Fabric Collecting and Storage Ideas

Please post your ideas here for all of us to enjoy. Also we love to see pictures of how you store your fabric.

I am surfing the net to find some cool ideas and thought I would ask all of you for your ideas. Let's have a party!

I use shoe cubbies I found at lowes...

I am working on getting my fabric into cubes that I bought at KMart. 9 cubies in each one. I bought 3 but have room for one more in my cupboard if needed. It's going to take me awhile. Unfortunately I have projects needing to be fnished for a baby shower next weekend and a quilt for my grandsons birthday the following week. Would like to get it done so he can take it to college in Sept. If this post is still out there when done I will be sure to post pictures.

I have one for 1930's, Two for FQ's, one for lights (white, tan, beige)..

If you have a closet to spare lol. I built three book cases from K-mart and put them in the back of a closet. It holds tons of fabric all organised. The door had to come off the closet for this.

In the front of the closet I put a rod for hanging clothes, way up to the top, so the closet is still usable. There is still lots of room in front of the cases, so I put a long bench and stuff can go on that too. I didn't really loose a closet by doing this as only the back wall is being used. The clothes rod is at the very top of the closet so I can easily see the fabric if needed. I have other places that I stash fabric too.

Above the cases is lots of space so I put board over the cases and the large bolts and backing and painted fabric are stored up there.

I have an 8 by 6 cabinet, all shelved and loaded with fabric in the doll and quilt room....I have two dressers full of fabric.

Everything is out of the way and in order. I can't deal with stuff everywhere, it confuses me.

In the studio, there are at least three large bins full of fabric too and two bins of decorator swatches. these bins are labled and stored under a table or stacked up in a corner so I don't loose much space. I'm happy and I use all my fabrics all the time.

I know where everything is. When I am doing a project like the snake river now, there are two piles of fabric laying out on the trunk and table and what ever is left goes back where it belongs lol, as the next project will be different, it might be a doll etc. lol

I also use the sterilite 3 drawers on rollers ( i take off the rollers) and clear shoeboxes I can find on sale for less than $1 for my accuquilt cut outs..

I have these 3 drawers in various widths all over my room for crumbs, strips less than 5in, longer than 5in but less than10in, fabric pieces larger than 6x6 but less than a FQ.. 2 in strips by WOF separated by color, etc..

Not the best photo, but my husband gave me two bookshelves he was no longer using that I stacked my fabric into. They have glass doors, so I can see what I am looking for and it keeps the dust and kitty hair off the fabric.

What I noticed is the clipboards with different projects on the wall - what a brilliant idea!

yea thats for my ' I wanna make these someday!' patterns.. My father in law was a Head football coach so we had TONS of clipboards in his office so I 'borrowed' them.. (ignore the chips ahoy- must of been a bad day!) lol..

My (future) idea for storage is to get an accuquilt and cut any extra pieces to a uniform size for specific scrap quilts. I don't maintain a stash per se but have leftovers from projects. I have 3 containers from Target to hold scraps and ongoing projects. Works for me. If I had the scraps precut, i would be more likely to actually make that scrap quilt!

lots of neat ideas :) we're moving (this weekend actually) so all of the quilting stuff is packed and ready to go. Actually, I have it stacked and labled all together by the door to go first so it can't accidentally get lost lol :)

Everyone has such neat ideas! i wish I had room for the shoe cubbies. Right now, the fabrics I have sorted are in a pantry, which covers almost one wall and 2 closets. Not sure where the fabrics still in totes will go, lol.

Those are really shoe cubbies?? I have a shoe cubbie but it seems so narrow.

I have a wire cubicle unit which I'm not particularly fond of, but have no other option at the moment. I do love the cubbie idea!

Nintendo DS shelving unit. Sorry its a mess...I did have it better organized before I started taking out all my greens for prewashing and all of my wallhanging fabrics to the other display unit.

Smaller display unit for stained glass wallhanging fabric. Not sure if its hard to read, but I wrote the name of the wallhanging (or more specifically the character in the wallhanging) above each cubbie hole.

Yes, that IS a box of Raisin Bran. You know how some people live out of their car? Well, I live out of my bedroom (eat, sleep, entertain myself, quilt, etc). I tend to keep some of my non-refrigerated boxed food in my room as my family has a tendency of eating my food (labels or "special spots" do not deteer them). lol.

I am trying to organize stash , so I have found the three plastic drawers with wheels, at wal mart , which were on sale last year. Had another set, and found a couple that had a missing drawer. I also got some empty tubs, which yarn was stored, the yarn was taken to a place the ladies crochet for the hospital and nursing homes. I have 3 tubs to put my larger fabric in.

I have made up my mind to organize the fabric and put my sewing room in some sort of order(HUH???) am I kidding myself? well I am going to give it a try anyway. and when I do get through I will send a picture of my "organized" sewing room.

and as for lovetooquilt, yeah that looks like mine at this time. remember a clean room means a broken sewing machine.

Sorry, but I can't put my material in open shelves, my husband will see how much fabric I have!!

At Lowe's??? Is that what they are called - "cubies". I keep buying fabric and my husband asks me when am I going to start sewing.

I have one question. The pictures of all these wonderful "cubes" with fabric make me drool for sure. Everything is folded so neatly and so organized. However, what to you do with your scraps. I don't know of any quilter that doesn't have them - yet they never show up in these type of pictures.

Here's my "studio" in tidier days ... there are now two more machines in here and a whole lot more fabric. I also do statuary repair and so there are quite a few sitting on the shelves as well.

I can relate!

I purchased 3 plastic containers at WalMart, with 3 wide draws each. Each draw has a different color fabric. I did have an open bookcase but with these containers the fabric will stay dust free (somewhat)

Yep. I turn my shoe cubbies sideways and I also take out some of the "sections" (mine has removable pieces) to make bigger spaces for my yardage pieces.

Here's a pic of my organized scraps. I couldn't find the right size baskets, so I cut boxes to fit in the bottom shelves of the shoe cubbies and covered the boxes in contact paper. I wrapped the scraps on smaller pieces of comic book boards.
