I'm still using an earlier version, typically for me the problem is that I am in a line drawing and not a color placing mode, like on the snap-part of my block diagram.

Are you trying to color a block, or are you on quilt layout and trying to fill in color in setting squares, lattice, etc?

I would like to change a photo into a paper pieced pattern in EQ8.

Is this possible?

Where do I start and do you know of any tutorials I can follow?

The quick answer is yes. Create a new block. Then click on the Tracing image tab on the top left Choose Import Image, Then crop if needed and click OK. I try to get my image straight and cropped before I open EQ as the "tools" inside EQ (imho) are not as good as other programs that I use. From there you can adjust the density of the image so that you can see the lines you are drawing. Then return to the drawing tools tab and go for it..

I read a few recent threads and see there’s a few EQ users. I found unopened EQ 5 and 6 versions and bought them as part of a lot.

I know EQ is up to V8 now. Are there huge differences between 6 and 8? I’m wondering if I should wait for a good sale on EQ8 or upgrade from the 6.

If you go directly to the EQ8 site itself, you'll be able to glean a lot of information about the changes, especially from EQ7 to EQ8. I have recently purchased EQ8 myself and am still studying and trying my hand at simpler things. It's quite impressive.

Based on my limited experience, I'd highly recommend going right to EQ8, then you won't have to "unlearn" anything and you'll have the latest and greatest.

Oh, I forgot one thing: they often have a sale and/or an introductory offer for a discounted purchase price. That's how I bought mine and received almost $50 off the price.

The difference between 5 and 6 is pretty much a redesign of the software. After that the changes seem to be more gradual, but I was really happy with some of the "fixes" that happened in EQ8. I started with 6, but I have the Dear Jane software, which is based on 5. I upgrade as soon as a new version comes out and have not been disappointed, but I use my EQ a lot. Before buying it anywhere, check out the price on quiltinaday. They usually have the best prices on new software, but I don't know how their prices on upgrades compare. At this point I'm looking forward to EQ9, whenever it comes out.

Something else to consider. While the earlier versions would likely work, I doubt EQ has updated them or still offers much in the way of support, given that's pretty much SOP for software developers. You might contact EQ and explain what you've got and see if they would honor the $179 upgrade fee from 6 to 8, which wold be better than the $235 fee. I noticed the other day they offered 25 percent off the software. I bought it for my wife and while she's slowly working her way around it, I decided to play with it and found that it's a fun way to pass the time while in isolation.

More things to consider. EQ6 is not compatible with Windows 10. And the licensing rules for 6 were different. As I understand it, you will need to be able to show that you have a license for 6 before you can upgrade to 8. That shouldn't be a problem if your EQ6 was not previously opened. Rob is right that you should talk to EQ Support before deciding what to do.
