Does it ever end!!!
Fabric, fabric, fabric, I have so much. I went to a estate sale that said it was a quilters dream. I went with the intention to look for notions and such. I said I didn't need any fabric. It wasn't the dream they had said, but they did have some fabric. So, I ignored my, "I don't need fabric" and bought some. I got a pack of 26 fat quarters and 4 pieces totaling 11 yards for five dollars. Five dollars!!! I didn't need fabric, but look how much I saved. Sick, sick, sick!!! Now it will be crammed in with the rest of the fabric which I have no room for. Later I went over to my mom's to show her my treasure. We had planned to go to this sale together, but she had to go to a doctors appointment with my dad. When she saw my treasure, she said, "lets go". Back I went and found a piece that was ten yards for five dollars! Didn't need anymore fabric, but look how much I saved! It's a sickness most of us quilters have and it's sick, sick, sick!!!! Does it ever end?

I sure hope not!! I love finding good deals at yard sales or thrift stores. I wouldn't have half of what I do if it weren't for them.

Start by sorting thru your fabric stash and see if there is anything you can give to a charity group who would be delighted with what you give them. They will be so grateful with anything you give.
I thought about going to this sale, but I'm clear on the other side of town, and I thought everything would be gone before I could get there. :0(
It is a sickness alright; but what a fun sickness.
I have a 'fabricholic' t-shirt that shows a women with a big stack of fabric walking into a fabricholic meeting saying, "Hi, I'm Jane, and I am a fabricholic", and the group of women are all saying, "Hi, Jane." I feel that I should replace the name 'Jane" with "Mary Ann". LOL |
I am not sure when it "ends" as I am still hoping someday I will stop with my fascination with acquiring more fabric. But some bargains are just too good to pass up. Now go sew something and you will feel better.
 LOL
I think it will only end when we are unable to get out and about.

I can't blame anyone for grabbing something like that even if they do have a ton of fabric
That's a really good deal! I couldn't afford to buy a whole stack like that in a fabric store-it's so expensive nowadays! I'm trying to build a stash I don't have that much just a couple of tote boxes full We don't get too many estate sales around here but the thrift store has been very good to me. :) If you have the space and you find a good deal more power to you! |
I wish it was closer I would go. How very fun to find fabrics at those prices! How could you not buy it? By the way, did you find any notions?
if it is a sickness...I don't want to ever get better!
I hope it never ends! I love my passion for fabric.
Lol, I never buy any fabric anymore, and is because I don't go looking lol...now if I happened at a sale like yours, how could I refuse? hahhahhahah
Celebrate getting a great deal!!!!
Boy, it's a good thing I live in the mountains and too far from that sale. A few years ago I went to a quilter's dream sale and I was first on the scene and I bought 50 yards of assorted pieces (large pieces) for fifty cents a yard. All were top quality. I have used most of it but still have a few treasures. You should have seen the look on hubby's face when I said I had just purchased so much fabric for $25! Great fun!
wow, you found a great sale and now have backing fabric too.
I hear Charity quilts calling you!!!
How could you have left that behind!!!
Just think of it as doing your bit for the economy. Happy sewing with your new haul. |
Consider sharing your blessing of a big stash it with other quilters. I have discovered in my guild that there are a number of quilters on limited budgets or retired and on fixed income who love to use "hand-me-down fabric". One turns every thing into quilts of valor and the other teaches 4H classes for budding quilters. It clears just a little from my stash, but it is an easy way to help someone who I know will use the fabric well.
I also recently went methodically through my stash and took out all of the fabric that I knew I would never in a million years put in a quilt. I took it to a quilt retreat in two big Rubberrmaid bins labeled FREE and .... I took home two empty bins. Some was used immediately that week-end and some of the final odds and ends went to someone who makes rag rugs. OK with me. It will turn that fabric into a useful piece for someone and not just sit in the bottom of a bin. |
Nothing gladdens my heart more than a good fabric deal, needed or not.
I know how that goes! I am sure between gifts, charity quilts, etc you will make good use of it!
I'm not a stash buyer so have a hard time relating. But it brings to mind a comment from a long ago boss whose wife would shop for whatever and come home 'look how much $$ I saved'. To which his standard answer became 'Stop saving me so much money!'.

I was at the garden store yesterday, talking with a women about how people just "WANT, WANT, WANT" without a need. She was asking me what I was getting and I told her, a gift for a lady that I take care of for her birthday (I had just picked up 2 small bird feeders for out side her room). She wanted to know how many plants I was getting, but I pointed out that I'm a garden recycler (she just thought that was great - she thought it was great that I didn't feel I needed to keep up with anyone else). What she didn't know - is that the back of my SUV was full of FABRIC!!!!! I can not pass up a good deal (when it comes to fabric - when my DH see more fabric he always says "How much did you save me this time"). When not paying full price or when upcycling fabric I feel great. I feel as if I'm saving fabric from not being loved, and I can turn it into something that someone will love. OK, I'm sick. But in the grand scheme of things, I spend very little on fabric and it makes me happy. I don't drink, smoke, do drugs, go on vacations, have expensive toys, drive fancy cars - so I have just one habit and that's fabric. So see it's not so bad?
:) :) That's nothing...I went to an estate sale and bought $75.00 worth of fabric......at $.50 a PIECE. Each piece was from 1/4 yard to 9 yards!!!!!!!! Yeah, I have WAY too much.......but I LOOOOOOOVE it!
What if there was a fabric famine? We're just making sure we have enough put away just in case!!
LOL, I so hear you and understand! A friend gave me a newspaper clipping about a quilting guild that was holding a collective yard sale with "tons of fabric and other quilting items". I knew better than to even go, so I just dropped the clipping into the trash when she wasn't looking.
I am so proud of myself for not going to that sale!!! I don't have the money to spend nor the space for storage. I recently donated a lot of non-quilting fabric to a craft group for women and teens with problems. The only thing I have a very hard time resisting is scrubs in unusual fabric. I just found this awesome one with dental stuff! How do you not get that? LOL |
I have very limited fabric storage space and it's pretty full but I just love the hunt!! I get a thrill from finding a great deal at a yard sale or thrift shop. Recently I removed some pieces from my shelves which I really don't like to make room for new stuff. I'm trying to sell it online but if I don't succeed, I'll donate it somewhere. At least the hunting is a fairly inexpensive hobby.
Hey! I am not spending money on drugs!!!! I went to a quilt store on Friday with friends. We had never been there before but it advertised "Aunt Grace quilt backs" (108" wide). I guess you can guess who added a pile to an already overflowing stash! I do sometimes clean out and donate but it seems to grow faster than my "weeding out". I sometimes wonder what I truly love...quilting or fabric!

OMG - me too!!! |
I am 76 and I still have it bad. When I go anywhere and there is fabric I head straight for it. I guess if I haven't got over it by now I never will. But who cares it is so much fun.
Yes, it will all end when we quit getting old and start getting cold, until just enjoy every minute, or should I say piece of it.
My DH would tell you that I have a sickness when it comes to fabric. When we first met I was on a tight budget so I didn't buy anything unless it was on sale; so he once told me that I'd buy an elephant if it were on sale - so while he was in Viet Nam, I sent him a small stuffed elephant and told him I'd found it on sale. LOL. I just like to think that I've been bitten by the quilting bug and that there is no known cure. I am glad you found such good deals and that you took your Mom back to the sale with you when she asked.
I, for one, hope it never ends! My DH is fully supportive of my fabric addiction! My hundreds of pieces are beautifully ruler folded and placed in color order on many IKEA shelves. My quilt studio looks like a beautiful continuing rainbow!!

"You say all this like it's a bad thing to accumulate fabric".
I read that no one expects a coin collector to use their coins or a stamp collector to use a stamp, so why should they expect a fabriholic to use all her fabric??? |
Sounds like a great deal and hard to pass up. I haven't heard of any deals like that around here. Although I never look for deals like that. I'm too busy trying to use up my very large stash.
But, what a fun sickness, no one gets hurt (unless by a falling bolt of fabric) I look at some of my acquisitions the same way the DNR does. I bring them home, then move them on to where there is a need. The "catch and release" policy of fishing.

I have a wall hanging on my sewing room wall that says "there is no such thing as too much fabric" lol. Every timr I buy fabric, that makes it ok. LOL
