Yes, I do wash new quilts even though I have preshrunk all fabarics before, I love the look I get when the cotton batting draws up that 3%, I also find that it evens out irregularities that may have occured during the quilting process. Also if Iam giving away the quilt which I ususally am, I know it goes out clean and it gives me one last chance to catch any problems that might have escaped notice. I however do wash in cold water, and I use dryer sheets to soften, however if I knew someone had allergies/issues (which they don't) I would govern myself accordingly.:)

I always wash mine - I have 3 quilt inspectors so tend to have lots of cat/dog hair that needs to come out before I send the quilts off to their destinations.

I always wash a finished quilt....it washes out any starch, chemicals, stitching marks, oils from my hands ....it also may help to show any areas that need attention such as seams coming unsewn, threads to be clipped, etc.
Plus, the more washing, the softer and more comfy the quilt becomes....my dd came home with a quilt I made her 10 years ago, it's like butter... so soft and dreamy to touch! |
I had a friend call me in tears because she thought she had ruined a baby quilt I gave her. She's a cat person, I'm a cat person so I wasn't as cautious about washing that one. I ran over to see what sort of damage she had done to it and it was the crinkly look you get when you wash. I had to explain to her that it was supposed to look like that, I just hadn't washed it yet. She didn't believe me until I showed several I had at home. So now I make an effort to wash unless I know it's going to be a wall hanging or it's going on my bed.

I always PRE-WASH all the fabric before I make a quilt so usually do not wash it when it is finished.

I always wan mine. I have even washed just the top, it help check my seems. Although with my skill level increasing, they may not be necessary. But I always wash it helps with strings and dog hair. Still trying to train the kids to do their chors, but bot much luck in that department. And if I use any marking tool, I want it to come off.

me too...also I have three cats that always seem to find what I am working on. I also use glue and 505 spray I love the crinkle look it hides all of my FMQ'ng oops...I also tell them I have washed it and its ready to be used. Love, love quilts just out of the dyer.

What is quilt soap? I always just use what ever I have. Usually Tide and I wash in cold water so far no issues except when I first start quilting ripped seams...I just fixed it last weekend after putting it in the closet for a year. I took off the binding and cut off the border which had the tear and then rebinded. Now it a small lap or kitty quilt. .
