As a longarm quilter, I use feathers occasionally. It took a few years of testing and trying to get just the look I wanted without too much quilting; the overquilting and double stitching and bump-back and double stems/filled stems is just not to my taste. I've found the technique I like now, and have used it on a couple of quilts with lots of open space. I chalk the spine but don't stitch it, and I leave a small space between the feathers.

My husband requested feathers for his own quilt that my girls and I made for him, and it suits the quilt perfectly. He loves it--enough said. I also used it in my tree skirt, because, frankly, I liked the look, and couldn't figure out how to quilt holly leaves and make it look as nice. http://www.quiltscapesquilting.com/patterns

Shivers go up and down my spine when a client asks me to do an overall pattern on applique' quilts, or motifs - I talk them out of it... The quilting is just there to add texture and bring the design of the quilt to life. If someone tells me to quilt it however I want to, I take clues from the design of the quilt, how it will be used, who it is for, and then I let the fabric and the quilt speak to me. (I hear quilts...)

So, at the risk of being shunned...

Well I for one won't shun you Deonn - those are fabulous, especially the Carpenter's Star. Thank you for showing how beautiful and fairly dense FMQ feathers can be used on a snuggly quilt. Beauty and usefulness in perfect harmony. :-D

Deonn, I would never shun you either. You quilting is well thought out and beautiful and you clearly show that quilts fully quilted are NOT stiff.....try experimenting people....the batting makes the difference!

I think it should be up to the person that does the piecing and perhaps a suggestion from the quilter about how it should be quilted. If they want feathers, let them have feathers. Everyone is not the same in what they like and don't like.

Your quilts are beautiful! :)

On many old quilts, the stitching was only used to hold the sandwich together and not follow the design.

Take the example of the Baptist Fan design or crosshatching.

In this quilt, I did with hand-quilted Baptist Fans which had nothing to do with the quilt pattern...it was merely a way to hold the sandwich together...but I liked the effect of letting the quilt pattern show through and the hand quilting fade into the background.

Gorgeous! I have a carpenters star going on my frame very soon. have to finish one for my future DIL first. I love your feathers and I do mine very similar, but will be trying different styles of feathers down the road. Beautiful job.

This is beautiful as well. I love hand quilting too. Sorry, this was meant for Loretta's hand quilted quilt.

grammysharon 09-13-2011 07:05 AM

I love the feathers but they are not for every quilt! Still they are my favorite quilting design but love everything that Charisima does!!!!!!

dixiebelle162002 09-13-2011 07:10 AM

I agree. I see many other quilting motifs that I would love to see more of.

Maggieloe 09-13-2011 07:18 AM

I find myself agreeing with everyone. Think I need another cup of coffee.

Love your Baptist fans - there is nothing utilitarian about THAT design!! And all hand-quilted. Wow.

I agree, there stunning, just not all over the quilt. I think they have there place in a quilt and I just love the design, but sometimes like you say, way to much.

Let's not argue -- I enjoy the Board simply because there are so many different types of quilters and just as many opinions. Be Nice please.

I agree...and for the record I only implied, I didn't use any actual swear words. LOL* ;)

Well, hot damn. Next time throw in a few cuss words and then I'll know "you're for real" (or whatever it is the kids say nowdays).

Who knew "feathers" could create such a crowd?!

ROTFL*** Well now that I know you're so passionate about cuss words I'll refrain from implying. ;)

sailsablazin 09-13-2011 01:40 PM

Feathers! No feathers! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and this board has such great individuals that I know that no one has intentionally stepped on toes.

I don't know about you, but there are a whole lot of other issues in my life to get excited about. If you have nothing more to get passionate about, excited about, or angry about...I can give you plenty---just ask.
On the scale of 1 to 10....the feather issue is about a negative 50 in my life! The question was just an opinion and FERSID was just asking. Some of us need to "Get a Life" and just "Chill." Life is way too short to get your panties in a wad over feathers. (Now don't anyone get offended over that comment)

I can just visualize the NY stock exchange floor loaded up with quilters yelling out "Feathers! No feathers! (like those stock brokers yell). It would be great to be a fly on the wall laughing at all of us. Maybe it's not such a great idea for all of us to get together someday---what a riot it would be!! literally!

Sadiemae 09-13-2011 01:43 PM

My panties are just fine, but thanks for asking.

I vote for the red beans and ground beef but would like the recipe for the beans and ham thingy.

You did all of those fans by hand??? Holy Cow---they are beautiful...obviously you used a stencil???

Thank you so much for asking. The vet called and she did super. She woke up quickly, and I leave in an hour to go and get her. I'm sure she is probably barking her head off by now, and they will glad to send her home. It is surprising how loud a 10 pound poodle can be. lol

sailsablazin 09-13-2011 01:59 PM

Who's having chili for dinner tonight???

I walked in late on this conversation. A final solution...to anyone who is unhappy with their feathers or no feathers, I would be happy to take that quilt off your hands....I'll even pay for shipping!! lol

Jammin' Jane 09-13-2011 02:48 PM

Ah, feathers....to be or not to be? I think this subject has been battered to death. It was an interesting post.

Now, I have to go make my chili for supper.
Ummmmmm...beans or no beans????

Happy quilting to all....and to all a good night!! :)

P.S. I love feathers!!! :) :) :) :)

Thank you. Yes, I did use a stencil.

I must say that I had wanted to do Baptist Fans for a long time but couldn't figure out what quilt to do them on.

This was probably the most boring quilting I have ever done! LOL

If I EVER do BF again, it will be on a SMALL project only as they just get too boring after a while. :)

QuiltE 09-13-2011 06:09 PM

Cheese?
NO ONE has mentioned cheese atop their chili.
NOT ONE SOUL!

geeeeesh!
I'll have mine with cheese ... .and you can make whatever mixture of beef, ground and beans. Just DON"T FORGET THE CHEESE!!!!!!!!!!
