Parrothead 05-25-2011 04:04 PM

I have a queen size that I am going to cut to use for the two baby quilts I am making. I have a front load washer/dryer combo (made for RVs) that has a delicate cycle. I cannot soak in it (that is what the directions on the package say to do). What soap and fabric softener do you use? I am not prewashing fabric because I think it is easier to cut and piece that way. JMHO

MZStitch 05-25-2011 04:07 PM

No, I have never prewashed my batting. I would think that would be alot of work pressing it to make sure it lies flat when you layer your quilt.

virtualbernie 05-25-2011 04:10 PM

I don't prewash either fabric or batting. All gets washed after the quilt is done then it shrinks together if at all.

virtualbernie 05-25-2011 04:10 PM

Sorry--double post--itchy fingers :-)

Butterfli19 05-25-2011 04:26 PM

I prewash batting and fabric because I don't like the puckery look after washing.

W&N batting washes great and is so bright after. I don't use fab softener or a dryer sheet and if you take it right out of the dryer you don't have to iron it.

I figure if the quilt is going in the washer when it's done it's going in pieces beforehand. Haven't had a problem yet.

thimblebug6000 05-25-2011 04:28 PM

I put my batt in the washer, let it fill with cold water....soak 10 min...spin.... take it out & put it on air fluff in dryer until almost dry, then try to lay it flat until 100% dry.

It will still shrink some, but the end result isn't an "antique" looking quilt, just a well loved one.

justwannaquilt 05-25-2011 04:39 PM

I'm not a washer either. I have enough laundry to do without worring about washing fabric or batting. lol I know lazy way out but it works for me.

MadQuilter 05-25-2011 04:44 PM

I like the puckery look after the firs wash so I leave my batting alone. If it is very wrinkled, I may toss it in the dryer with a damp towel or just hang it over the banister to hang out.

hperttula123 05-25-2011 04:46 PM

I don't prewash mine. I like the crinkled look.

Jo M 05-25-2011 04:50 PM

I also prefer not to prewash.

f rogers 05-25-2011 04:51 PM

I don't pre wash I like the crinkled look.

Murphy 05-25-2011 05:30 PM

No, I don't prewash any batting.

Jennifer22206 05-25-2011 05:35 PM

I don't prewash anything unless it's for a swap.

luvspaper 05-25-2011 06:13 PM

I prewash fabric because (1) color issues and (2) I have found an issue with my bindings pulling away from the sandwich.....

But I have never pre-washed the batting.

RkayD 05-25-2011 06:23 PM

I never pre~wash anything..fabric included. And before the quilt leaves my hands I wash it in hot water and dry on high. I figure if it can take like its gonna be living in the real world. Then thats a good thing. =)

M.I.Late 05-25-2011 06:25 PM

I pre-wash both. I don't like the wrinkled look. If I want a quilt to look antique after it's washed I don't wash it. But I prefer for them to look newer longer, so I pre-wash everything.

sueisallaboutquilts 05-25-2011 06:27 PM

I've never washed batting although I will take it out, unfold it, and let it "rest" before I use it. Not sure what you call it, sorry. It was what my first instructor told us to do :D

FranW 05-25-2011 06:32 PM

I prewash my fabrics but not the batting. Then I wash the quilt after it is completed. Gives that crinkled look!

watson's mom 05-25-2011 06:55 PM

I prewash both fabric and batting. Just rinse in hot water and spin dry, then light drying cycle. Hate the crinkled look. Warm and Natural shrinks too much not to treat it first.

emmy 05-25-2011 06:55 PM

I do put mine in the dryer for about 10-15 minutes to get rid of all the lint.

roselady 05-25-2011 08:16 PM

I just pre-washed W&N for a more modern type quilt, that I didn't want to be crinkly. I have a top load machine so I did it the way the package instructed, except I did spin it and it was fine. Since you have a front load machine, I would just do a short cycle on gentle and it should be fine, front load machines are gentler even on the regular cycle. I dried mine on low heat and put a clean dry towel in with it, it came out great.

Donna H-M 05-26-2011 02:29 AM

I did one recently. I washed in delicate cycle then dryed on warm setting. It was fine and didn't need to be ironed.

I pre-wash my Warm & Natural because I don't want the shrinkage afterwards. The makers don't recommend doing it in a washing machine although they acknowledge that some people have good results! I soak it in the Bath with a mild detergent, rinse several times and then squeeze to remove as much water as possibe. I line my spare bed with a sheet of polythene, then a sheet. With my husband's help, we carefully spread it out over the sheet and leave it to dry. (I make sure the windows are wide open to get a good current of air through.) It dries beautifully (takes 2 or 3 days, depending on the weather outside) and doesn't need any fluffing up. I'm amazed at the amount of 'yellow colour' that comes out in the bath! Incidentally, you should never iron batting!

Sorry - just re-read your message - hadn't sunk in that you're in an RV - so what I've written isn't much help to you - but, maybe it is to someone else!

MerryQuilter 05-26-2011 03:12 AM

No never heard or read that is necessary

Lavada 05-26-2011 03:29 AM

never heard of wasing batting before learned something new today

yetta 05-26-2011 03:31 AM

no, I do not pre wash batting, fabric yes .....

Jersey Gal 05-26-2011 03:57 AM

The very first crib quilt I made, I soaked the W&N batting, and hung it outdoors to dry. I noticed there was no shrinkage. Since then, I use the batting right out of the package.

quiltinghere 05-26-2011 04:01 AM

I've heard you can spray with water and then toss in dryer for the same effect.

Haven't tried it yet.

sewmom 05-26-2011 04:26 AM

I don't predawn my batting- I will let it rest after taking it out of the package. Before I sandwich the quilt, I will remove any cat hair, threads or anything that it has collected with a sticky roller, then hover my steam iron over it to remove the wrinkles. Recently borrowed a hand steamer and will now use that. I like the wrinkled look of a quilt after washing.

I agree... you dont need detergent. just hot water. remember low heat in the dryer, because the scrim is poly and will melt if too hot. ask me how I know. LOL. I use Warm compy. most of the time and I am a longarm quilter.

quiltease 05-26-2011 04:52 AM

I don't prewash, but I do soak and spin the batting, then into the dryer until just damp, lay out flat until dry. I have also taken it into the shower with me, roll up in a towel to get the excess water out and a quick spin in the washer. Again, pop into the dryer. I have gotten busy and let it fully dry in the dryer with no problems. I tried the spritzing with water and then dry but it didn't shrink and when I washed the whole quilt it did, so that trick didn't work for me. Really depends on what finished look you want.
bev. :)

grandma h 05-26-2011 04:53 AM

I tried prewashing for my first quilt...was a very expensive lesson...never did again...but always wash and iron my fabrics... but I make only quilts...

Mariposa 05-26-2011 04:56 AM

No, I don't prewash batting.

sewbizgirl 05-26-2011 05:18 AM

It depends on how you want your finished quilt to look. If you like the antique crinkly look, don't prewash the batting. If you want the finished quilt to be smoother, then prewash the batting to get the initial shrinkage done ahead of time.

nab 05-26-2011 05:39 AM

I'm not a pre-washer either. Wastes too much time and I like the crinkle look. Makes them look comfy.

PS Stitcher 05-26-2011 06:14 AM

 Nope never wash my batting either and I have never had any problems.

I don't wash any of it, it makes it easier for me to work with it - that is just my preference.

Me too. I don't like the crinkled look. And I soak and dry in medium to hot (water and air).

Boopey 05-26-2011 07:23 AM

I prewashed W&N cotton batting once, what a mistake! When I took it out of the dryer it was so linty I had a hard time working with it because it kept my eyes itchy and made a mess in my sewing room. I love the stuff, I just don't prewash any more.
