Fascinated by this vintage quilt!
 

Can anyone help me identify what type of quilt this is?? It is unlike anything I have seen. One of the most interesting thing is there does not appear to be any batting it it. Seriously. It isn't that the batting dissolved like some of my old quilts...it was never there. It is however extremely heavy. There is no binding...the edges appear to be part of the "flap" of the top square (if that makes sense?)
The quilt belongs to a friend of mine and was probably made in the 1960's (does that qualify as vintage?). I'm still learning so much so please correct me. It was all done by hand. Here are a few pictures, including one of the back. Let me know what you think!

This is called a Cathedral Window. It is made using a large square of folded fabric. The edges are folded and stitched down around a smaller colored square. This is many times done by hand by can be done by machine. You are right, there is no batting in the quilt. The heaviness is due to all the folding. This type of quilt is a classic!

So none of the cathedral window quilts have batting? This seems like a very complicated pattern! I may have to try it one of these years since you say it can be done by machine. :)

It really isn't a complicated pattern, just time consuming. There is a pattern called the 10 minute block which is very similar and very easy. There is a tutorial here on the board, as well as some pics in the gallery.

My neighbor made these quilts by hand back in the early 70's . Every block was colored in hers and she charged 300.00 back then. She was a older lady and I was newly married...seemed like a fortune to me after growing up with utility quilts!
