I try to keep a photograph of any of my craft, particularly as I give so much of it away and I like to look back to see what I gave to who. Don't want to double up. I even impress myself when I see the amount of work I have turned out. Another one of my hobbies is dollhouse and miniature making and I have even done one of those e-albums and I can pull that off the shelf to show people. One day I might even do that with my quilts.

sharon b 06-17-2010 03:13 PM

Sadly , no I have given a lot away and never thought to take pics

Jim's Gem 06-17-2010 03:28 PM

I try to take a picture of each quilt before it goes out the door. Of course my first quilts are on regular film and I don't know where those pictures are. Also I occasionally forget. I gave a quilt as a baby gift last week and totally forgot to take a picture of it!!!

earlylace 06-17-2010 03:46 PM

Someone told me when I first started making a quilt in Nov. 2009 to remember to take pictures and her other tip was always sign your quilts. I have followed her advise, glad she told me to do it. Lace

Yes, when I started quilting 4 years ago I decided to take pictures of all the quilts I have done, and put them into a notebook with information on when, for whom, etc. My grandaughter loves to take the notebook down and look through it.

Angellight 06-17-2010 04:01 PM

I have done various crafts for years. It is only in the last few years that we as crafters have been encouraged to make a "portfolio" of our work. I am getting better about taking a photo of the things I have made with OR without the recipient, especially of my quilting.

Happy Quilting,
Susan

newbee 06-17-2010 04:53 PM

I take pictures of the front and back and some close-ups of the blocks. I have a scrabbook for my quilts, and I put all sorts of things with the pictures--funny sayings related to the quilt theme, pieces of the material, pictures of the people I gave the quilt to with the quilt (like babies on their quilts), and a journalling of my general impression the quilt and my rememberances of making it. I have given away all of my quilts, so this is the best way for me to remember tham.

MadQuilter 06-17-2010 05:02 PM

I take pictures now that I am playing on the QB. Did not take pics of all of my quilts though.

Kathy N 06-17-2010 05:06 PM

I take photos and keep a journal of all that I make. If I give a gift I try to get a photo with the recipient with their quilt.
Someday when I can't quilt anymore I will still have the wonderful memories!

roseOfsharon 06-17-2010 05:09 PM

Yes, everything that I have made thus far, I have taken a picture of. I have given most everything away and enjoy having a copy (picture) of what I have made. Plan on making a book up soon!

CAROLJ 06-17-2010 05:31 PM

Gave most everything away and didn't think about taking pictures or signing and dating my work.

Boston1954 06-17-2010 05:37 PM

I have taken a picture (and many times, several) of EVERY quilt I have ever made. I did not do that with my cross stitch until recently, so a few did get away. I also have a list of who they were made for, and some pictures of the people enjoying their presents. My mother used to take pictures of some of her work and I got the idea from her.

I keep all the pictures and the information in a flash drive that goes everyplace with me. If my house ever burns down while I am away, I will still have that.

Beachbound 06-17-2010 05:50 PM

I try to. My early ones are on film & in an album, the recent ones are just on my computer, I am sooo bad about getting things printed. I do ask moms to take a picture of my baby quilt gifts with the baby on the quilt. It's pretty great when they remember to do it!

debbieumphress 06-17-2010 05:50 PM

I take pictures of all my quilts and put them in a binder with leftover scraps in case I need them to repair later. I also take pics and keep track of the quilts I repair for people or quilt for others too. Write down name of patter, fabric used, etc. I use it to show people if they want to see what kind of work I do. And I like to look back myself. Compare then and now...LOL

QuiltingGrannie 06-17-2010 05:52 PM

I take photos of all my quilting work, my crafts, and keep them in a 3 ring binder which I take with me from time to time to "show and tell" others.

Kitsie 06-17-2010 06:11 PM

I started a "journal" when I got into quilting, kind of a blog to myself with pictures inserted where wanted. Stopped doing it for some reason, but now do a journal for each quilt with pictures. Also have quilt pictures in their own folders that pretty much follow the progress on each one.

stitchinwitch 06-17-2010 06:12 PM

I DID - on the computer - then it CRASHED - all gone now

brushandthimble 06-17-2010 06:13 PM

Sadly I have not. I get one now and then, and am try to get better.

woody1229 06-17-2010 06:24 PM

I have taken photos of almost all of my quilts and other projects - except for two that I made for girlfriends going through cancer treatments. I miss these quilts and want to take pix of them with their owners!

Oh, the pain!! So sorry! Reminds me I must copy to a DVD right now!

lab fairy 06-17-2010 08:12 PM

I'm keeping a record. Right now I go back and look at those first few blocks that I donated to a group for children's quilts a few months ago and realize, wow, I made some bad choices for a first time quilter. Who'd have guessed squares and triangles can be so hard?

I use the pictures as a learning experience as well as a record of work. I don't want to forget some of those lessons.

spinnergs 06-17-2010 08:43 PM

I started a "Work list" about ten years ago and kept a record of my projects and some notes about events in it. It is on the computer but I download to CD updates every once in awhile. I also try to keep a pictures of my quilts and quilted projects since I also give most of my work away.

amma 06-17-2010 10:17 PM

I forget to take pictures before I send things off  so I am trying harder to remember LOL
It is nice to be able to look back on all that you make over the years :D:D:D

Borntohandquilt 06-17-2010 10:51 PM

I take several digital pictures of each finished quilt and keep them on the computer. Some of them I need to apply for a quilt show, most of them I put on my private homepage. And of course I want to show them here!

1quilt_gma 06-17-2010 11:02 PM

I keep a project list of ideas, actual projects, progress dates, and finished dates.

I also take pictures and put them on Picasa..if my computer crashes, at least they are still there. I have missed a few at the beginning, but have most of them. I have started a blog and have them on that also.

I also started putting pictures of quilts in frames and hang them on the wall in my sewing area...right now I am a little behind in that.

harvsstuff 06-18-2010 01:53 AM

Yes I have photo albums of the things I have made over the years. I enjoy going through them every so often . I date the photos also. Denise

raptureready 06-18-2010 02:48 AM

I didn't used to but now I do--of paintings, quilts, and other things that I do. A quilt usually takes several months of collecting fabrics, planning, cutting, sewing, quilting, etc.,---like it took for my DD to get here---so I take pictures of everything I give birth to. LOL

mms61371 06-18-2010 03:48 AM

I take pictures of each one. I keep a journal with all the info (name, person receiving it, date finished, pattern used, machine quilting used, and yardage of each fabric). I, also, keep a 2 inch piece of each fabric in the quilt. I usually glue them on a piece of manilla folder. I know a bit excessive, but when I first started quilting someone (I can't remember who) told me to keep a record. This is how she said to do it. I keep everything in a 3 ring binder in sheet protectors. It is a very good reference when needed.

And for the baby quilts I do, I always print a picture and some info on it kinda like a postcard. The parents put it in their baby book or scrapbook.

JJs 06-18-2010 04:04 AM

I have pictures of EVERY quilt I've made except two - that's 93 pictures (not a wall hanging in the group!)
The first one was a polaroid picture around 1973 - a very simple quilt all done by hand - you know the saying, "you've come a long way, baby" LOL

shaverg 06-18-2010 05:30 AM

I do take a couple of photos of each quilt and keep any notes I made while making it.

littlehud 06-18-2010 07:37 AM

I have pics of most of my quilts. I love looking at the first ones and than the ones I do now. There has been some improvement. :D And there is still rooms for lots more.

hulahoop1 06-18-2010 08:20 AM

I have taken digital photos of all my quilts and have posted them in a blog (and I keep backups of the computer's hard drive, just in case). I've just started putting labels on the quilts I've gifted to others.

Great advice. I've taken pix but computer crashed and now I have no pix.

pollyjvan9 06-18-2010 10:13 AM

I started a quilt journal soon after I started quilting so I have photos of "almost" all my quilts. A few of the very 1st ones I know who they went to but don't have pics, and one very special quilt that I gave as a baby gift I let get away without a picture. Breaks my heart. I like going back and seeing how I have progressed in the this 5 years.

There is a phrase that always needs repeating. "Technology will fail you always. Back up, Back up, Back up." It was a sign we hung in our lab for reminding people not to rely on saving to one place. It also is good to know that your CD's will go bad eventually so check them periodically and change the information stored onto the newest format. It really is the pits when you realize something important is stored on something that you can no longer read or have a drive for (my particular fun is the LS-120 drives. They looked like a 3 1/2 inch floppy but stored like 100 megabytes more than the HD floppy but they looked the same. Too bad that one never really took off. The CD came out about the same time.) Guess who has stuff stored on floppies that can no longer be read by anything?

GrammaO 06-18-2010 10:52 AM

I just ordered a floppy drive reader. It cost about $16.00 from Amazon.com. My church had about 8 binders full of church clip art on floppy that none of our computers could read. I didn't want to throw them all away, so we got a reader and transferred them all to CD. Maybe that would work for your old floppies.

I have photos on the computer, but also a printout of all of them - in a picture album with notes on the name I gave the quilt, who I gave it to, whether it's pieced by hand or machine, and whether machine or hand quilted, and if machine quilted who did it - I had a few done by a LQS but then started with meandering on the 301 and then got the Bailey.
Also the date I finished the quilt if I have that information (on the quilts I did almost 30 years ago there's no way I remember that!)

Crafty1 06-18-2010 10:58 AM

When I remember to I take pics of what I've made. Around the holidays I feel rushed so I forgot to take pics before sending them out.

hobo2000 06-18-2010 11:00 AM

I keep 2 journals, one with ideas, color combinations that turn me on, decorative tiles, fences, anything that tweak my creativity. The other is all my finished quilts, etc. with pictures, info on the patterns, corrections I had to make, what I would do if I made it again, etc. Its amazing going thru it with my granddaughter, I can't remember some of them or where they went. 26 years of quilting does take a toll on the memory

lab fairy 06-18-2010 11:12 AM

Although I own two external floppy drives for other reasons, none will handle LS-120. A "floppy" is 1.44 MB. An LS-120 looks like a floppy but holds 120 MB. They are very different breeds of cat.
