If you can't find it, upholstery needles are similar to it,Perhaps you could utilise one of those?

quiltbuddy 09-23-2011 03:27 AM

If you can't find one in Austrilia, PM me and I can look to see if I have one. Mine would be an upholstery needle. They look the same. It would be easy to put the needle in an envelope to send to you.

I couldn't see a close-up of it, but if it is a curved needle, you can find them in the upholstery dept of Joanns. Just be very careful when you use it, as the tip is very sharp and can cause some nice bloody pricks. Ask me how I know.

I think the top one looks the most like the needle used in the video. Showed it to DH and he looked at yours closely. I walked to three stores yesterday looking for the long darning needles and didn't find any. A trip to Hobby Lobby is next on the agenda, a bit far to walk to.

Capucine, I make raspberry jam, pie, shortcake and we eat some on our cereal every morning. We have the everbearing kind and get two crops a season. We freeze some and give many away to family and friends. To pick your own at a farm, one pays $3.25 a pint and we give them away by the quart.

I am looking forward to trying out this type of needle, we tie quilts for charity at our church and if it would speed up the work, will be worth the bother to make some.

Wal-mart carries the curved needles.

LindaDeeter 09-23-2011 04:38 AM

I got one of those in a pkg of needles at the Family Dollar.

quilt3311 09-23-2011 04:52 AM

I got one in a package of assorted needles. It was either at JoAnns or WalMart, but it has been quite a few years ago so don't know if they still carry them. The package had large yarn needles and then two sizes of this curved needle. I think the needle is designed for upholstery use though.

jem 09-23-2011 05:12 AM

you can buy 'half moon' needles similar to this one at JoAnn's they come in a package with i think three needles. I use them to tie my quilts and find they are easy and good.

NOELLA 09-23-2011 05:20 AM

It is an upholstery needle I used one when I did upholstry.

I have had one for years and think I bought it to fix one of my upholstered chairs. It came with about three or four other different needles. I think I will use it to tie my quilts. Check with an upholster

Macie 09-23-2011 05:34 AM

I just googled 3 1/2 curved needle and up came a whole bunch. I would send the link but do not know how to do it here but can send it to you in an email.

I have had several of these needles--known as upholstery needles-- ever since I started sewing when dinosaurs still
roamed !! I inherited them from my mother who used them in her slipcover making or upholstery mending. They are just perfect for quilt tying because I can control the "bite"
it takes from the quilt layers--smaller for a baby quilt or larger as the quilt size enlarges. Assorted hand needles always included them years ago but I have never bought one since inheriting them. Recycle is not a new word !

This looks like some of my upholstery needles. I did not think to use it myself but the next time I tie a quilt I will be getting the curved needle out to use. I have been using straight yarn needles with the big eye but the curved needle would be sooo much easier on the hands.
You should be able to buy about anywhere that sells various kinds of needles, suggest Hancock's first, then WalMart or anywhere selling upholstery yardgoods.

Carol J. 09-23-2011 06:09 AM

The needle shown in the first message is not the half circle that one buys for upholstery, this one is bent halfway at a 45 degree angle and the tip is also bent a half inch from the end. Look carefully at the video and you will see this is not the half circle needle.
We have been looking everywhere for this and capucene's DH made some samples. Mine is going to try too as soon as I find some long darning needles.

Found this at Wal Mart today. Less then 2$. You get 6 different needles in the pack. Will use these for my tie quilts.

kwilter 09-23-2011 09:00 AM

Her video needle is NOT the curved upholstery kind and is NOT found on Google, Hobby Lobby, Walmart, etc, etc. My belief is that the one she uses is homemade. Might be her spouse's name.

Krisb 09-23-2011 09:00 AM

It certainly looks like an upholstery needle to me.

Jo Belmont 09-23-2011 09:57 AM

I've usually seen and purchased them in packages of assorted needles for "Household" use. Joann's has all kinds available at:
http://www.joann.com/joann/search/se...Acurved+needle

As to hand needles, I always like the John James.

Hope this helps.

Carol J. 09-23-2011 10:15 AM

Jo. Those needles are not the same as the one used in the video, I just looked, hoping it would be available from Joann's. Check the needle in the video, it is bent like an elbow and the tip bent out too. Quite different.

I also would say and upholstery needle. I used this for just this reason holding the needle with a thread puller. The kind that looks like scissors but is a clamp. I'm a nurse and we call them Kelly's or snaps.

ShabbyTabby 09-23-2011 12:33 PM

I googled curved quilting needles and found them on a Hancock's website. They are actually specified for tying quilts. However, by looking at the video it appears the one she is using is shaped more like a fish hook. So perhaps it is a different needle.

pbreon 09-23-2011 12:48 PM

That is upholstery needle... for sure, I have one and it came with a few others for heavy duty fabric on a card in a packet.... I think you might be able to find it or them at Joanns in the area where the upholstery fabrics and notions are for that fabric... or possibly at an upholstery shop where they sell the fabrics just for upholstery... call around first but do say it comes on a card a group w/ the strong needles...

debbieoh 09-23-2011 02:47 PM

Looks like a carpet curved needle. Joann's Fabric sells them

susanlh 09-23-2011 02:51 PM

I have a package of curved needles you can have if you want for tying. I got 2 packs for a gift and don't need both of them. Let me know and I will drop in the mail.

Grambi 09-23-2011 04:34 PM

I just bought a variety pack that contained two of these needles at Dollar General. I think it was less than $2.

sammy89 09-23-2011 04:53 PM

its an upholstery needle I used them for that before

johnniesgirl 09-23-2011 04:53 PM

That's exactly what it is - an upholstery needle. I have several.

1000projects 09-23-2011 04:59 PM

Looked at jo anns today. They have straight upholstry needles up to about 8" long. With A small propane torch and some minor blacksmithing, you can get just what you want.

Krafty Nancy 09-23-2011 05:01 PM

Hard to get a really good look at the needle in the video but it looks very much like a shoemaker's leather needle. Leather needles were (and probably still are) made in various sizes and thicknesses for use on different parts of the shoe.
I'm sure a curved upholstery needle would work just fine.

nightquilter 09-23-2011 10:24 PM

Wal-mart also has a package of needles with one of these neddles in it.

rona thickpenny 09-23-2011 11:16 PM
