I would like to subscribe to a quilting magazine.

I just found out there are six of them in the US.

If you were to subscribe to just one quilting magazine, which one would you choose?

and why?

thanks

cherrybsixty 01-09-2011 03:21 PM

I like 'QUILTER SAMPLER', it is issued quarterly and it introduce LQS all across the US.

Qbee 01-09-2011 03:27 PM

I have the same question!

nativetexan 01-09-2011 03:32 PM

fon's and porters is still good.
look at magazines in www.ericas.com and see some of what she has and peek inside.

carolaug 01-09-2011 03:36 PM

I have a ton of magazines...I like the ones that have quilts that I can actually make...I love the Better Homes and garden Quilting magazine, and The Quilter and McCall's quiting. Fons & Porter is ok...but more for advance quilters in my opinion but fun to look at. The Quilter Newsletter is ok...nothing I would get overly excited about...but if you like doing harder, art quilts there are a lot of ideas....I do love looking at all of them though.

glassnquilts 01-09-2011 03:55 PM

I like Quilting Arts. I don't subscribe because it is expensive but I should because I almost always end up buying one.

Scissor Queen 01-09-2011 03:56 PM

What you want out of a magazine and what somebody else wants out of a magazine are likely to be two different things. I want more current trends and info so I subscribe to Quilter's Newsletter and Fabric Trends. If I wanted more patterns I'd go with The Quilter. That magazine has 16 to 18 great patterns every month.

If they are all sealed in plastic at your stores, try your library and see if they have any that appeal to you. Most mags specialize in a "type" of quilt :D:D:D

CarrieAnne 01-09-2011 04:05 PM

I like them all! Saddly they are expensive, so I buy them used whenever I can!

Aren't you wise? I think I will take a look at my local library. Thanks.

I believe Quilt Sampler only comes out twice a year...Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. It is published by Better Homes & Gardens.

lfstamper 01-09-2011 04:18 PM

I go to half price books. a lot of people turn in their when finished reading and I don't mind if they are a little older copies. fons and porter is my favorite. have fun.

Mary M 01-09-2011 04:20 PM

I love "The Quilter" have made more quilts from it than any other magazine. I just oredered "Quilt" because they were offering 6 issues for $9.96! Best price for a quilt mag. that I have seen for a long time. Hoping it is a good one.

sak658 01-09-2011 04:46 PM

I have taken the same quilt magazine for years, and I haven't found one yet as good as the "Quilt" magazine. I love the down to earth patterns, and easy directions. It costs $10 a yr. Very worth it.

craftybear 01-09-2011 04:55 PM

thanks for letting us know

I recommend either American Patchwork & Quilting, McCalls Quilting, or Quiltmaker.

Mary M 01-09-2011 05:30 PM

So good to see your feedback. I will be looking forward to getting the first issue.

Quilter's Home. It has great articles more than patterns, but I don't really need patterns at this point.

These are my favorites also. I especially like the quilting diagrams in Quiltmaker.

Shari1967 01-09-2011 06:48 PM

Quilter's Home Magazine.
I like it because it has stuff to read about not just a ton of patterns. There are 3 patterns each issue but I really enjoy the articles about the quilters, designers, etc.... it's a "fun" magazine IMO.

quiltingshe 01-10-2011 12:02 AM

"Quilt" has been my favorite for years. I like scrappy, and they usually have at least one pattern in each issue. They are more traditional, not so artsy.

dorilou58 01-10-2011 02:50 AM

You are right on with Half Pticed Books...Their used quilt magazines are 50 cents where I go!

mmonohon 01-10-2011 02:56 AM

I bought "quick quilts" for my sis who is just learning. I myself like "quilt".

stitchinwitch 01-10-2011 03:47 AM

Did they always charge for shipping? I don't remember that. The issues that feature different patterns, and only PART of the pattern is featured, and you will have to buy 3 or 4 issues to get the entire patter - THAT is what I stay away from!.

Extreme Quilter 01-10-2011 04:38 AM

I used to go insane for magazines when I first began quilting seriously and at one time subscribed to as many as seven at one time. But I have let all of them go except for only two that are near and dear to my heart: "Quilting Arts" and "American Quilter."

thseabreze 01-10-2011 04:46 AM

I like McCalls, and Fons and Porter...McCalls, was the first one I ordered, and they have lots of nice patterns, and templates included. I get a couple others, but they are not as good as far as patterns.

Quilter's Home has become my fav. I have been buying it since the first issue. Below is the link to the site where I posted about the QH article on the Quilting Program that I supervise. While there, you can see what they've got in the mag. Not many patterns, but tons of quilty talk, inspiration & just plain fun!

I think the "Quilt" magazine is great and very affordable. I just subscribed to the magazine as it is only $9.96 for a year with I believe 6 issues. That is a good price.

Mkotch 01-10-2011 05:55 AM

I have made more quilts out of BHG's American Patchwork and Quilting than any of the magazines I subscribe to, but I enjoy Quilter's Newsletter for keeping me up on "the cutting edge." I have let my subscriptions to The Quilt Life expire because it was dull and Quilters Home expire because I hated the writing style.

Mamagus 01-10-2011 06:11 AM

I personally think the digital subscription to Quilter's World is the best deal around. 15.00USD and you can download back issues for two years and everything that comes out for the year ahead (as they become available). Then sit at the computer (and we all know us quilt boarders are good at that) and browse. You can print just the pattern you want. SAVE a tree! Or even better just keep your laptop open on your sewing table and follow the directions on the screen and SAVE another tree!!

catrancher 01-10-2011 07:41 AM

Quilters World: It's print or digital. I like the digital because all the magazines ever printed are available to me online. If I want to print a pattern, I just print it. I don't have to store all those magazines. But the biggest reason I like it is because it virtually ALWAYS has several patterns in it that I like. There are also web bonuses.

Toni-in-Texas 01-10-2011 08:07 AM

I only subscribe to one quilt magazine and it's 'Quiltmaker'. I like it because they have patterns for all levels and the instructions are very clear. Second and third choices if I could afford two or three more would be 'Quilt' and 'Fons and Porter'. If you go to quilt shows, some of them have recycled magazine for 25¢ each and it's a good way to get a collection started.

CircleSquare 01-10-2011 08:51 AM

My favorite is Quiltmaker because the quilts in it are very nice but not complicated and time-consuming to make. I call it quilter-friendly.

hgouveia 01-10-2011 09:01 AM

If you have a Barnes and Noble in your area, go in and look at all the magazines you want with no hassle. Then you can make a decision on what one is right for you.

GrammaO 01-10-2011 09:05 AM

I personally like Quick Quilts and Quilts and More primarily because I am a fairly new quilter and like projects that go together quickly and easily. Plus they always have basic tutorials in the issues so for me they give me the most bang for my buck. I love looking at the other mags anyway, but many of the projects are out of my ccomfort zone (for now) All of them are really terrific.

golo8 01-10-2011 09:05 AM

I love Quick Quilts... always a pattern there and four times a year Easy Quilts comes out... actually I can find something in every magazine a pick up.. what a dilemma that is.. LOL

Marysewfun 01-10-2011 09:10 AM

I am new to quilting and the first magazine I have tried so far is "Quick Quilts." They have 15+ projects in each issue that are explained in extreme detail and are do-able quicker projects not so intricate that you would "love to try then someday" when you get better at it.

Head to your newstand and browse, and check out magazines online. Choose one or 2 that appeal the most to you. I used to have 5 or 6 subsc. at times, but now I just have 3:
American Patchwork & Quilting (BHG), McCall's Quilting & QUILT magazine
McCall's Quick Quilts is a good one too, for easier patterns
I also love the Aussie mags, but lucky to have a friend who gives those to us :)

Poakie 01-10-2011 09:52 AM

I like Fons and Porter and Quick Quilts.
