It looks a lot like an upholstery needle to me. They can be found at any fabric store.

MrsBoats 09-22-2011 03:58 AM

That might be an upholstery needle-I know some the big ones for upholstery are bent. That's where I'd start looking, anyway.

capucine 09-22-2011 04:07 AM

Thank you i will do a search for it now. Have a good day:)

Years ago when you bought a card of or a set of needles, you got this one with it. It is definitely an upholstery needle. A good thing to get used to for tying quilts but I
never had any luck using one. You might find on in the notions and fabric department of any store that sells upholstery or sewing fabrics.

Is this the one?

katsewnsew 09-22-2011 04:23 AM

I got mine at WalMart , it also had a doll needle in the package. Look at their notions wall by the pins, etc. It was only a few dollars, I use the doll needle to sew buttons thru pincushions.

Fran Juern 09-22-2011 04:24 AM

I think you can get this at JoAnn's . It comes in a pack of asst'd

sewmary 09-22-2011 04:24 AM

I have a set of upholstery needles with different curved and large needles. Used them for doll making way back when.

This needle doesn't look 'arched' it looks bent in specific places. Looks straight where her fingers hold the needle then it bends for an inch or so and then it bends again at the tip.
She even calls it a Gaven Easy Tie Needle.
SUGGESTION: Try changing your topic heading to be more specific. ISO: GAVEN easy tie needle for tie quilting.

Good luck - will watch for answers on where to purchase too.

QuiltnNan 09-22-2011 04:34 AM

the title of the youtube video is Gaven's Easy Tie . i tried to google the name of the needle including changing the name to Gavin, but nothing came up. she had a couple of questions from viewers about the needle, but there are no answers there. it looks like an extra long upholstery needle that is bent at a 90 degree angle

pocoellie 09-22-2011 04:49 AM

I've never seen a needle like that, I've seen and have the curved needles and I use them for the quilts I tie, but this one looks even easier. If you find out where to get them, please keep us posted where you found them.

Carol J. 09-22-2011 04:53 AM

Look in the needlework department of Hobby Lobby or Michaels for a needle with a bent hook on the end. Seems to me I needed that type of needle for a certain project in stitching. Or ask DH to bend the end of a darning needle for you. Might be hard to do but give it a try. I will ask mine to try it. A half inch from the end should do the trick. If the needle is tempered steel, it won't bend.
We might be onto something here. We tie quilts at our church and a bent needle might work for some of the ladies.

Deborah12687 09-22-2011 05:02 AM

It is a darning needle

Carol J. 09-22-2011 05:31 AM

In my sewing cabinet I found an old set of upholstery needles, two of them are bent slightly at the end. One is used for repairing upholstery and the other is called a packing needle. Used for sewing the tops of sacks and bags. Made in England and sold for household repairs. Very heavy but I will try them for tying quilts.
There is also a sailmakers needle, sharp on the end but half of it is flat.
I am going to look at Hobby Lobby to see if they have these needles.
I save everything.

GwynR 09-22-2011 05:39 AM

I have used the semi circle one that is so easy to find. This bent one looks far easier! Hope I can find one!

wvdek 09-22-2011 05:41 AM

Seems to me there was another thread recently with a picture of a needle like this. I'll check.

OK, here is a similar one but she say's it is a machine needle. Don't see how.

GwynR 09-22-2011 05:50 AM

So I went back and watched the vid again, that needle is definitely bent not curved! I cannot find anything like it! Anyone else had any luck???

susie-susie-susie 09-22-2011 05:53 AM

That is an upholstery needle. I have bought several sets over the years. They come with a large curved needle, a smaller curved needle, and very long straight needle--probably 3 inches long, and a shorter straight needle. Both straight needles are very thick and have a large eye. I think the package with 4 different sizes of curved needles would do the trick. I'm guessing that she bent her needle herself.

Sue

but she specifically calls it the Gaven's Easy Tie... so there must be one out there somewhere

Carol J. 09-22-2011 07:25 AM

Are you sure that Gaven isn't her name? And she is promoting her style of tying a quilt?

hmmmm.... could be :)

capucine 09-22-2011 08:15 AM

Funny how she did not answer to the comments left by others. I wonder if she had bent the needle to suit herself? Well I'll keep searching and post again soon as I find the needle: )

capucine 09-22-2011 08:20 AM

I think you ae right Carol that is her name.

capucine 09-22-2011 08:24 AM

I will leave post if and when I can find where to buy the needle I am still searching

We determined that that needle was actually a machine needle bent by mistake.

BellaBoo 09-22-2011 10:27 AM

I found a card of needles that has the curved needles of different sizes at the Dollar Store, the big yellow sign one. The whole card was $1.

craftybear 09-22-2011 10:29 AM

I hope you find it soon

I searched the web for the Gaven easy tie needle by clicking on the aprylcallaway name. Got April Callaway selling golf clubs etc. but was offered a site with the other spelling. Looked at some of the links there and the needle is mentioned several times and the video was shown many times. A real mystery but the needle looks to me now like a long darning needle which I use for typing quilts. It is bent to a 45 degree angle and the tip bent just a bit a half inch from the end. I think the video was made to show us how to tie a quilt and not to advertise the needle as much but she shows it clearly just for a moment. It does look like it would work well for the purpose. I will see if my DH can make one. Meanwhile we will all keep looking the needle in the "quilting video" not the haystack.

Carol J. 09-22-2011 11:18 AM

I showed it to DH and he said he would try to make one like that. If the needle is long enough, if it isn't too thick, if it isn't too hard a steel, he thought he would try. I will give him a long darning needle and see what he can do. Right now he went out to pick raspberries so keep in touch, will get back to you when he tries. He is always willing to try something like this. Might not be today.

Ok Ladies DH spent some time remodelling a darning needle into this mystery needle from youtube. he used my kitchen Butane gas torch to soften the needle and to reshape and below are the final result. Maybe your DH can alter the angle to suit your style of sewing:) I have tried mine and found it easy to use :)

These are frequenty included on cards of miscellaneous needles and should be available anywhere they sell needles.
