That's a featherweight, but not a 222, which has a free-arm and feed dog drop. They sell for a lot more.

I know nothing about machines!

Wanabee Quiltin 07-31-2011 10:27 AM

Sure looks like one to me. Is the case as small as it looks ? My case is only about 13 inches wide and 8 inches deep. I just measured it to be sure.

Lindsey 07-31-2011 10:29 AM

sure looks like one to me too. Did you win the bid? I see it was over on the 30th ?

Leota 07-31-2011 10:30 AM

That is a Featherweight 221.
Look at the model number and then go to this site http://www.singer-featherweight.com/...es/dating.html to determine when your FW was made..

sweetpea 07-31-2011 10:30 AM

what is it weight? featherweight only about 11 lbs.

Ghetohound 07-31-2011 12:34 PM

My hubby just got it for me on ebay. I haven't a clue what it is (laughing) I't looked like a featherweight to me, but I just started sewing so I have no clue.

I know the 222 has been going for around 250+ and even in the 300's depending on condition (I believe) The guy didnt list a serial number so I haven't a clue what it is. I will find out soon enough!

The case is wood. In the pic, I cant tell either way.

Thanks for all the info Ladies! I knew I could count on you!

sewbizgirl 07-31-2011 02:25 PM

I haven't seen the all wood case like that one has. I'd love to know what year it was made. Looks just like my FW, except for the case.

OneMoreQuilt 07-31-2011 02:28 PM

She's beautiful!!!

jljack 07-31-2011 02:38 PM

Yep, it's a Featherweight Singer 221.

peacebypiece 07-31-2011 02:46 PM

Original featherweight cases are made of wood, like in the picture, then covered with a leather-look paper.

k9dancer 07-31-2011 02:47 PM

It is indeed a fEATHERWEIGHT 221. tHE 222S GO FOr a lot more.

Lindsey 08-01-2011 03:23 AM

I can see it has an arm that flips up. Just not so visible in this photo.

psychonurse 08-01-2011 04:33 AM

Congratulations. Buy the book by Nancy JOhnson Sebro
Featherweight 221 It will be invaluable to you.

katlady3 08-01-2011 05:03 AM

Yes it is, lucky you!

Val in IN 08-01-2011 05:11 AM

Yep, that's a 221. You're gonna love her!! Congrats on the machine and for having a very nice hubby :-)

KyKaren1949 08-01-2011 05:30 AM

It looks like a 221 to me too, but I can't really see the front part of the machine. If it folds up, then it is a 221.
I believe the case is one that someone has removed all the black leather or vinyl from it. You can sand those down, stain and revarnish with polurethane and it will be gorgeous.
The FW 222 free arm machines are usually around $1000 and up. The 221 machines you can find for around $200-$300 now. You will love using this! They're great for workshops and retreats!

redpurselady 08-01-2011 05:42 AM

It sure is a FW - and you got a great deal on it too!

Lavada 08-01-2011 05:50 AM

do not have any idea but she is beautiful are you going to name her

Annaquilts 08-01-2011 05:54 AM

Yes and congrats. She is beautiful!

Donna Hall 08-01-2011 05:54 AM

I saw a case like that. It had one time had been covered with the black like most cases. The owner told me that the black cover was so bad, that she was going to take it off and put something else on it. But she was surprised when she took off the paper and found the wood. So she cleaned it and has left it.

janiesews 08-01-2011 06:33 AM

Yes you have a wonderful little featherweight! I have read about the cases having the black "wrapping" removed and refinished and I would say that is what has happened with this one. Another educational resource to consider buying is the DVD from David McCallum. Or go to your local library and see if they have either books by the great authors. I have both and use both - lots of historical and useful information in both. Enjoy your baby and use her! :-D

InfoLady 08-01-2011 07:05 AM

Yes. I have one made in 1935 - appropriately,my birth year. The black fabric covering the case was torn, showing wood underneath, so I ripped it off and refinished it - inside and out. Looks very nice, and many folks in workshops have said they're going to do the same after seeing mine. Mine was found at a yard sale where I was told "$25, firm!" So I told her it was a fair price, paid cash and ran!!

megs0863 08-01-2011 07:14 AM

Did not know those cases had nice wood underneath the black covering. Knowing that, it would be easy to overlook the condition of the case if the machine itself looks real good.

caspharm 08-01-2011 08:02 AM

According to the auction, this is 221 in very good condition. The case is very nice and you paid a nice price.

It is not a 222. I don't see the little knob on the base that releases the table and makes it into a freearm next to the bottom tension for the bobbin winder. Also, 222's go for about 750 and up, especially if they are wired for the US.

Its a 221.
Love the wood case.

roserips 08-01-2011 10:54 AM

The wood case is what is under the black fabric. The case was most likely damaged and they removed the fabric then oiled the box to make it look nice.

Tinabug 08-01-2011 12:20 PM

It's a FW, I just got a new one Saturday! April, 1948.

mycatsmom 08-01-2011 12:57 PM

Yes this is a featherweight. You can write down the serial code and look up when it was made online.

dragonflyxlx 08-01-2011 01:08 PM

wow you got that for a super price and it is a featherweight, what a cutie!!! The case is the original case, it has just been stripped of the black fabric covering. You could do a lot with that beautiful wood if you want to.

Congratulations!

brushandthimble 08-01-2011 01:23 PM

very nice love the dovetail edges.

writerwomen 08-01-2011 01:29 PM

If the seller listed it as a 222 then there is an issue of misrepresentation- it may have been accidental but also may have been intentional knowing 222 has agreater value due to rarity- communicate with the seller the fact you are aware it is not a 222 and Ebay also likes to know as misrepresentation is considered serious.

mshawii 08-01-2011 01:30 PM

Yours is definitely a 221. If you put the machine so you can see the underside, you will see the numbers of your machine. Then go on line and check to see what the date is. It goes by the first letters. In otherwards mine is AL. As for the case everyone is right, the outer fabric has been taken off and refurnished. Looks good. When I went to Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show and Quilters Affair a few years ago, I saw a case that someone had done decorative sewing things all around the base of the case. It ws just darling and everyone wanted to know if she did it and if not who did so they could get theirs done. It has scissors, tomato pin cushion, rulers, irons(old antique ones)rotary cutters, etc. Just as cute as can be!!! Jan
