This is what I see in that star.

Each individual diamond section of a Lemoyne star (the red), with strips like a log cabin added just the top two sides of the diamond, for about 6 rounds/fabric changes (I'm guessing 1" strips to finish at 1/2"), final row being a series of HSTs (looks like finished size is 1 or 1.5"), with every other of those rows ending in the red diamond, keeping a sharp and accurate 60º angle.

Then I would think they would take the 8 individual blocks and square them up using a 60º ruler to create a very large diamond, to be sewn to each other, matching seams like you would a Lone Star.

When adding the rounds of strips, I would probably trim the top accurately, but leave the ends hanging out there until I trimmed it up to 60º, because the strips don't go all the way to the bottom.

I hope this makes sense to you. I stared at that star, used a magnifier to view it, and this is what I can make of it.

Maybe if you made just one scrap block to see if it would work out because I'm not at all sure about strip sizes.

Quiltingfan. Go back to the web page of the quilt and click on it. When the image comes up, there is a box that says "click for larger images". Click on this and get several images. Once you get to the clear picture of the star, use a magnifying program to look even closer. You can get them from the web, or windows will probably have one on your PC. Go to Accessories, choose Accessibility, and there should be a magnifier program there. Very basic but it works.

AFter doing this a second time, I think the finished sizes of the strips are 1" and the HSTs are 2". However, that is still a wild guess.

It is Amish ~ beautiful work. Looks like a fun project. Be sure to let everyone know what you find. A 'feathered star' is on my bucket list after a big stack of UFO's.

It definitely looks like a LeMoyne Star in the center with strips added to each diamond like in a log cabin pattern, then put together. I think Pati's diagram is right on! You could add as many strips as you want. It is a beautiful quilt.

This star may be the one I found in the book, Rotary Magic

I used EQ7 to do this design. Started with one of the library feathered star blocks and removed lines in the diamonds to turn them into half log cabin blocks.

As for a pattern..... if one isn't found: There are patterns available for half log cabin stars. Feathers are half square triangle units and a diamond at the tip. Or use the feather part of any feathered star pattern as long as the measurements of the side of the diamond matches the strip of feathers.
(I know, easy for *me* to say..... but it shouldn't be difficult at all. really.)

After all this discussion I may have to add this to my proposed patterns to write list. <G>
