Do you wash your quilts in hot water

Do y'all wash your quilts in hot water after they're completed to make sure they play nice in case the recipient has a brain dump and puts them in hot water? I always use warm water, but if there's a possibility it'll end up in hot water, should I use hot water too?

Annie68 05-10-2014 04:36 AM

I don't use hot water, and I wouldn't. Make a label saying warm or cool water only and then whatever happens it really isn't your worry.
:)

Deb watkins 05-10-2014 04:38 AM

I wash my fabrics, warm water and dryer.....then when I give my quilt, I ask that they be washed in cool water and either line dry or tumble on low. I haven't heard of any problems with colors running.

Homespun 05-10-2014 05:49 AM

I never wash anything with hot water! Especially not quilts.

ManiacQuilter2 05-10-2014 05:52 AM

I would print out washing instructions and included them with the quilt. I would NEVER wash a silk blouse in hot water and I treat my quilts like they were made from silk. I don't use abrasive laundry soap either. I want one of my quilts to be seen on the Antique Roadshow 2152 long after I am dead and buried!!! If the people you give the gift of a quilt don't treat it right, it is their lost, not yours.

tessagin 05-10-2014 06:00 AM

I pre wash all my fabric before I use it. After I'm done, I wash in warm or cold and short cycle. Throw into dryer at intervals. The dryer is a low temp.

Now I soak all new fabrics in hot water (and dry them, of course) before cutting them. I know if my fabrics " play nicely together" before they are cut.

But to answer your question: I wash a finished quilt in cool to warm water on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent, and dry gently.

Line drying could result in broken threads from the weight of the wet quilt. Drying flat is a better option, or tumble drying on low heat.

Was it Forest Gump who said....You can't stop stupid? Even if a quilt I had was severely dirty or think kids...throw up or something like that on it, I would still wash in warm water after having sprayed the areas that are dirty with 409 or some other really good cleanser/disinfectant. I use Odoban a lot as my final rinse softener. It is both a disinfectant and the original Eucalyptus scent smells good. My washer has a setting for pre-wash and 2nd rinse. If it is dirty enough that I need a pre-wash, then I add a capful of Odoban to the first wash.

I am going to start labeling mine as warm/cold wash, dryer on low. Do not hang while wet. This board makes you think, doesn't it?

Jeanne S 05-10-2014 09:43 AM

Like the others I would never wash a quilt in hot water--cool or warm only.

crafty pat 05-10-2014 09:59 AM

I only use warm or cold for my old and new quilts.

Craftnut 05-10-2014 11:41 AM

No, would never use hot water. And yes, lay flat to dry.

Prism99 05-10-2014 11:44 AM

I wash my quilts (for the first time only) in hot water because I use Synthrapol to ensure no dye bleeds settle into the fabric, and Synthrapol requires hot water to be totally effective. I do not prewash my fabrics, so I use hot water and Synthrapol in the largest front-loader at the local laundromat to ensure no unwanted bleeds. After that, it is cool water washes only.

citruscountyquilter 05-10-2014 12:08 PM

I wash all my laundry in cold water however I found that this did not work to get the glue out when I glue basted so now I wash the quilts in warm water. I have a high efficiency washer so use the setting that gives me extra water when I do a quilt. I have dried them both laying flat and in the dryer. It really depends on what the weather is outside which method I use.

quiltingcandy 05-10-2014 12:21 PM

I usually wash all my clothes in warm water, because it isn't that warm but fills faster than just cold water alone. Most people I know do the same. For drying, almost everything I dry on low. If it is a nice day, and I have time, will do a partial dry then hang it outside to finish.

mcdaniel023 05-11-2014 02:57 AM

I wash all of my gift quilts in warm water with a color catcher and tumble dry. I give instructions for washing and include a color catcher.

nancyw 05-11-2014 02:58 AM

When my DGs stayed with us they got a case of head lice at school and you bet I washed there quilts in hot water. Tehu cane out fine . A little puckered but otherwise okay.

quiltinghere 05-11-2014 04:20 AM

Only white clothes are washed in hot water here.

Everything else, including quilts, are washed in COLD water.

Instructions on how to wash a quilt is a good idea.

Nan

bearisgray 05-11-2014 04:29 AM

I think a " quilt that is to be used a lot" should be able to withstand a hot water wash, BUT I think they look nice longer if washed gently in cool to warm water.

Tink's Mom 05-11-2014 04:34 AM

I wouldn't use hot water, but I would add Oxiclean if a boost is needed for cleaning. Warm or cool water only, for me.

Boston1954 05-11-2014 05:46 AM

I try to avoid really hot water. I think warm is good enough. My quilts do not get overly dirty, so I go gently.

Taughtby Grandma 05-11-2014 07:19 AM

I use cold water on the permanent press cycle, I also tell that to anyone I give a quilt to.

Karamarie 05-11-2014 07:34 AM

I think the HE washers are better for quilts as they don't have an agitator to get caught around - or just using a gentle cycle with washers with agitators should work.

QUILTNMO 05-11-2014 07:43 AM

I wash all mine in warm water and baby ivorysoap!

pw6 05-11-2014 08:06 AM

Never, I don't wash my quilts unless they are soiled. take a dryer sheet and put quilt into your dryer for about 10 minutes , it will sanitize and freshen them.

ckcowl 05-11-2014 09:48 AM

I launder my quilts the way I expect the recipient will launder them. I do not use hot water I use either cool or warm. I also include care instructions on every label.

0tis 05-11-2014 10:13 AM

I only use cool water to wash mine and I rarely prewash.

glassdriller 05-11-2014 10:27 AM

Barb in Louisiana: have you tried the Lavender scented Odo-ban?

HouseDragon 05-11-2014 10:34 AM

I prewash all fabrics in hot water/cold rinse using the gentle cycle, then machine dry on low.

I label my quilts: Machine Wash Warm/Cold Rinse, Machine Dry on Low.

If they are accidentally washed in hot water, the fabric has already been in hot water and it shouldn't affect the quilt at all.

Absolutely! The water in a washing machine is never as hot as you think it is going to be since there is a long interval of cold water coming into the machine before the hot water ever gets to it. I use two color catchers to try to be sure any color bleeding gets caught And then I put it in a hot dryer. I don't expect my quilts to be used to wrap a refrigerator when someone is moving, but I do expect that a cat or a dog will jump into somebody's lap or onto a bed or a chair or sofa on which there may be a quilt. I don't like to have things that can't take the rough and tumble of full family life. And I'm not making heirlooms when I make a quilt, which is a good thing because they would never pass muster with the quilt police anyway. froggyintexa

JudyTheSewer 05-11-2014 10:46 AM

Yes, I use HOT water. I prewash the fabrics in hot.

Once the quilt is ready to be gifted (I haven't kept any for myself) I wash in hot water in a front load HE machine and machine dry on the cotton setting. I include a Laundry Directions printout when I gift the quilt that basically says that it is their quilt and they should treat it as they want to. I let them know that I already washed and dryed it at those high temp settings.

Everyone I've spoken with has said they would never wash my quilts in hot water but at least they know that is an option if there is a case where it should be done (lice example above is a good reason!). Also, I don't want my quilts to be heirlooms, I want them to be used and dragged around and that might mean they need a good washing in hot at some time. But, again, once it is out of my hands it is their quilt to do with as they want to. :-)

Never ever!

117becca 05-11-2014 02:05 PM

I wash cold water - but so is everything else i own, cept for whites (they get hot)...

If it's warm out, i'll tumble dry to get most of the moisture out of it - then i'll lay it out on the back porch. If it's winter - it's gets tumbled dry til dry.

Furball 05-11-2014 03:11 PM

Almost all of my quilts are charity baby quilts. I want to be sure the teen mothers can treat them as roughly as needed to remove stains. I prewash all fabrics in hot and then wash the finished quilt in hot using scent free sensitive skin detergent.

i wash my personal quilts in a watm/ gentle cycle.

oldtisme 05-11-2014 03:19 PM

glassdriller, I use Odoban all the time I have 4 inside dogs, I didn't know it comes in Lavender! I haven't seen it at Walmart where I buy my Odoban, where do you find yours?

no no absolutely not

penski 05-11-2014 10:31 PM

i always wash my fabric in warm or hot water before i start a quilt becuase if it is going to shrink i want it to shrink before i make the quilt >> dont like surprise from the fabric after the quilt is done , if i am giving it to another person i make sure they know to wash it in cool to warm water and tumble dry

Stitchit123 05-12-2014 03:44 AM

I always tell recipients to wash quilts in cold water. I have been washing every thing in cold water for at least 40 yrs It's better for your fabrics. They last longer. And all forms of laundry detergents have always been made to work in cold water. Hot water was not always so convenient. Also liquid and powdered bleaches work better in cold water.

I always wash my fabric in hot water before I make my quilt. After I have finished I wash in warm water. Never a problem and I have several of my quilts that I use regularly.
