White vinegar will do the same as a dye catcher. It will keep any running colors from being absorbed by the other fabrics and it will also help "set" the colors.

Just pour some into your wash load. I tend to wash my new fabric together, not with my clothes, so if I have a big load I use a couple cups of vinegar, a smaller load I use less. It all gets washed out so your fabric doesn't smell like vinegar when it's done.

Before color catcher, white vinegar was what people used.

Hey y'all; I just found a new product on the laundry aisle today. Brand name is "Carbona" and it's a dye grabber. It's good for 30 washes provided it's not dried in the dryer between washes. They also recommend a smaller load so it can circulate freely. It's a terry cloth piece of fabric. They also sell regular (1 wash) color catchers but I bought both b/c I intend to use the dye grabber for jsut fabrics and/or quilts. It was relatively inexpensive considering you get 30 washed before its effectivenss diminshes. It's also good for catching grime according to the box.

I do! The exception was my DD 120" sq. quilt I made her last year -- wouldn't fit in my washer..... :lol: :lol:

I use Color Catcher from Walmart. It is with the laundry detergent & fabric softners.

I also use the shout color catchers when I prewash my fabrics. I was shocked how much some of the fabrics bleed.
Also I even wash my fat quarters. I use those knit zipper bags that you use for fine fabrics undies etc. It's great because they don't all tangle up in knots.
I use the color catchers in almost every load of wash since a long time ago I turned my husbands underware Pink. He wasn't to happy. Also if you can hang your fabric on a clothes line to dry it is alot easier to iron. Kathy kjym

I got sold on Shout Color Catcher cloths when I worked at Target and had to wear red and khaki. Not wanting to always have to wash everything separately, I used them and never had a problem. Now I use them especially when I wash reds, dark blues, dark any color before putting in a quilt. They are wonderful.

I used them a lot when I had a top-loading washing machine, but now I have a front-loader and they seem to lodge themselves under the window, in the seal, so I'm not sure if they are really doing any good.

I wash my quilts before gifting as I love that crinkly vintage look and I have dogs and cats. I love the Shout color catchers and I use several when I wash a quilt. I did use the cloth carbona one, but like the Shout better. I have heard that muslin will do the same thing.
