I got me a june taylor mat a few month ago and is the worst I ever got, going back to fiskars or olfa

Leave it on your table and place a large Olfa mat on top

I have two tables on risers that I put together side-by-side in the garage. The I made what I thought was a great addition - I covered a sheet of plywood in flannel to put on top of the tables to lay out my quilts to sandwich. After I tried pinning my first quilt I realized my mistake. I started gathering old cutting mats which I turned over and laid on top of the flannel covered board - then I could tape the backing to the mats and continue with the sandwich! Voila!!!!! Another use for old mats.

I have looked at my Mom's mat , and it has REALLY big grooves in it as she uses the lines on the mat for the cutting line. It no longer heals and she has the same issue with blades. But I just can not seem to get her to buy or use a new mat she Says "there still some life in that mat". |
I'm sure ALL Olfa mats are "self-healing".

I have tried a few different brands of mats and will now only buy the Olfa brand. They last longer as well as heal better. I have a large mat made by United Notions and hate it. Threads get inbedded into and you can see all of the cuts I have made.

I used to use the lines on the mats for cutting, but felt it was not real accurate. So, I turned the mat over - no lines on the back, and taught myself to use only the ruler to cut by. The back lasts a long time, cause you are not cutting in the same spot over and over. Also, I only use Olfa green mats and yellow cutters.

I soak my self healing(green mats) in a tub of warm water twice a year. Makes them just like new.
