Was just searching for help on my machine looping on bottom. Read about using dollar bill to clean, how do you do that. I've never heard of that tec. My problem was coats & clarke thread. Replaced with el cheapo thread from dollar store, no more loops. Note to self go to store & get decent thread. Of course the coats was on sale & I bought 5 of them.

You just "floss" the dollar bill between the tension disks. Supposedly the oil in the bill helps grab any lint, and the paper doesn't create any lint, so it cleans them up well.

mzmama 05-29-2011 02:30 PM

I did not know this.

shawnemily 05-29-2011 02:39 PM

Hmmmm I didn't know that either!

Kat Sews 05-29-2011 02:51 PM

That would work. I just use dental floss.

eastermarie 05-29-2011 02:55 PM

I learned something new.

M.E.H. 05-29-2011 03:22 PM

Thank you for the info. :D

grayma 05-29-2011 03:24 PM

That is a great tip. Thank you.

Jingle 05-29-2011 04:12 PM

Great tip, I always wondered how we were to clean, other than blowing on it. Tahnks.

tjradj 05-29-2011 04:14 PM

Great tip, however I'd have to use a fiver as here in Canada the ones are a coin - a loonie, as is the two dollar coin - a toonie. The five dollar bill is the smallest I've got.

luv-e 05-29-2011 04:41 PM

Learn something new

Monika 05-29-2011 04:54 PM

I never heard of that. Great tip. Next time I'll try that. :)

sewgull 05-29-2011 05:17 PM

Cheap thread usually has lots of lint, I don't use it.

ncredbird 05-29-2011 06:29 PM

I took a class on maintenance and cleaning of a Featherweight and they taught us to use bridal tulle for the same purpose. I use it to clean all my machines. This is like very fine netting. It is just abrasive enough to get stuff out but not so much as to damage anything. You could use just a little WD 40 or Triflow on it if you wanted. You cut it in a 1 inch strip as long as you need and essentially floss with it. Ann in TN

So are you talking about a featherweight or modern day machine. If you are talking about a modern day machine then I have a stupid question. Where are the tension discs on a modern machine?

Thanks for this advice.

All Thumbs 05-30-2011 07:44 AM

Thanks for a wonderful tip! I think I will give my older machine an expensive thrill with a twenty dollar bill, maybe it will clean better than my old one dollar bill! LOL Learn something every day on this Board. Even though I am older than dirt and sewed my finger to a treadle machine when I was a small child, there is always a tip worth remembering.

Scrap Happy 05-30-2011 07:45 AM

I just learned something new. Thanks!

Kathy9052 05-30-2011 08:36 AM

A business card will work too. Both are lint free. Several years ago when we owned a motorcycle shop, I learned to use a business card to clean dirt or carbon buildup from the points on a motorcycle when the engine wasn't running smooth. Same principle - another use!

i use coats and clark and do not have a problem with it , but there was a talk on here not to long ago , how some people did not have such good luck with it , , buy a roll and try it i think it depends on the machine and the person

cherrio 05-30-2011 09:43 AM

uh, where are tension discs?

cherrio 05-30-2011 09:43 AM
