Sorry, this may be a dumb question. I'm picturing an all white block quilt, maybe different color sashing and each block being embroidered and quilted around the perimeter of the quilt.
Would this work? I know technically it would, but do people actually use embroidery as the quilting?

amma 08-02-2011 06:48 AM

There are many embroidery designs made just for this purpose :D:D:D

SWEETPEACHES 08-02-2011 06:55 AM

hmmmm Apparently I need to buy an embroidery machine. So, you can embroid thru three layers, right?

crashnquilt 08-02-2011 07:03 AM

Yes you can embroider thru the quilt sandwich with an embroidery machine. I do it all the time on my Janome 300E. I use a sticky back stabilizer in the hoop and then stick my quilt piece over that to quilt.

SWEETPEACHES 08-02-2011 07:12 AM

Wow. This sounds perfect! Thank you. I'd love to see a quilt done if anyone has pics they'd share.

Candace 08-02-2011 07:34 AM

I do this all the time. Here's one I did on my Bernina 830 using an embroidery design. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-83293-1.htm

Tcharlie 08-02-2011 08:21 AM

Yep, it would wok, I do it all the time!! I do it just to the quilt top prior to being quilted together.

SWEETPEACHES 08-02-2011 08:30 AM

So... no basting?? Sweet!

Thank you for that picture, Candace.

Wow I have an embroidery machine and never thought to try this - and thanks for asking - I learned something new too!

PamB8s 08-02-2011 11:08 AM

I'm new to embroidery and I'm loving this idea woohooooo

hobbykat1955 08-02-2011 12:03 PM

Absolutely...that's why I spent all that money on my emb machine.

SWEETPEACHES 08-02-2011 12:15 PM

What kind do you have HobbyCat - or anyone else who does this.
I saw one on sale at Joannes a couple months ago, but didn't pay much attention to it bc I'm a quilter - not an embroider-er! ha, little did I know

moonwork42029 08-02-2011 12:28 PM

So...you have to use the stabilizer on each section also?

Can you use something cheaper than the store stabilizer like interfacing or something? The stabilizer we get from the sewing shop is way expensive for a full size quilt.

Would "redwork" items also work for this since they are a one color project?

Wow this is going to be cool (hopefully)

digitalartquilts 08-02-2011 02:00 PM

I make embroidery designs specifically for this purpose. They are redwork style designs with no jumps. I do it all the time.

Julia, do you do the embroidery and them make a quilt? Or do you sandwich your quilt and then do embroidery

hobbykat1955 08-02-2011 03:59 PM

I have a combo sewing/emb machine Husqvarna Viking SE...Also have a emb machine only EM10 which is also Husq.
You can emb both ways...Just the top using stablizer and then sandwiching...I buy my stabalizer (Tear Away by Pellon) at Joann's...1.99 yd use coupon and buy the whole bolt 15 yds.
If you embro after you sandwich I use the same color thread in my bobbin since the design will then be on both sides and you don't have to use stablizer because your thickness of the sandwich stablizes it...

digitalartquilts 08-02-2011 04:02 PM

make the quilt first

Someday, maybe someday, I have one of those enticing embroidery machines. Until then, I will just drool over all of yours.

Isn't sticky back hard to remove all the paper from the back side? Just curious as I've never tried it. Thanks

labtechkty 08-03-2011 03:28 AM

I have read on other posts that if you want to use your emb machine to quilt that you should have a large area to lay the quilt on so it doesn't drag on the machine..alot of people say they place their emb machine on the floor to keep this from happening and they have great results...I haven't tried this yet but will have to!!

Great tip!

ka9sdn 08-03-2011 03:51 AM

I do it all the time on my Janome 11K. If you use a stablizer just for the block you can use any stablizer you like. If you are doing a 3 layer you can use washaway and just pin on your block. There are a lot of quilt patterns you can buy to use on blank blocks too. Just have fun.

js3830 08-03-2011 04:36 AM

I have been buying on color thread designs for this purpose. Now I know how to get them done. You guys are great.

mimiknoxtaylor 08-03-2011 04:41 AM

I did use emb. as the quilting on a pirate quilt for a grandson. Worked great. Yes, I made the sandwich 1st

jitkaau 08-03-2011 04:50 AM

I've seen lots of quilts done this way.The ones I personally like best are done on dark fabric.I guess I like the impact on the dark background.

VickyOH 08-03-2011 05:22 AM

No need to buy embroidery machine, unless you really want to. I will just say two words--Crabapple Hill. If you like to have a hand project to take with you, check out their website.

I do this often. I do hand-embroidery on the white, inside block, and do log cabin-type strips around it. I usually do these as baby quilts. Then, I quilt in the ditch, which is close enough to the embroidery to stabilize it all.

Dretha 08-03-2011 06:06 AM

I have a nine needle embroidery machine so I will also have to try it on a quilt.

nhlady52 08-03-2011 06:20 AM

Yes I do it quite often mostly for baby quilts

Eloise 08-03-2011 08:31 AM

I do hand embroidery and then make the pcs of material into quilts! I love to do hand embroidery BUT a lot of machine programs are ou there and they are beautiful! I know you will do just fine! ENJOY1

Mary L Booth 08-03-2011 08:39 AM

I would love to, but the quilt won't fit under the arm of my brother embroidery machine.

I quilt all 3 layers also, but I don't use any stabilizer I just hoop the quilt ... I don't like trying to remove all the stabilizer, and I have never had good luck with sticky back ones, can't seem to get all of it off. Good luck on your project.

Glory 08-03-2011 11:05 AM

If it is a simple design for quilting or redwork, you can quilt with it. If it is a regular embroidery design, it will be very stiff where the design is. I made a lap quilt in plain fall colors and did a simple straight quilting and then went back and quilted random falling leaves. They was stiff, but far apart and looked beautiful

I think the original poster was asking about quilting in the hoop via an embroidery machine....not embroidery per se.
