Which do you like doing the best? The cutting, block making, quilting the finished project. Sometimes i find i am only in the mood to cut fabric. Other times it's the construction of the top.
What is you favorite part of making q quilt?

Minda 09-04-2010 02:57 PM

I enjoy the block making and sewing on the binding.

Rebecca VLQ 09-04-2010 03:01 PM

I kinda "get high" when I'm reaching the end of each stage. Like, I get all giddy when I have "almost everything" cut out. And, when I'm sewing the rows together. And when I'm serging around the edge to cut off the excess....etc, etc, etc...

Jim's Gem 09-04-2010 03:02 PM

I mostly enjoy the selecting of fabrics, cutting them out, piecing together the blocks and the quilt.
My least favorite are the final pressing, the sandwiching and the quilting (I never know the best way to quilt a quilt)

hobo2000 09-04-2010 03:05 PM

Designing the quilt and picking out the fabrics from my stash would have to be the highest point.

np3 09-04-2010 03:05 PM

I like every phase but I have times when I only want to cut, or maybe I only want to piece. So I usually have several projects going at one time so I can "feed my habit".

starlight 09-04-2010 03:08 PM

I like the design phase the best and then cutting.

sjhughson 09-04-2010 03:13 PM

EW EW I like it all, but not at the same time. I like what I'm doing at the moment. I tend to get bored easily and move on to another project. I have a mystery quilt I've worked on since July and I only have borders to put on. I miss calculated and the first border came up short. I'm trying to make a design adjustment. So I signed up for a sew along this long weekend and pulled fabrics for it (sort of a mystery also)this week. Was gone all day so I've got some of it started. Still haven't finished those borders. I like it all.

Kas 09-04-2010 03:29 PM

Fondling the fabric! And when the finished quilt comes out of the dryer. Those are my favorite parts.

Sadiemae 09-04-2010 03:43 PM

I love all of it except the binding. The quilting is probably my favorite. I also like to cut a lot. I really envy those of you that absolutely love binding. I wish I did, and probably would if I could sew by hand. I enjoyed embroidery immensely, but since my hand surgery my hands still go to sleep.

fabric_fancy 09-04-2010 03:46 PM

i like every aspect of quilting making from the original design process to seeing the finished product.

Kitsie 09-04-2010 03:59 PM

this post is a good example of why we (most of us) have more than one project going at a time!

eightylady 09-04-2010 04:39 PM

Definitely coordinating the colors/fabrics for the block/quilt.

quiltsRfun 09-04-2010 04:58 PM

I enjoy sewing the blocks but seem to stall when it comes to putting them together to complete the top. I really need a design wall. Also, I'm not that confident with my FMQ so right now I'm not enjoying it.

I love the feeling of sewing the very last stitch in the binding. It gives me a feeling of accomplishment and pride in finishing yet another project to give as a gift or to use in my own home.

SueDor 09-04-2010 05:00 PM

I like doing the binding because that quilt is done and I can get on to another project.

This describes my feelings!

fireworkslover 09-04-2010 06:49 PM

I really enjoy the piecing of the blocks. Sewing on the label is great too, since that's the last thing I do.

I think you're right. I like all the phases, but at times i am just in the mood to do one or the other. Finishing is by far the best feeling though!

Janet My 09-05-2010 05:39 PM

I enjoy every part of it. Picking the pattern I want to do, hunting for the fabric, cutting, piecing, backing & batting. ... But ironing that washed fabric before you start cutting is the pits! I just got 18 yds yesterday at Joanne's (for $50- super sale) and I washed and ironed it all today. Now my back is in knots. I usually don't iron all the fabric in one clip, but I want to start on this project tomorrow... so I had no choice.

littlehud 09-05-2010 06:04 PM

I love piecing the quilt top but my favorite is the quilting.

My favorite part? Picking the pattern, picking the fabrics and sitting down and piecing the top together. My least favorite part? Quilting it and binding it. Maybe thats why I have 13 quilt tops waiting to be quilted!!

HELLuvvANGEL 09-06-2010 04:28 AM

Im very new to quilting but not sewing. I hate cutting!!! Grrrr. I love the actual sewing part. I also really enjoy hand stiching. OHH i now hate sleeping!! Not that it takes me from quilting. Its the opposite!!! Im now dreaming of quilt paterns and fabrics. LOL I get more done in my sleep it seems(when i sleep).

EdieClay 09-06-2010 04:44 AM

I love sewing the blocks and then sewing them together so you begin to see the design ... I am still a fairly new quilter so I can't envision the final product in my mind yet. I don't like the cutting. I am still not an accurate cutter, but I know the importance of accuracy. I am relieved when I get the cutting down. I also still have a hard time picking out fabric ... it's that visualization thing again. I love quilting and am thrilled when I finish a quilt. To think ... I made that.

sidmona 09-06-2010 04:46 AM

I thoroughly enjoy the piecing of the top and the quilting of the finished top. I do not enjoy the cutting or the basting.

katsewnsew 09-06-2010 04:48 AM

I love it all!!! From the cutting to the piecing to the sandwiching to the free motion quilting to the binding! Oh, well maybe my least favorite is pinning and basting the quilt! My knees scream!

Yankee Quilter 09-06-2010 05:39 AM

I enjoy the cutting (believe it or not) and the piecing. I especially like hand sewing the binding too, it's so relaxing. The part I struggle with most is the design phase. When I'm trying to be original or do something really special for someone, I labor for weeks about the design (if I have that much time to work on it). Right now I am really stuck about a photo quilt for our dear friends' 50th anniversary. I have drafted 4 designs and am still stuck. I need to complete the piece in about 7 weeks and I hope I can make a design decision soon. So that's my favorite and my least favorite phases.

ledraj 09-06-2010 06:38 AM

I make quilts because I really enjoy the process. Every step from choosing fabric to quilting, I love them all. You will notice I didn't
add binding. Unless I have some one to give the quilt to I lay it
aside and work on something else. I now have 6 quilts that need
binding, 2 baby quilts and 4 queens. But makeing a quilt is so much
more fun than binding!

dixiechunk 09-06-2010 07:10 AM

Definitely choosing the fabric and making the blocks. My enthusiasm begins to ebb as it comes times to sew the rows together and add borders.

JoanneS 09-06-2010 09:02 AM

Designing is my favorite part. Picking out the fabric is 2nd. Sometimes the main fabric comes first, and I find a design that 'goes' with it. 3rd - sewing the design together, whether it be blocks or templates for an arty quilt. I love seeing my design come together. I even like putting on the binding - and I REALLY am greatful to Sharon Schamber for making that so much faster and easier!

My LEAST favorite part is cutting - probably because of my back issues. You don't have to start telling me about ergonomics: I have my cutting table at the right height; I have an Ott light; I ALWAYS put a new blade in my rotary cutter; I have a thick yoga mat under my feet; I wear good sneakers; I go to my chiropractor regularly. My neurologist agrees with him that I'm doing all the right things.

catrancher 09-06-2010 09:35 AM

I don't know if I can choose a favorite, but I'd rather not have to cut. I still do it because I just don't get the point of pre-cut fabrics. That's just me, and I know some of you make beautiful quilts with the jelly rolls and layer cakes and what not. So if I have to choose a favorite, I'd say everything except cutting.

Hey if you lived close I'd do your bindings. I have a friend that doesn't like the binding part, and every so often I get a Joann's gift card.

MarthaT 09-06-2010 11:09 AM

At each stage I wonder why I like doing this, but it's like an obsession to stay with it and get to the next step and see what that looks like. Binding is my least favorite, I think because I pretty much know what it looks like by then. I love to hand quilt and get lots of therapy time at that stage.

klgreene 09-06-2010 01:27 PM

I love it all, from spending hours on this board, looking for material on line in a million stores, designing, cutting isn't my favorite since I have carpel tunnel like I'm sure a lot of you do, but I like getting it cut out, piecing, and then trying to do something besides stich-in-the ditch, since that is all I can really do on my machine. Love the finished project. Love giving them as gifts. But periodicaly I have to stop cutting, piecing, and get the quilting done. I have 8 quilts at the moment to quilt (still hoping DH says ok, go buy a new machine).I have nothing cut out, but I do have patterns in my head and fabric just sitting on my table waiting for me.

kathome 09-06-2010 02:33 PM

My favorite is piecing the blocks on the quilt top.

quiltin chris 09-06-2010 02:46 PM

I really enjoy the piecing part. I just love sitting down to my sewing machine and sewing out the pattern.

Once I get the fabric picked out I wanna cut and sew, sew, sew.

candyce 09-06-2010 03:08 PM

I enjoy piecing the best and cutting out the least.

Mariposa 09-06-2010 03:25 PM

I enjoy seeing the blocks come together, and also knowing I am closer to putting the finishing touches on a project.

vwquilting 09-06-2010 03:50 PM

I'm still trying to get used to machine quilting as I have hand quilted for years. I find machine quilting sacrilegious because it takes so little time to make a quilt. Trying to get used to a new idea.
