. It became clutter...I hate the thot of having to ship a machine or pay extra but....fingers crossed!

faykilgore 05-25-2014 04:17 PM

I kept the box. What was funny was when I did move, I'd forgotten all the accessories had special places also. I'd already packed all of them in a regular box so that all that ended up in the packing box was the machine itself. That was the most important part, so it was ok. I had an attic above the garage for that type of thing. Not sure I'll have room for it where I'm going.

Jeanne S 05-25-2014 04:21 PM

I still have my Juki box--got the machine a year ago. Not sure why, but have kept it in the garage.

bearisgray 05-25-2014 04:31 PM

I would keep it. One can always put something else IN the box so it isn't just taking up space.

Doggramma 05-25-2014 04:37 PM

I always keep the boxes too. But we have room down in the basement. And I did use the sewing machine box when I took it in for service.

QuiltnNan 05-25-2014 04:40 PM

i keep my boxes as long as i have the room. i'm moving to a very small place, so that will probably stop.

Lori S 05-25-2014 05:54 PM

I tossed mine and then the local dealer closed .. so now if I have to have a serious repair ... not sure how well I would get it packaged up to ship. If you have room... keep it.

kathdavis 05-25-2014 06:18 PM

Keep the box and just pack other things in it when you move. At least you will have the box if you need it.

cathyre 05-25-2014 06:26 PM

My box went to a very good cause , I had hung on to it for years and never used it , then my son (Bernina Tech) ask if still had it , they had had a request from lady moving to America from Australia and thought her machine would travel better in a box , so my box is somewhere in the USA it has had a good trip around the world .

My newer machines are all out of warranty. So I'll never ship one for repair. So out went the boxes.

I kept mine also, because a friend had this same experience. The dealer had to send the machine to the manufacturer and she was forced to purchase a new box.

I keep mine in the attic.

sewbizgirl 05-25-2014 06:33 PM

I always keep the box.

Skittl1321 05-25-2014 08:06 PM

I kept my walmart machine in its box. My bernina I threw the box away. For one, the machine stays out all the time. Secondly, the box is like 3x the size of the Walmart machine.

Dolphyngyrl 05-25-2014 08:50 PM

I would keep as long as your machine is in warranty because if you have to ship it back for warranty service for whatever reason you will need the box, once out of warranty I would chuck. You just never know. I had to put my machine in storage for a little bit, was very glad I had the box for moving and storage, much easier and more protection

Auntie V 05-26-2014 12:15 AM

I am so thankful that my Mom kept her boxes. When I cleaned out her sewing room I was able to pack up all 4 machines in the original boxes.

Sandygirl 05-26-2014 02:28 AM

Good points...all of them! I put a table cloth over it and it is now a table, LOL !

I keep the boxes. When I bought my Sweet 16 they told me to in case I had to ship it back. I think it has a 10 year warranty. When I bought a new embroidery machine I kept the box. It malfunctioned and I ended up sending it back for a new one. Was glad I did.

GingerK 05-26-2014 03:59 AM

I kept the box for my Janome Jem because they said it was easier and safer to take on a plane that way. It fits into my carry-on and I don't worry as much when putting it in the overhead bin.

scrapinmema 05-26-2014 04:14 AM

I keep my boxes for my sewing machines and computers. You never know when you will need them. Have a shelf up high in the garage that they all fit on. Never know when they will be needed.

romanojg 05-26-2014 04:28 AM

I have top of the line and was told to keep my box. My dealer is also local and have onsite repairs but they said if I ever had to send it in it would be safer in the orginal box with the packing. When I traded my machine in for the latest a yr later it was good for the store to have it in the box for the new owner. They always make sure that all machines (even used ones) have all of the items shown in the book. When I turned mine in, I had every item that came with it and got a great price towards my new one.

ManiacQuilter2 05-26-2014 05:23 AM

Wish I had kept the box for my serger. Couldn't find a box for it to fit in.

Onebyone 05-26-2014 08:46 AM

Any store that ships frozen foods will have all sizes of foam insulated boxes. They work great for packing electronics, breakables and machines from portable to large. Fill up the space around the item with foam peanuts or bubble wrap. We used many of the foam lined boxes when my DD moved, not one item was damaged.

caspharm 05-26-2014 02:43 PM

After reading all these comments and I do have the room, I am going to keep my Janome box. I don't expect any problems, but you never know.

I had a Designer 1 a few years ago and had gotten rid of the box because our condo was small. The problem was I later sold it to someone out of state and ended up paying $150 for shipping by UPS, because I had UPS pack it.

Mdaniels 05-26-2014 02:58 PM

We tend to keep boxes for large item purchases and I do have the box for my Janome that I bought a few months ago. We store it in the attic or up in the hayloft of the barn.

jlm5419 05-26-2014 03:32 PM

I kept the box from my embroidery/sewing machine, and am really glad I did. Recently when I was having trouble with the machine, I was told I'd have to mail it to Utah for service. As it turned out, my DH fixed the problem with the machine. If at all possible I recommend keeping the box. You never know, you may decide to move someday and the box will come in handy.

lynnie 05-26-2014 05:35 PM

I was talked into keeping it in case i needed to ship back to the manufacturer. the box, they say is $25.00
I have 3 boxes in my attic right now

SittingPretty 05-26-2014 06:30 PM

I used to move around a lot, and could never throw out a box - "might need it for moving." Now, I keep a few and pitch the rest. Too much clutter. Usually, my husband and I go thru them once and year and start purging. Can't say I've ever missed one I tossed.

lclang 05-27-2014 03:33 AM

If there is any chance at all that you might have to ship for repairs (or any other reason), keep the box. These are sturdy boxes with lots of Styrofoam padding and they will protect your machine. If you have to pay to have it properly boxed for shipment it will cost you an arm and a leg.

Kathryn Garcia 05-27-2014 03:42 AM

It is so easy these days just to go to a shipping shop and buy a box if needed.

solstice3 05-27-2014 04:38 AM

mine is out of sight in the attic. If you have a place, store it.. or you can decorate it and store fabric in it :-)

katesnanna 05-27-2014 05:15 AM

I have boxes for the last three Janomes I bought. Think I'll get an extra shelf put up in the garage as they have gotten bigger with each new machine.
Thanks scrapinmema.

SusanSusan33 05-27-2014 06:03 AM

Funny topic because I was just looking at the BIG box for my Janome 6600 came in. It takes up a good bit of space in my garage. I only bought it in Novomeber so I think I'll pack it up in the attic. Better safe than sorry...

Marysewfun 05-27-2014 06:19 AM

If usually keep most boxes until I am satisfied it works okay, etc. If it is a good sturdy box, I will use it to store other stuff in, otherwise I will cut off the panels that have sale or shipping info on them (like Amazon, Walmart) or special info about the machine and toss (recycle the rest). Otherwise we would need another house just for boxes and has been said, they can become a fire hazard. :-)

Belfrybat 05-27-2014 06:28 AM

I'm with Mdaniels and Marysewfun -- I only keep boxes for high-end purchases. So I have the Janome 8900 and Brother 1500 boxes, but I tossed the box for the Brother cs6000 after 3 months. The same with the new printer I purchased a few months ago -- the box is now gone.
