as others have said this is a cathederal windows--they were made by hand and were VERY popular in the late 60s and early 70s--I have always wanted to makeone but never have--I did do a small sample in a Church Womens class many years ago. The joy is that it is all finished when you sew the blocks together

It's a beautiful Cathedral Window and does not require any batting. Love making them while watching television as it can be made totally by hand.

I was also curious about the cathedral windows pattern. I found this tutorial for a cathedral windows pincushion and made one just to see how the pattern works. It's a great low-commitment project if you want to try one.
Tutorial is here: http://gogokim.blogspot.com/2011/12/...-tutorial.html |
It's only fair to give a heads up about the cathedral windows. It makes for extremely sore fingers when pushing through many layers of fabric.

Oh I love making the Cathedral Window Quilt. I have made 2, gifted the queen size to my daughter for Christmas. She loved it. I also made a pillow, Christmas ornament, and several yard stick holders for gifts.
I assembled mine into blocks of 4 squares and set the squares together into rows. My goal was to make 1 block each evening after work, it was relaxing and finished in less time than you think. The beautiful part is when you stitch the last block, your quilt is finished, ready to use!! |
The tutorial by Eddie is very interesting. I think I am going to try one like this soon.

I made a machine cathedral and it was not hard. I did put batting & backing. Years ago many vintage quilts did not have batting.

beautiful cathedral window! Time consuming and great way to use up scraps

My mom made one of these by hand--I remember how LONG it took (I was a kid--an hour seemed like a long time! :)), but it was beautiful when she finished.

It is a cathedral window and being made in the 60s does not qualify for vintage. I'm 73 and grew up in the sixties so to me vintage is the 20s and 30s. We had a young man install the connection for our new flat panel TV that our son bought for us and he said "Suppose you want to watch an old movie, like one from the 70s?" MY DH and I broke out laughing at that one.
