I agree with asking her why she thinks they are too busy. My daughters like bedspreads that coordinate with the rest of the room. But they love having themed throws. They like having a Christmas quilt, a Halloween quilt and my oldest daughter has a baseball quilt with all the MLB teams and another one with the NFL quilt fabrics.

Or just figure out what her favorite colors are, make one and put it away. My guess when she sees you making one in colors she likes, she is going to want it.

This video for the 10-Minute Block quilts shows quilts that I consider non-busy. Perhaps this would be something your daughter would like:

perhaps a simple Chevron in solids or tone on tone instead of prints.

There is a quilt here that she might like as well, simple, straight forward and since it is two sided, it gives it a nice look whichever she chooses to flip it !

A lot of Amish style quilts work well with contemporary interiors.....so maybe look to those designs.

My mom is the same way, and when she wanted to buy a "summer" quilt and couldn't find anything she liked, I looked to ebay. I know her tastes, so it didn't take long for me to find a gorgeous cross stitched quilt top for sale, from a 1930's kit, Im sure, in great condition. I won it, and when she saw it she said, "That's EXACTLY what I want!" It was done in colors which match her bedroom, no less! I quilted it for her, and it's on her bed right now.

You just need more communication with your daughter, to better understand what she expects. Sit down together with some books or magazines and have fun "shopping" with her. I think it's great you want to make her a quilt she really needs and wants, but just doesn't realize it yet.

Maybe busy is more of a fabric choice too.

I just finished making a chevron quilt for baby shower in baby blues and grays; that was mom's choices. It turned out really pretty, but just a little boring for me. It certainly wasn't busy at all.

Hi Hot Rod. Your quilt, Dina, is really nice. Love the colors.

I just finished a Bargello with monochromatic cream to dark brown fabrics. Dina has one she made- in my mind they aren't "busy" but are sophisticated.

Definately a tonal quilt...just very simple. I pretty sure that she will like that. What is she using now?
