Do you know.......

Does anyone know of anyone nowadays who makes a quilt by hand-from sewing the patches together by hand to finishing off with the binding.

There are still people who make quilts that way. Are you looking to commission someone or just to connect with a fellow hand-piecer/quilter?

It is something I want to try.

I think hand made quilts are beautiful. Enjoy your new hobby.

I still piece 95% of my quilts by hand. I have been known to "whip" one out on the machine, but the machine is not portable, whereas hand-piecing is. I usually will work on my quilts at appointments, while riding in the car, or when I am watching tv. It takes me a lot longer to do it by hand, but I am usually not in a hurry to get it done, anyway, and I don't feel any pressure about that 1/4 inch seam. I am pretty good about 'eyeballing' my seams, and my seams all match up. I am in awe of those who can complete a quilt in a month or less; it usually takes me 2-3 months by hand. It depends on the pattern if it is hand-quilted or machine quilted. I have found that I like the piecing, not so much the quilting; seeing it all come together is great, but once it is done, so am I. I have a wonderful LA-er, as well as my local senior group to do the quilting for me. Win-Win for me. I get a beautiful quilt that I didn't have to quilt.
Whatever you choose, do it for your own enjoyment.

Jinny Beyer's book 'Quiltmaking by Hand' will tell you everything you need to know. She has detailed descriptions for every type of seam, and loads of photos.

I have 1 hand piecing project that I have started (will get a round to finishing one day :) ) It is what I take away on holidays and I will hand quilt it when I am finished. I find it very relaxing, give it a go one day

I always have a hand project going. I do make machine quilts but I am always spending down time, travel, work breaks, waiting time hands piecing.

Not recently, but I have done at least one completely by hand. Really not so bad - in fact enjoyed it. Even though I usually machine piece my quilts, they are all hand quilted. Give it a try, you'll like it. In addition to the Jinny Beyer info, look into English Paper Piecing. Might be a bit less intimidating to start with one of those projects.
