In the spirit of the season, I took 20 child sized quilts today to a local shelter for abused women and children. They were simple, lap sized quilts, but you would have thought they were made of gold. The staff was so appreciative, it made it all worthwhile. And with that kind of appreciation, they can count on receiving them next year too. It felt so good to be able to give each child a new "blankie" for Christmas! I feel blessed to be able to do it.

You have the true spirit of Christmas. You made some children very happy. God Bless you!

quilt addict 12-08-2010 11:46 AM

That is a wonderful thing. My guild supports a local shelter with quilts for the kids. They get it when they arrive to decorate their and get to keep it. We donated about 200 last month. Unfortunately, the statistics the representative gave us was they had 360 children come through last year.

She has wonderful stories of what it means to the children. So keep it up if you can.

barbrdunn 12-08-2010 06:39 PM

Thank you all for the kind words..you are all very nice. My post was not to boast, but to share the sense of appreciation that I received from the shelter. I was brought to tears. I have donated many quilts through my local guild, but you never see the faces of appreciation from those who receive them, unless you deliver them personally. I have only delivered quilts once before and was met with such non-appreciation I was very hurt. I delivered 12 quilts and the gal didn't even look at what I was donating nor ask my name before she took them to the back room. Sometimes I never knew where my donation quilts went after giving them to the guild either. Giving to this shelter was such a positive experience, I can't wait to get started on next year's!

Your loving gift may have far reaching good effects that you will never know about. You may have passed on not just physical comfort but the comfort of a child feeling they are worthwhile enough for someone to spend their time to make something for him or her. God bless you!

kim_s 12-08-2010 09:28 PM

What a great thing to do. I think you have inspired many of us to make similar donations.

Blessings,
Kim

It is so easy to forget what great things we can all do to make the world a better place! I have lots of scraps, and this is something I can do as well. Thanks for the inspiration :-)

Once I donated a batch of quilts to a local shelter and was met with the same indifference as you. The gal was happy to ask my name for purposes of giving a receipt but really didn't care what was in the large bag. I never saw the reaction of the recipients either, but that has not stopped me from donating quilts to them. I just figured they were too busy and overworked and would appreciate them when they had time to open the bag. I agree that often to feel really appreciated for our gift of time and energy is a big deal.

What a great way to give at Christmas. I think I will work on quilts this year, using the flannel I got on sale at Joann's on Black Friday. I bought enough to make quite a few quilts. What size did you make? I'm new and want to make the easiest most economical quilts I can. I don't know how to actually quilt, so I will probably have to tie. Don't know how to do that either but will figure out. If you have any good advise it would be appreciated. What about ragged, would that be good.

Ann L 12-09-2010 05:10 AM

What a great way to give back. I usually need a reason to make a quilt, sounds like the one of the best reasons to me. Thanks for sharing and planting an idea.
