Don't know if you've seen them, but in the SW (Arizona, New Mexico, S.California) real chili peppers are put into wreaths and used as Christmas decorations, or they can be year-round kitchen decorations in various shapes. Christmas light manufacturers make their lights in those shapes too.

One of those shapes is a ristra, similar to a grape cluster. They hang in the kitchen and the cook pulls them off and uses them as needed.

It needs to be one with a little curve in it so the "feather" looks right. Big Jim's curve when they grow.

The best compliment I have gotten on quilting was from someone on this board who said I had complimented my friend's quilt without taking over. It echoes in my head every time I look at a quilt I'm going to quilt. I too listen to the quilt and they speak to me. I have one laid out across the rollers right now and it's been talkin up a storm!

I can hear it from here. It's saying "feather me, feather me, feather me!"

Years ago I did some computer rescueing in Farmington NM and stayed with the office manager. We exchanged Christmas gifts -- we send live lobsters and she sent me a beautifyl hanging bunch of Chilles -- I still have them hanging from a beam at the cottage. It is a reminder if a pleasant time

According to my friend in Los Cruses, they spell it chille not chilli LOL

Yes, I used to live there but chille is the pepper and chilli is the dish. But as in Green chille with pork it's both. Go figure.

Actually the preferred US spelling is chili (only one 'l'). I believe two l's are used in the UK. Chile is the country but sometimes used to spell the food. The dictionary doesn't recognize chille at all. That doesn't mean, however, that they don't spell it that way somewhere...

sailsablazin 09-15-2011 06:57 AM

I want to know how I can get the live lobsters???

Selena 09-15-2011 06:59 AM

OK now I have to go eat something.

Correct - in the UK the food is 'chilli' with two ls, and red kidney beans, (sour cream and cheese optional). I have also heard of putting the dark chocolate in to enrichen the sauce but don't do that myself.

OK - off to perfect my jalapeno feathers.

mim 09-15-2011 07:12 AM

In NM they consider themselves the chille/chilli capitol of the world -- sort of the way Maine considers themselves the lobster capitol -- and then import from Canada for the lobster festival -- sorry -- I didn't mean to ruffle anyones feathers

No feathers ruffled here, it is just funny when you stop and think about it.

No ruffles here. Have you been there at this time of year when they are roasting the chiles? Mmm the aroma is everywhere and makes you so hungry. They have a festival in Hatch and theirs are supposed to be the best, something about the dirt there. I just know they are awesome and now I'm homesick!

Hey this whole topic is about feathers isn't it, so it's about time to ruffle some. But seriously, no one took offense at the spelling comment - we're just easily taken off track for some reason. I had already noticed that although chili is the correct spelling (per the dictionary anyway) most people were putting in 2 l's. As mim pointed out, proper spelling seems to be optional these days.

k3n 09-15-2011 07:30 AM

Now I have to go and quilt RUFFLED feathers! LOL

mim 09-15-2011 07:35 AM

All this talk made my DH inspired -- he is in the kitchen whipping up his specialty -- CHILI !! and the comment about hot sausage that I saw somewhere, earlier really turned him on

I agree. Perhaps those long armers should display a solid quilt. It would be beautiful.

sandpat 09-15-2011 03:48 PM

Well, I'm late coming to vote, but I prefer the Jalepenos...and I spell Chili with one L..- the country, the dish and the veggie..they are veggies, right?

Now...I want to see the quilted version of "ruffled feathers!"

Quiltinvaca 09-15-2011 04:00 PM

At a quilt show held by the Napa, CA guild, several LAQ's had samples on display. Quite a few of the samples were on solid fabric which really displayed their talents with free-hand work. Others were on typical quilt patterns in order to demonstrate what "could" be done. It was a wonderful way to see various types of quilting as well as the quality of the quilting.

when I backpacked in countries where the US was not welcomed, I put on my best Canadian accent and said aboot and oot like my neighbors to the north. Fortunately the Maine accent is very close to Nova Scotia.

I didn't sew a maple leaf on my pack the way many true Canadians did.

Botanically they are a fruit as they carry the seeds. Like bell peppers, eggplant, zuccini, squashes, tom-aaaaah-toes etc.

sandpat 09-16-2011 05:53 AM

A fruit huh??? Well, whoda thunk it???

mim 09-16-2011 06:35 AM

Out of curiousity, I looked up the word origin -- The country Chile comes from a mis-interpretation by the Spanish explorers of the local word for their country and the name of their leader. I didn't really find anything for the fruit/veggie name.
