Does anyone know

Just bought new machine (Juki 600) I want to try out. Of course I had to choose a scrappy quilt patern. Here I am in our RV (snowbirding) in Yuma fr the winter and of course no scraps, Bought several FQ & sevral whites. Six blocks later and they are beginnng o all look the same. Does anyone know how little fabric Walmart will cut ( how many inches by wof ). Just looked on Ebay they want 10.50 for 100 2.5 inch squares.

cathyvv 11-21-2013 09:15 PM

I've asked for 1.8th of a yard and had no problem getting it cut. Good luck!

Stiffchick 11-21-2013 09:25 PM

Do you stay in Yuma the whole time? If you ever come up to mesa, you can go through my scraps and stash.

SherriB 11-22-2013 03:02 AM

Our Walmart will cut as much or as little as you need. Hancock Fabrics does the same. The only place I have ever had to buy a minimum is Hobby Lobby. The store here requires you to buy at least an eighth of a yard.

AliKat 11-22-2013 05:47 AM

There used to be some great quilting groups down in Yuma. I bet if you meet up with some of them you could get a lot of scraps. Heck my stash was started by quilting friends up in Phoenix. Now it is my time to be giving to other newbies.

I spent a winter there working for the Az resort system, my euphemistic name for it, and met a lot of really nice quilters. I even made a quilt in my hoter room after work. I'd stop for a light dinner, then stop off at the bar and get 2 [free] hot cranberry juices to take to my room, then quilt away.

Thanks, this is helpful. Now if I can just find an employee there to actually cut fabric for me. Last time I was there 3 customers were waiting (one said 15 min.) for someone to cut fabric.

true4uca 11-22-2013 09:13 AM

Thank you for your generous offer. Alas just too far away for me.

Just ask, I'll send you some, probably a dozen other QB members would also.

tessagin 11-22-2013 09:21 AM

I run into that down here trying to find someone to cut fabric for me. I don't have enough patience so I go to the next employee or even the store manager. I told a manager once. I'll cut the fabric if you want to run the little pricing machine. Next thing I knew there were 3 employees. Ready to cut. I gave them dirty looks and then asked why they didn't want to cut when I asked for help earlier. Then the manager gave them dirty looks. Because of the wait we all got discounts.

I was told at our local walmart, the ones cutting fabrics get less pay. Here the electronic employees cut fabric and make a more generous cut.
I think the managers didn't want the fabrics back and can then tell headquarters they aren't selling much. Hoping it will be taken out. Wish I knew how to contact them and tell them why it isn't selling very well. There was a week ago a couple of workers and about three customers picking out fabrics. I turned around and the workers were gone.
They are again down sizing fabric dept. Best thing is to keep standing there and try to catch a worker to call for help.

This is the quilt I'm wanting to make. Saw it in the Scrappy Quilt show here on this board. Dunster didn't have a name for it. Whoops guess that didn't work.

As far as I know, they'll cut small pieces as long as your cutter knows what you are asking for. If you can even find anyone willing to cut fabric for you. A problem in our area.

I left 4 bolts on the table since they could not find ANYONE in the store willing to cut. I don't know how the two cusomers behind me fared. I left after 4 requests (over the whole store loudspeaker) to find someone. Not the first time by any means

30 minutes and 4 requests and NO ONE..My choices are still there.

May I ask why you'd ask anyone to cut less than 1/8 of a yard? Most places you need that much to square up a piece.

About a year ago, I begged and I waited and I begged and I hunted for employees and I waited. So I cut 2 yards and took the bolt and the piece I cut up to teh register. Wanna talk about getting employees excited. 30 minutes later I got to check out. WTG, Wally World!

If you get your phone and dial 1-800-WAL-MART, you will get headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. Tell them of your experiences and give them the store number and/or location and they will take it from there. That's how we got fabrics back in our Walmart store. There were enough of us who complained about their being taken out in the first place. I'm sorry you had such poor experiences. The folks at our Walmart are usually very nice and helpful.

mjsylvstr 11-23-2013 04:27 AM

they told me once that they would cut 1" if that's what I wanted……….

I used to work at local WM just S of Ft. Worth and that is not true, someone told you that as an excuse for lazy help. I was a stocker in domestics but also filled in when craft people took lunch and breaks and cut fabric. Do not be afraid to go up front or to any employee and ask for help cutting, and if none arrives in a few minutes ask someone else or go to nearest dept. (here it is paint and sporting goods with counter and phone) and tell them you want to speak to a manager. Ours are good here and have several full time people in material and crafts.

Kath12 11-23-2013 07:52 AM

Pick up the phone and dial 0, then ask for assistance at the cutting table. It rings in to the fitting room (they answer the incoming calls) and they can page someone to come and help you. How do I know? I used to work at the fitting room before I retired.

Dial 1 800 Walmart and follow the prompts to leave a customer comment. I have been told many times by Walmart employees that the company is interested in customer comments,( just not employee suggestions,) so use your voice.

I ran into that situation, again, yesterday. I had my fabric laying on the counter. Walked down the center aisle to see if there was a worker in the vacinity. None to be found. Finally one came my way and I asked for fabric to be cut. She kept on walking and said she would call for help. After waiting almost 15 minutes, (I browsed the area while watching the counter) she came back from the direction whe went, and I asked if she had called for someone to help me. She said she would call again. Fortunately there was a worker walking shortly behind her heard me and came to the counter and told me she never heard her call for someone to come to the fabric counter. She appologized several times while cutting my fabric. I think Walmart has really reduced their staff all over the store, because you always have to go find someone to help you.

I truly dislike Walmart. When mine had a fabric dept I often went to the Photo Dept beside it and asked them to page someone.

LOL, they went insane. Still took a long time to get it priced. Just a bad situation, any way you cut it.

Speaking to the manger will not help

We have a new super center in Newport, AR that has a great fabric department. I've been there twice and both times there was en employee right there to cut my fabric. Oh, and because it's 20 miles one way and 30 miles another I don't go to WalMart often like I did when I lived in the city. But when I go I seldom get out for less than $100. I am so thankful for WM fabric.

charlotte37830 11-23-2013 02:49 PM

I will be happy to send you some 2.5" squares if you will pm me your address.

Gladmaker 11-23-2013 04:01 PM

I know that for a lot of you Walmart is the only choice for fabric.
I'm in Bentonville, AR about 2 miles from the home office and a super center. Several years ago Walmart had fabric and the other fabric stores went out of business. Then Walmart took out their fabric department and it made it very difficult to buy fabric. Then Hobby Lobby came in. Several quilt shops opened and Walmart brought back fabrics. Just in the last few months Hancocks opened close by. I refuse to buy fabric from Walmart and give the other shops my business. I can go into Hobby Lobby or Hancocks and there are always at least 2 people at the cutting counter.
The same goes for groceries and hardware. We have a very nice grocery store close which is a small local chain. I will drive by Walmart and go to the other store to buy groceries. There is a small hardware store about 5 miles from me that I will go to and receive great help instead of going to Walmart.

misseva 11-23-2013 04:09 PM

What Gladmaker said is true regarding buying locally. Our local Mad Butcher has sales each week and if you are a smart shopper you can buy from home folks as cheap as Walmart - many times cheaper. I only go to WM when I absolutely cannot get what I want in my hometown. We have one grocery store, one hardware store and a Dollar General (which is disgraceful), two drug stores and 3 gas stations.

Grandma Cindy 11-23-2013 08:21 PM

I pick up the house phone and ask the operator to overhead page someone to the cutting table, works every time.

psychonurse 11-24-2013 03:25 AM

I have gotten the telephone # to the store (s) when I walk in, and then call for assistance. I have also used the PA system if available.

qwkslver 11-24-2013 03:31 AM

Reading your posts reminds me why I don't stand in line to buy fabric any more. I order online and have been rarely disappointed. Just not worth my time waiting for someone to arrive and (usually slowly) cut the fabric for me.

I have called the main number of stores from my phone and asked them to send help since there didn't seem to be any workers in the store. Amazing how quick someone shows up in a panic. I'm just too old to put up with the "new" customer service. Google the number of the local store on your smart phone and dial away.

If you go to Grandma Joes on 32nd by the Rocking K RV park. She has scraps by the pound and Joanne's had Fat Quarters on Sales last week.
