Eleanor Burns came to my house....WOW

Just finished piecing 3 scrappy quilts. Looked around my sewing area...on the floor I see various sizes of scraps, lots of dif colors, thread tails, rug under my chair is asqew (sp){{can't spell I think you know what I mean}}}, probably a few dust bunnies too. Sewing table well...scraps there too. Just a mess.

Would like to know how she got in? Doors are always locked. Don't remember giving her my address. Has she ever come to visit you?

Inquiring minds need to know.

Stitchnripper 11-17-2013 09:45 AM

Haha!!! Don't I wish!! I think I heard her say that she started doing that because one of her early producers told her she was taking too much time trying to keep her space clean, so that was her solution. She also said early on she had to clean it all up at the end!!

lynnie 11-17-2013 10:21 AM

I think she lives in my closet, no materr how much I clean after I sew, there are strings and little snips all over.

NanaCsews2 11-17-2013 10:46 AM

When we visited her store in Paducah, we saw a few bags of very small scraps for sale. We were told by one of the salesladies that those bags are the actual scraps she tosses. I am too tidy to notice if she has visited my home, although I would pull up a comfy chair for her to sit awhile if she did.

crafty pat 11-17-2013 10:49 AM

I think she must spend a lot of time in my sewing room.

Lori S 11-17-2013 11:56 AM

I have adopted the Eleanor Burns method! I find it easier to clean up all those threads and snips at the end of a sewing day , rather than trying to keep up. Oh sometimes I take a break and tidy , but I let the snips fall where they may. I think El was on to something when she started just tossing.

dunster 11-17-2013 12:31 PM

Isn't that what the floor is there for, to catch the scraps and threads???

Nammie to 7 11-17-2013 01:35 PM

I'm with you guys -- when I'm sewing, neat goes out the window. I do try to straighten up a bit at the end of the day and do clean everything up at the end of each project. It still can all get away from me!

That's what I've always used mine for!

Milli 11-17-2013 07:44 PM

I clean after every project time is wasted cleaning during a project.
that my story and I'm sticking to it.

Stiffchick 11-17-2013 08:12 PM

I keep an old plastic quart ice cream bucket next to me and toss my scraps and snips in it as I can. It works very well when I am EPP, or hand sewing/ quilting. I do sometimes use the Elenor method, but I sew at my dining room table and if I leave stuff around to much the cats get a hold of it. Then it's just a bigger mess.

Annaquilts 11-17-2013 08:24 PM

She is a hoot. I love talking with her and she would be welcome in my studio any day. She can also throw all the scraps around that she would want to.

SandyinZ4 11-17-2013 08:35 PM

She (or her clone) definitely visits my sewing room. I vacuum the little bits and pieces up about once a week. Otherwise, who cares. Once in a while, the kitty drags one out to the other parts of the house stuck to his fur but I can handle that. Besides, who wants a neat sewing room. Then DH might think I don't ever use it. LOL!

Jim 11-17-2013 08:46 PM

We love Eleanor, my wife and I would love to share an afternoon sewing and listening to her stories. We would be so enamored by them . I'd even clean up her mess. As for mine it gets scooped to the edge of the table where I have a bag waiting for the scraps of fabric and threads. I still get threads and bits and pieces but I clean them after each sewing session

pelikanbus62 11-18-2013 02:49 AM

I love Eleanor Burns. She might have visited my place a few times.

Gladys 11-18-2013 03:37 AM

LOL that's my kind of quilter.

mjhaess 11-18-2013 04:35 AM

LOL...I think she visits all of us from time to time.....

I think she bribes my dogs with biscuits. Because that is the only way she can get past them...:)

Grannyh67 11-18-2013 05:05 AM

m cutting out and something falls I for sure stop and go out of my way to pick it up. I think I have a problem. I hate things out of their place, lol....all this being said I am not that picky with the rest of the house just my sewing room. I really try to keep it neat, I straightened it up after I finish for the day and and even if I take a break I tidy up. Hate messy. Like I said wish I wasn't like this. I'm working on it though.

coopah 11-18-2013 05:07 AM

Eleanor is welcome here any time. She'd find most of her books and patterns on the shelves, so she'd probably feel comfortable. Plus the threads, scraps, and dust bunnies might be familiar sights! There's a door on my sewing room for a reason.

quiltinghere 11-18-2013 05:18 AM

Hahahahaha! that was a good one!

"She" doesn't come to visit my large sewing/quilting area. I have at least 6 small trash cans from the dollar store. I have one at each station that I snip/cut at and one or two in a common walkway. To use them I just have to drop my hand and it's in a can! LOVE IT!

If I didn't do the trash cans, I'd have to cut away allllll those threads from the vacuum beater bar more often than I do...and I don't like taking that thing apart, wasting time doing snipping and then beating my knuckles trying to get it back together!

I'm with Nan. My sewing room is NOT neat, but I have containers for tiny scraps at strategic places. I also don't like having to dig all those threads out of the vacuum cleaner's beater bars.

Aurora 11-18-2013 05:35 AM

I am lazy and have no desire to sweep the floor, so I use the trash can or my thread catcher.

cpfrog 11-18-2013 05:58 AM

She's been here too! "Eleanor" does get around... Hahhahaha

stillclock 11-18-2013 06:00 AM

i think there are the remains of about 4 projects mounting a coup on my sewing room floor right now...

i am so glad i am good company here!

EB is just as fun in person as she is on her show. She is a delightful person making her audience participate in her presentation. She was promoting her book Star Across America who's blocks are named after prominent women. When she asked who this block was named after, I kept replying Eleanor Roosevelt. I eventually won a campaign button that says EB for president. It always makes me smile.

dpparris 11-18-2013 06:16 AM

Eleanor Burns visits me often. I catch myself saying out loud just get rid of it as I toss scraps. You know you watch too much you tube when your husband ask you if you are Eleanor Burns! LOL

BettyGee 11-18-2013 06:22 AM

I clean as I go and that doesn't always keep things neat. The larger scraps get put in a scraps basket to cut later, but when I look at what I saved sometimes I think I was a dope for saving such small pieces.

Lori, you described me to a T. My OCD personality was costing me way too much time just picking up snips & scraps til I finally started using the "Eleanor" method. So much easier to just sweep or vacuum when my project is finished or when I can't stand it any longer. I do like to start my day with a clean floor though but have learned to live with scraps for awhile. I always like to put my tools away, too, but I'm trying to resist that urge now. LOL

Much as I would like to toss my scraps a la Eleanor Burns, I have to keep my scraps off the floor. I have 2 "very helpful" cats who would pick them up and play with them and leave them all over the house.

My thoughts too!!!!

dianeinsterling 11-18-2013 08:19 AM

I find it amazing where threads and scraps turn up!:)

fireworkslover 11-18-2013 08:33 AM

One bad side effect when you leave threads on the floor and have a chair with wheels, is that all those threads get stuck in your chair wheels. It's a chore to get them out, since most wheels don't come apart these days. A needle-nose pliers & a seam ripper are the tools you have to use. Hope you don't get sore fingers!

Tink's Mom 11-18-2013 10:22 AM

I thought she lived here! I need to get a different color carpet...this one shows way to many threads..

MargeD 11-18-2013 11:43 AM

I do believe that she sneaks in at night to spread scraps and threads everywhere. I was selling Bow Tucks bags, as well as other quilted items at a craft fair on Sat., and I kept picking threads off them all day long. LOL. Those pesky threads follow you everywhere. I do like her seemingly carefree attitude about scraps and threads, she has a great sense of humor.

HouseDragon 11-18-2013 12:05 PM

*LOL* I used to obsessively put every tiny unusable fabric piece in the trash basket next to the table. One day my DH had moved it elsewhere. I'd just watched Eleanor on RFD channel and thought "What the heck!"

How liberating! Now Eleanor visits me every night. :D

We have marble tile floors, so the cleanup is a breeze: a couple of minutes once a week and the whole quilting room floor is clean ... a few more minutes and the upstairs floors are all vacuumed.

Did I mention that the first thing we did when we retired is rip out every dang carpet in the house? :)

BuzzinBumble 11-18-2013 12:53 PM

You all are so funny with your posts here.. Thanks for the many laughs you've brought to my day.
we had a cat who compulsively ate string. He cleaned off a whole fishing pole once and devoured my daughters violin bow. It is a wonder this habit did not kill him. And our dogs seem to find pins, even when I think I have been extremely careful. So that has sometimes given me scares, but otherwise I won't sweat the small bits of fabrics if they miss the trash cans.

wordpaintervs 11-18-2013 01:54 PM

Julie, I love what you wrote. Eleanor not only came to my house but she took over every room in it. GGL

Judie 11-18-2013 03:17 PM

Is THAT what happens!! I didn't realize it was Eleanor... Here all this time I thought it was just that my sewing room was so excitied to see me that it EXPLODED with joy! I know everything is always out waiting for me to come in for a visit. :-) Yikes!
