Does this make you dizzy?

1 Attachment(s)
Does my new quilt top make you dizzy? I was enjoying the cheerfulness of it when my husband walked by and said it made him dizzy to look at it. And, you know, I think he is right. I am hoping to get over that feeling because I have been looking forward to making this top, with all of the different bandana colored fabrics.

So, does it make you dizzy?

My first look before I read your comment was "oh boy, that looks great!" It certainly does not make me dizzy. I love it!

daisydawg 10-10-2014 07:16 PM

I like it , so far I'm not dizzy!

Dina 10-10-2014 07:18 PM

Thanks, I feel better already. :) I will look at it with new eyes tomorrow...and maybe the dizzy feeling thing will have disappeared!

It is colorful and busy so maybe that's why it appears "dizzy". I like it .... so beautifu!

evelyn5269 10-10-2014 07:32 PM

Love it and your border fabric looks beautiful. Nice choice

I have motion sickness and I can see where it feels like it is making you dizzy. When I look at it, I feel like I'm getting sick to my stomach, a very common symptom of motion sickness. For me, there's no stop to the motion. Everything is in the same color tones with no order. It's just motion.

A lot of people will really love it and for some of us, it will actually make us feel physically sick. If this same quilt had black sashing between the crazy blocks, making it similar to a stained glass look, it would be calmer.

Edited to add: I, also, have problems with trying to make quilts with a lot of different colors in them. Unless I control something about them, either a sashing, or use the colors in the same rotation, they make me feel bad. I never thought about it being related to my motion sickness. Funny what we learn about ourselves, isn't it?

ljptexas 10-11-2014 02:39 AM

No, not at all.. Just looks 'puzzlely' to me. Great job. Love the colors.

ManiacQuilter2 10-11-2014 02:43 AM

I think it looks like a very charming crazy quilt perfect gift for a child. You do excellent work Dina.

HomekeepingGran 10-11-2014 03:02 AM

It doesn't make me dizzy at all. Interesting...

tapper 10-11-2014 03:43 AM

I like it.
To me it says 'different' and I am always drawn to different.

jetayre 10-11-2014 04:03 AM

I like it....but to put a pop to it and to break the "motion sickness for others maybe a solid dot, or square actually 5 placed would do it. one in middle of each corner blocks and one in middle. could be applique.

GingerK 10-11-2014 04:17 AM

Well, yes and no. It is very bright and busy. My eyes can't seem to find any place to rest, which could make a person feel dizzy. My DD would love this quilt. Altho I have made a couple for her and gifts, I have never cared for the magic tile block, because it seems to have no rhyme or reason, and this is magic tile without the narrow sashing between each piece and block.

You did a very nice job on it--didn't Fons and Porter do something very similar on their last TV show? I think people won't feel as dizzy when it is laid on a bed--or when they are cozy under it.

Homespun 10-11-2014 05:01 AM

I like it...no dizziness here!

bearisgray 10-11-2014 05:11 AM

I like the pink inner border you used. It looks like a crazy quilt to me. It does not make me dizzy.

Rose S. 10-11-2014 05:20 AM

No, it doesn't make me dizzy....but the funny thing, I can almost see where it might some people. But I would be happy to take it off your hands....

Dina 10-11-2014 05:24 AM

Again, thanks for the comments. Even though it does cause some to feel dizzy, I still feel good about it. :) I don't normally make quilts with a lot of colors and will probably go back to my favorite....shades of purple...

I love all the colors! I was thinking that maybe the very slight "dizzy factor" might be all the medium sized prints. It might help in the future if you include some solid fabrics, or mini print blenders. That is what you would use for windowing, but I think if you don't do windowing putting the solids in your piecing would probably help create a resting place for the eye. PLEASE do not give up on all the wonderful colors! It looks great!!!!!

GemState 10-11-2014 07:20 AM

Love it! Wonderful colors.

Yes, the prints are all the same....bandana....only different colors. It seemed like a much better idea in my head. :)

I love it! I think it actually just gives a bit of an "illusion" effect. Absolutely love the colors. Can you give us the name of the pattern? Please!

It is called a puzzle quilt. It is "supposed" to be made from 9 fat quarters. As far as I know, my sister created the pattern. I learned it from a workshop she taught. I have the pattern on my computer, and if you PM me with your email address, I will send it to you.

Yes, there was PBS segment showing a "happy crazy quilt" or something like it. Looks like fun!

BTW, Dina, I like your quilt!

Minnesewta-sam 10-12-2014 04:20 AM

Dizzy- NO. I like it. Thanks for sharing.

Reba'squilts 10-12-2014 04:26 AM

I did not get dizzy! Love your choices!

DonnaPBradshaw 10-12-2014 04:31 AM

I made a quilt that was very busy and this reminds me of it. I named it " Coat of many colors" in honor of Joseph in the Bible. My Aunt didn't like it and wanted me to change out a border to make it less busy. I kept the border and made a different quilt for her grandson. Some people just don't like to see too much color on a quilt or whatever you want to call it.

Momala24 10-12-2014 04:52 AM

I think it is perfect just the way it is! Love it.

Carol34446 10-12-2014 04:52 AM

Very pretty quilt, only thing I noticed is one block has 2 pcs of yellow and one has no yellow, but it is very pretty and does not make me dizzy. Love yellow so that made me notice it. Great job.

Debbie C 10-12-2014 04:53 AM

I think it's very cheerful! I'd use it outdoors in summertime, too! It makes me happy!

nanna-up-north 10-12-2014 05:06 AM

One of my favorite quilts is a red and white 9-patch I made many years ago. I say make it whatever colors you want. After all, it is your quilt.

marymay 10-12-2014 05:07 AM

Love the colors and quilt

JanieH 10-12-2014 05:20 AM

I really like it. I also think that when it is laying flat on a bed that the "motion" or "busyness" won't be as intense for some.

youngduncan 10-12-2014 05:23 AM

Dizzy? No! Very happy and cheerful? Yes!!

Yeah, I noticed this too. Decided not to let it bother me. :) But you are right, there should have been some yellow in each block. I must have mixed up my pieces when I was ironing or trimming....
