it looks like the friendship star, but wonky. I love it. I planned to make one once, but never did. Maybe someday.

I love this block. I think the post is simply a smaller version overlaying the larger. In looking at the PDF (thanks for the post), the templates remind me so much of a crazy quilt template I bought some time back - one with no right angles.

i think it is the RAR block. they just added another strip of color to the pointed parts. i would eliminate the set-in seams by dividing the block into eight pieces and then piecing the parts together again unless you're good at machine setting angles.
or you can do it by hand. it's a very nice block and very unusual.
