As a longarm quilter, I use feathers occasionally. It took a few years of testing and trying to get just the look I wanted without too much quilting; the overquilting and double stitching and bump-back and double stems/filled stems is just not to my taste. I've found the technique I like now, and have used it on a couple of quilts with lots of open space. I chalk the spine but don't stitch it, and I leave a small space between the feathers.

My husband requested feathers for his own quilt that my girls and I made for him, and it suits the quilt perfectly. He loves it--enough said. I also used it in my tree skirt, because, frankly, I liked the look, and couldn't figure out how to quilt holly leaves and make it look as nice. http://www.quiltscapesquilting.com/patterns

Shivers go up and down my spine when a client asks me to do an overall pattern on applique' quilts, or motifs - I talk them out of it... The quilting is just there to add texture and bring the design of the quilt to life. If someone tells me to quilt it however I want to, I take clues from the design of the quilt, how it will be used, who it is for, and then I let the fabric and the quilt speak to me. (I hear quilts...)

So, at the risk of being shunned...

Well I for one won't shun you Deonn - those are fabulous, especially the Carpenter's Star. Thank you for showing how beautiful and fairly dense FMQ feathers can be used on a snuggly quilt. Beauty and usefulness in perfect harmony. :-D

I love feathers and yours are spectacular .... it really adds to the beauty!

Greeter Eva 09-13-2011 08:43 PM

I think everybody has thier own taste in how they like thier quilts , quilted. However I've seen some quilts that the LAQ took over the quilt, cuz the quilting was just gorgeous & the beautiful piecing just dissappeared in the shuffle.

geeeeesh!
I'll have mine with cheese ... .and you can make whatever mixture of beef, ground and beans. Just DON"T FORGET THE CHEESE!!!!!!!!!!

My DGD made chili for me once and brought some nice sharp cheddar to grate over top of it. Spectacular!

desertrose 09-13-2011 11:14 PM

I agree feathers seem to be a bit over used on a lot of quilts that LAQ's are doing and it does detract from certain quilts designs.

On the subject of over quilting on tops I like to see some unquilted areas roo. I understand that certain show quilts are supposed to be heavily quilted and I have seen some that are gorgeous but they do loose their cuddle factor when they are over quilted.

Well, that is because cheese is a given. You can't eat chilli without cheese or at the very least a grilled cheese sandwich!! lol

MadQuilter 09-14-2011 08:10 AM

Did not read all 20 pages, but if we are putting feathers on chilli (with or without cheese) they are overdone. lol

The reason I didn't mention cheese (or onions) is because that's a given. Beans may be optional, but some things you just don't mess with.

Wholeheart Mom 09-14-2011 09:51 AM

Okay, can I just say that I make the world's most awesome vegetarian chili?

My secret ingredients are packages of ranch dressing mix and taco seasoning! It sounds awful, but everyone (including meat eaters) loves it.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming......

Another secret ingredient ... baker's cocoa!

Well holy mole! Do you add peanut butter too?

Selena 09-14-2011 01:04 PM

OK, I've been holding out for two days and I can't stand it any longer. I haven't met a feather that I didn't like. I think appropriately placed, they enhance a quilt. Now as for chilli, I can make a mean batch preferably without beans, I know because people used to buy it. As for myself, I like mine green, made with pork, with cheddar cheese on top and served with warm tortillas. Just spicy enough to make your nose run. I feel better now and yes, I just have to be different. LOL

Well, at least you didn't put cocoa ???? in it!! I have never heard that one before. lol

Selena 09-14-2011 01:09 PM

Cocoa is in mole so it probably is good in chilli too.

It's a sauce that was created by some Mexican nuns. Somebody important in the church was coming for a visit and their cupboards were almost bare. They fixed chicken and used what they had including chocolate to make a sauce and it was a hit.

Online it says that it is a sauce with an intoxicating blend of chocolate, chiles, garlic, onions and nuts and so much more.

Selena 09-14-2011 01:26 PM

Yup, I forgot about the nuts.

QuiltE 09-14-2011 01:59 PM

Here you are ... the official (well not really, but it was a good score on Google) history of Chili ala Cocoa.

Outside of the state of Texas, Cincinnati, Ohio, is the most chili-crazed city in the United States. ...........
http://whatscookingamerica.net/Beef/CincinnatiChili.htm

Anyone from Cincinnati here? ..... and they can speak to their local official food!

I first had it while visiting friends a few years ago. When my friend was making it, I thought, OMG are they ever weird!!! Then we ate it .... a lovely dark chili, and with just a hint of the cocoa in it.

The fun part was that you could "build your own" and everyone could have their chili, just the way they liked it! :)

So nay sayers ... never say never ... until you at least have tried it!

And don't forget the Canadian cheddar cheeeeeeeeeeese!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sadiemae 09-14-2011 02:03 PM

Didn't like chocolate in gravy and I am not eating it any kind of a sauce...

I am not really that picky. I was raised on a farm and we raised our own livestock when we were little, so I probably ate things that others would say--Ick!!! I just know what I like. lol

I'm now thinking of quilting feathers with chilli pepper shapes - now THAT would be cool! Or hot.

pippa45 09-15-2011 03:16 AM

I agree 100%, some of it is over the top, but that is just my opinion.
My preference is less is best.
Just my two bobs worth.

Of course, we will be expecting to see some pics of that posted so we can decide if its "over done" or not.

Don't know if you've seen them, but in the SW (Arizona, New Mexico, S.California) real chili peppers are put into wreaths and used as Christmas decorations, or they can be year-round kitchen decorations in various shapes. Christmas light manufacturers make their lights in those shapes too.

Yeah yeah - once I decide between Scotch Bonnet or Jalapenos I'll get on it!

I've seen dried chilli dangly decorations around too. Fun to see just HOW far off topic we can get this thread - of course it's YOUR fault dunster for starting the chilli discussion.
